Helping International Students

Come rub shoulders with international students in Manhattan THIS Saturday, Feb. 28th, 6-8pm at the Houston Street Ballroom (427 Houston St.). Bring a dish or 2 to share. If you’d like to help beyond that at this event, which would be great, contact the HIS office at [email protected].

The Elders and Pastor Search Team invite you to a church-wide update lunch to share the latest about our search process. It will be right after the Central Gathering at FHCS on Sunday, March 8, from 11:45am-1pm at latest. Pizza and drinks will be provided!

SERIES BIG IDEA: Let’s reclaim Gospel-powered spiritual disciplines for the sake of godliness (i.e. good works to the glory of God and for the good of His people).

•TODAY: PRAYER

``

“What's prayer? It's shooting shafts [arrows] into the dark. What mark they strike, if any, who's to say? It's reaching for a hand you cannot touch. The silence is so fathomless that prayers like plummets [stones] vanish into the sea. You beg. You whimper. You load God down with empty praise. You tell him sins that he already knows full well. You seek to change his changeless will ... And sometimes, by God's grace, a prayer is heard.”

― Frederick Buechner, “Godric”

13 And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” 16 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

MARK 10:13-16 (ESV)

• Matthew 18:3 – Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

• Luke 10:21 – In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

• Matthew 6:9 – Pray like this: Our Father in heaven…• Romans 8:15 – The Spirit you received does not make you

slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

• Mark 14:36 – “Abba, Father," he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

OTHER PASSAGES ON THIS THEME

• With the Scriptures, we need to grow up. But with prayer, we need to become young again.

• Prayer always comes from the lap of the Father.

• The fight to stay in the lap of the Father is called discipline.

THIS IS WHERE PRAYER IS

DISCIPLINING OURSELVES TO PRAY“And when you pray, do not keep on

babbling like pagans, for they think they

will be heard because of their many

words. Do not be like them, for your

Father knows what you need before you

ask him.”

DISCIPLINING OURSELVES TO PRAY

“Private, personal prayer is one of the

last great bastions of legalism. In order to

pray like a child, you might need to

unlearn the nonpersonal, nonreal praying

that you’ve been taught.”

TAKE AWAYS

Christ Followers: Tell God how much you want to learn to pray from his lap. Ask him to help you pray.

Seekers: Why not cry out to God now?

Other Ideas for Prayer:• Pray that God would give you a desire to pray.  That He'd not

only help you pray more, but WANT to, and enjoy it! • Let your mind wander to someone who you really struggle to

get along with.  Pray for that person now.  That God would draw them closer to Jesus.  Pray also for your own heart, that God would help you see them through His eyes.

• Pray that God would show you a next step He's wanting you to take in your spiritual walk with Him.  Pray that you'd have the courage to take it.

• Pray for our church during this transition season. Pray that God would lead us as we consider filling the lead pastor position. Pray that New Hope’s best days of Kingdom effectiveness in Manhattan (and beyond) would be to come.
