Welcome to Autodesk University 2009.

As we all know, this has been a very tough year for the global economy and for many of Autodesk’s customers. Companies are being forced to do more with less, and

employees are looking for ways to learn more and get even better at their jobs.

This challenging environment makes Autodesk University even more valuable than usual because of the opportunities it provides to improve your knowledge, build your skills, and expand your network.

Page 2: Welcome to Autodesk University 2009

Some of the highlights of the AU 2009 experience include:

Hands-on training with the latest Autodesk tools and techniques•

The chance to learn from some of the world’s top instructors, Autodesk •insiders, and industry experts

The opportunity to share ideas and insights with a community of your peers•

The energizing experience of participating in a live event in a world-class venue•

The professional experience and expertise you bring back home with you, •which can benefit your company and your career

And the AU experience doesn’t end when the conference does, because you can access AU Online for learning and networking 24/7/365.

On a personal note, Autodesk University is one of my favorite events of the year: it’s the perfect opportunity for me to talk with customers from all over the world about their projects, their use of Autodesk tools, and the issues they’re facing in their day-to-day work.

In these challenging times, more than ever, we look forward to seeing you at Autodesk University 2009.

Badges

AU 2009 conference badges must be worn at all times to gain entry and maintain access to the conference and exhibition venues.

Medical Assistance

If you need medical assistance, please ask any AU staff person to contact the on-site emergency medical technician (EMT).

Wireless Access

Wireless Internet access is available outside the conference classrooms. Look for signs that say “Wireless Network (WiFi) Available Here.” The conference SSID, which is case-sensitive, is AU2009.

As with most public wireless hot spots, wireless connection is not secure. Autodesk recommends that you take appropriate precautions when using this service, including running a personal firewall and the latest antivirus software.

AU 2009 surveys Available Online

After each class, complete a session survey online at a Survey Kiosk. The kiosks are conveniently located in the foyers outside the classrooms. Each completed survey enters you in that day’s drawing for a free AU 2010 all-inclusive conference pass. Several winners are announced each day.

Starting Thursday, December 3, at 8:00 a.m., AU 2009 conference surveys will also be available at the Survey Kiosks. Your input is important and will be used to make the next Autodesk University better than ever.

Welcome Address/General session KeynoteTuesday, December 1 10:00 a.m.–11:30 a.m. North Convention Center, Concourse Level, Events Center (Arena)

Autodesk CEO Carl Bass will share the five design-related capabilities that he believes are key to solving today’s most challenging design problems. He will demonstrate how customers are using these capabili-ties to do things that were impossible just a short time ago.

In addition, guest speaker Amory Lovins, co-founder and chief scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute, will talk about a concept called whole system design and how it leads to better design.

Next, Autodesk CTO Jeff Kowalski will show how the five-design capabilities work together to achieve whole system design. He will also demonstrate the software tools that provide you with these capabilities so you can apply them to your projects.

Inspired by the global success of Cut&Paste’s annual Digital Design Tournament—which brings designers from around the world to compete on stage—the Cut&Paste Design Slam returns to Autodesk University for the second year. This electrifying live event will showcase design professionals as they create original 3D work in rounds of 20 minutes.

The fast-paced format tests skill, speed, and stage presence while the audience witnesses the design-ers at work on large-scale projected screens. Each designer will compete with their favorite weapon among a variety of Autodesk 2010 software tools. With two rounds each night, the Cut&Paste Design Slam promises to be a heart-pounding contest of slick computer tricks, quick-witted design, and high-energy showmanship.

Autodesk University is about inspiration, new skills, fresh insights, professional connections—and a bit of fun too. From early morning to late evening, opportunities to experience all of these at AU are abundant. Put together your own personalized program from these special AU 2009 events and highlights.

Tuesday, December 1 5:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. South Convention Center, Level 2, Mandalay Bay E

For our AU keynote this year, the AutoCAD and Media & Entertainment teams are joining forces to bring you a completely new experience!

This event will provide a unique opportunity to get an insider’s glimpse of future technology, listen to industry visionaries, network, share knowledge, and honor the passion of 3D designers and visualizers.

Marriott International Senior Vice President for Architecture and Construction, Karim Khalifa, will describe how a global hospitality and hotel company streamlined their design and construction process. We also have a Hollywood producer from the film industry joining us to discuss the role Autodesk technology plays in building believable characters and engaging stories.

Autodesk Senior Vice Presidents Amar Hanspal and Marc Petit will offer a sneak-peek technology preview and discuss the future of your favorite Autodesk tools such as AutoCAD® software, Autodesk® 3ds Max® Design software, and Autodesk® Showcase® software.

And when we are done, have a drink on us and mingle with the guest speakers, executives, and product teams who will be there to answer your questions during the mixer.

Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Keynote

Wednesday, December 2 10:00 a.m.–11:30 a.m. South Convention Center, Level 2, Mandalay Bay E

What if… What a great theme for AU this year! The architecture, engineering, and construction industry is faced with numerous what-if questions: What if 3D design tools were available to everyone? What if you could accelerate permitting of new utility projects? What if you could plan, design, and construct major transportation projects before any dirt is moved? What if all new and existing buildings had to be carbon efficient? What if sustainable design becomes a global mandate? What if you could improve the life of a building? What if building information modeling (BIM) was mandated on every project you do?

The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Keynote will address two or three of the most com-pelling what-if questions facing this industry today. These questions will be addressed using customer experiences, industry experts, and product demon-strations to share best practices for the challenges facing you and your business. Join us on Wednesday morning for a keynote session that promises to be both educational and entertaining.

Manufacturing Keynote

Wednesday, December 2 1:00 p.m.–2:30 p.m. South Convention Center, Level 2, Mandalay Bay E

This event provides an opportunity to learn about the latest technology, find out what is new from Autodesk, and take a peek into the future. Join us for 90 minutes of inspiration, motivation, and entertainment, featuring a presentation from Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, founder and chairman, X Prize Foundation; digital prototyping in action; and the first annual Manufacturing Achievement Awards.

Diamandis is a pioneer and leader in the commercial space arena, having created many of the leading space-related organizations that are developing the personal spaceflight industry. The X Prize Foundation awarded the US$10 million Ansari X Prize for private spaceflight, and it is now implementing prizes in a variety of arenas.

Government Keynote: Innovative Technology Is Critical to the successful Modernization of Infrastructure

Wednesday, December 2 1:00 p.m.–2:30 p.m. South Convention Center, Level 3, South Seas C

Learn how government entities can fulfill their vision for modernizing infrastructure by utilizing modeling-based technology to rebuild the nation’s infrastruc-ture better, faster, and more affordably than ever before. Stimulus funding has expedited many federal, state, and local government projects, opening up op-portunities for government and commercial entities to reap the benefits of model-based technology in designing new or retrofitting existing government buildings, roads, and utilities.

intel Partner Level The Changing Face of the Digital Workstation

“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.” Albert Einstein

Today’s workstation can provide you with a magnificent digital canvas to create tomorrow today.

With a workstation powered by two Intel® Xeon® 5500 series processors, an engineer can design, visualize, and simulate products from the conceptual design phase through the entire manufactur-ing process. This is done virtually before any investments are made in a prototype.

“Any color—so long as it’s black.” Henry Ford

Like the automobile, the workstation has morphed into something much more than what it once was. It now has more capabilities and features than its predecessor, and if you allow it to, it can help you accelerate the pace of your innovation.

Today’s workstation gives engineers a new tool that can be likened to a digital workbench. This tool is powered by two Intel Xeon 5500 series processors and can host a suite of software applica-tions that engineers employ to create and test their ideas. The pliers, hammer, and nails found on a workbench in a garage or basement have now been replaced with digital tools that promise to accelerate innovations via a process known as digital prototyping. Its enablers include application tools such as detailed CAD, CAE, and PIM. Together they represent the new digital workbench—a powerful innovation tool you can use to bring your ideas forward faster than ever before.

Don’t think of a workstation as a CAD terminal anymore. As Autodesk digital prototyping allows users to design and manufacture at the speed of thought. The digital workbench may now help you do it even faster.

“Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them.” Albert Einstein

You think all you need is an entry-level workstation with a single Intel® Xeon® processor. After all, you only do CAD—right?

However, as you begin to adopt modern workflows and realize the dramatic impact that simulation-based engineering or digital prototyping can have on your product development cost and sched-ules, you realize that the cost of the second processor and additional memory necessary to support digital prototyping was far less expensive than the cost of multiple physical prototypes and the associated time to produce them. Instead of investigating hundreds of digital prototypes, you only have time to look at a single physical prototype and ask: What if I …?

Those “what ifs” could have been played out on a dual-processor Intel Xeon processor 5500 series-based digital workbench faster, and your time and cost of physical prototypes could have been significantly reduced.

Join the revolution and innovate faster with the digital workbench.
