From the high Cairngorms down to a superb coastline, this north-east corner of Scotland has castles and distilleries aplenty, as well as a heritage bound up with farming and fishing.

Aberdeen, the Granite CityScotland’s third-largest city, the silver granite of Aberdeen gives a distinctive ambience. Its sea-going heritage can be explored at the city’s Maritime Museum, while the Art Gallery in Schoolhill is also a popular attraction. Aberdeen’s beach and extensive promenade offers a range of leisure attractions, including Scotland’s largest permanent funfair.

Moray Firth - Beaches and DolphinsThis north-facing coastline is one of the most unspoilt and dramatic stretches of coastline anywhere in Scotland. It offers rugged cliff sections, such as Troup Head near Banff, with its gannet colony, and bays and coves where communities like Gardenstown (Gamrie) and Pennan sit close to the shore. There are magnificent beaches, for

example at Lossiemouth and Burghead, and anywhere along the Moray Coastal Trail there is the chance of seeing the local bottlenose dolphins.

Castle TrailGrampian has a fine selection of castles which have survived intact, including such gems as Craigievar, near Alford, standing much as the 17th-century masons left it, and Crathes, another fine towerhouse with a magnificent garden. Admire the stunning collection of paintings and furniture at the magnificent Duff House or relive Scotland’s military past at Corgaff Castle.

are very much part of the landscape. A host of distilleries have good visitor facilities, including tours and tastings.

Royal DeesideQueen Victoria and Albert gave the Deeside area a cachet which survives to this day. Balmoral Castle’s ballroom and grounds are open to view when royal parties are not in residence.

There are plenty of other places of interest for visitors seeking the special wild atmosphere of Deeside. Mar Lodge offers a fine choice of walks and trails. The end of the public road near the Linn of Dee is the start for all kinds of excursions in the Eastern Cairngorms.

Salmon, Golf and CashmereKinnaird Head in Fraserburgh is the setting for the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses. Johnstons of Elgin is a major cashmere producer (with mill and shop). Alford has the Grampian Transport Museum, while Pitmedden near Ellon has a unique heraldic garden.

There are over 50 golf courses in the Aberdeenshire area, including many classic coastal links, some at world-class standard.

Angling is popular, with a good choice of stocked fisheries. The Dee, Don and Spey are the best-known rivers, other waters such as the Ythan, Ugie, Deveron and Lossie all offer sport. The sandy beaches at places like Aberdeen, Newburgh, Fraserburgh, Banff and points west all attract surfers throughout the year.

Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion, and more, this year shines the spotlight on Scotland’s greatest assets, icons, and hidden gems. Discover the richness of the country’s beautiful built heritage, culture and environment, alongside contemporary and cutting edge designs of today.

My name is Graham Coull and I am the manager

here at Glen Moray Distillery. I am only the fifth

manager in the distillery’s history and look forward

to welcoming you.

Glen Moray has been distilled on the banks of

the River Lossie since 1897 by a small, dedicated

team of craftsmen. In over a century of distilling

at Glen Moray, much has changed. However,

the ingredients, processes and the skills of those

responsible for producing this finest quality single

malt whisky have remained constant.

Glen Moray is a very high quality single

Speyside malt with a smooth warming

taste - I’m sure you will soon find your

own favorite from the range.

Enjoy your visit!

The softest cashmere from China and Mongolia, and fi ne lambswool, is spun, dyed and woven at the original mill on the banks of the River Lossie in Elgin, where Johnstons of Elgin has manufactured for over 200 years. The only remaining British mill to convert natural, raw material into the fi nished product, Johnstons of Elgin utilises the traditional skills of craftsmen and women, alongside innovative technology and contemporary design. One of the world’s foremost producers of cashmere woven and knitted garments, Johnstons of Elgin is continuing its company tradition of creating luxury British products, of the fi nest quality, for an international market.

Tracing your family roots in theNorth East of Scotland?www.northeastscotlandroots.com

Elspet’s roots in the North East Scotland...

...What’s your connection?

“Sailed today on Allan Liner “Numidian”. This is the way that a chapter in many a Scots life would have ended and a new one abroad would

have begun – travelling on a ship to a new country. Places like America, Australia and New Zealand offered many Scots an escape from poverty, and a fresh start. We know from the original Register of the Poor for Peterhead (which is kept at Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives) that Elspet Jane Niddrie was only 4 when she sailed for America in 1912. She left behind her dying mother and an adult half-sister who were unable to care for her.

It is apparent from the original record that as her mother’s illness had progressed, a more lasting decision needed to be made to secure Elspet’s future. The solution was for the child to be sent to her Aunt, Jane Lemmon (née Niddrie) who had emigrated to the USA in 1904. First, however, the Parish Council had to get her agreement. It was probably at this time that Elspet’s photograph was taken so that a copy could be sent to her Aunt in America. Another copy was stuck into the Register of the Poor.Whether it was the photograph, Elspet’s circumstance, or simply the fact that she was family, her Aunt agreed to the Parish Council’s request. And so the last chapter in Elspet’s life in Scotland ended with the Inspector of the Poor writing in her record;

“20 November 1912 Passage paid to Boston USA and sent to Aunt... sailed today on Allan Liner ‘Numidan’.”

Elspet’s mother, Sarah Niddrie, passed away in 1914. Elspet herself appears in the USA Federal census of 1920 living with her Aunt’s family in Massachusetts. We know that Elspet had a long and happy life as one of her granddaughters, who lives in the USA, got in touch with us when she stumbled across this story on www.northeastscotlandroots.com Elspet was always proud of her roots in North East Scotland…
