The Methodist Chapel

The Chapel was built in 1821 on the site of an old orchard, the land costing £12 and the building £178.14s.0d. Originally the chapel could seat 300 people in comfort, who would have paid rent for the privilege. There used to be a gallery, which was partially removed during the refurbishment of 1994, when the building was transformed from quite a gloomy place to the bright, warm, comfortable place of worship it is today. We are a small, but very friendly congregation, who would make you most welcome if you decided to join us. We meet each Sunday at 10.30 am and usually stay for coffee after the Service.

N.B. Other activities that take place in the Chapel are detailed in the following pages.

COFFEE MORNINGCoffee Mornings are held in the Methodist Chapel on Tuesday mornings from 8.30 am to 11.30 am where fresh ground coffee and a variety of teas are served.

Fair Trade tea and coffee are also available. In addition, scones and biscuits are provided. Everyone who chooses to come is given a very warm welcome.

The facility is provided primarily for people to meet in a friendly environment. Voluntary donations by our clients are split two ways with 25% being retained to defray costs and 75% going to a range of charities. The supporters have raised many thousands of pounds for charities since 1996.

Why don't you be part of the best Coffee Morning in the North of England?

APPLETON WISKE SCHOOL

The school’s formal catchment area covers the villages of Appleton Wiske, East and West Rounton and Picton. There are, however, many children from other local villages who attend the

school. Transport for children living over two miles away is provided by coach and minibus. The school is situated on the southern outskirts of Appleton Wiske with an outlook over open fields. The building, opened in 1983, has three classrooms, a hall and a new extension, built in 2005, housing the library and ICT suite. In the three classes there are always at least two age groups. Class 1 comprises Reception and year 1 children, Class 2 comprises year 2 and year 3 children and class 3 comprises years 4, 5 and 6 children. There are two playgrounds, a playing field and landscaped gardens. There is also a pond and ‘wildlife’ area, designed by the children and built by parents.

APPLETON PLAYERS

The Appleton Players produce a pantomime each year in the Village Hall and this combines the talent, skills and expertise of the people in Appleton Wiske and their neighbours. Over the last 25 years the village production has got better and better, all thanks to the efforts of the committee and the many children and adults who take part in some way. Our pantomimes have a local flavour and we pride ourselves on being able to achieve the highest quality in acting, music and song, scenery, costumes, and props. If you would like to take part on stage, backstage, or helping out during the performances or with the rehearsals, then please note the following information. Remember, whatever you can offer, you will be made most welcome.

Children and Adult Auditions usually held in the first week of September in the Village Hall. Rehearsals are held in the Village Hall each Thursday evening from September to January at 6.30. & 7.30 pm. Additional rehearsals are held on a Sunday afternoon at 2 pm nearer the performances which are usually held in the 2nd week of January each year. Chairwoman: Michelle Street Treasurer: Peter Harding

WALKERS OF APPLETON

The 'Walkers' of Appleton are very much a social walking group rather than a rambling group. Throughout the year we meet once a month, either a Saturday or Sunday, and take turns to choose and lead a walk.

We either have a picnic lunch or a pub lunch -either way we always finish in the pub. These walks are approximately 7 miles long.

During the summer we try once a month, to also have an evening walk of approximately 3-4 miles usually ending with a meal in the pub. Although we have approximately 26 members, we usually have a group of up to 12 on each walk as most people are busy and can't make or don't want to make them all.

Walking is a wonderful way ·of meeting people in the village and making new friends. A few days

Page 11: Welcome to AppletonWiske.com – Activities, Events, News ... · Web viewA Christian Fellowship and Bible Study Group meets in the Rectory during Term time, alternate Mondays at 2.00

before any walk, there is a notice on the notice board outside the Post Office however if anybody is interested, please phone me,
