ArtStudents will explore a variety of media in 7th grade art. Students will be learning to apply their creativity, past knowledge, and newly acquired skills to solve

problems in innovative ways. They will be challenged to answer questions that don’t always

have a “right” answer. And, of course, they will have fun!

ArtArt teachers are always looking for materials to use in projects and assignments. We especially love it when we can use something that is repurposed- stuff that other people might consider to be junk. If you have any of the following items, please consider donating them to the art department rather than throwing them out:

Magazines Newspaper

Clean plastic containers with lids Old crayons

Random craft supplies (like glitter, ribbon, stickers, etc...) Buttons

House paint Plastic egg cartons

Plastic grocery store bags Clean old t-shirts

Nail polish, polish remover Metal kitchen utensils (silverware, spatulas, etc)

If you have any other items that you think we may find useful, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Thanks!

Academic Literacy

Inquiries: What is Literacy? What is Text?

● Purpose: to read more deeply, we will question our purposes for reading and learn strategies that enable to us to read critically in order to gain a deeper, more thorough understanding of texts.

● Text is not limited to print. Thus, in addition to to various genres, we will read images, signs, advertisements, music, and so on.

● Together, we will make our thinking visible through a variety of strategies and literacy activities. Our expectation is that students will come with their brains, bodies and binders and join us as we create a warm community of reading, inquiry, and thought.

Page 31: Welcome to 7th Grade - State College Area School District€¦ · From 6th grade to 7th grade change classes frequently many personal changes increased student responsibility separate

● Reading to Learn (vs. Learning to Read)

● Four areas of focus:○ reading is personal and social○ metacognition/reading actively○ different strategies for academics vs. pleasure reading○ media literacy is increasingly important
