Honours
Good evening, and thank you for joining
us at Bosham Football Club’s end of
season presentation, here at Bosham
Village Hall.
Tonight is all about bringing together and
celebrating the success the club has had in
the 2013/14 season – both on-and-off the
pitch.
Individual awards for first and reserve
teams will be made, including top goal
scorer, managers player, and players
player for each side, resided over by MC,
Frank Antony – thank you, Frank!
These awards will be followed by the big
one – the West Sussex Football League
Premier Division trophy and player
medals, presented Dave Waller, Chairman
of the West Sussex Football League
referees and competition committee, we
thank him for attending this evening to
make the presentation.
Ben Evans will be providing the tunes,
kicking off the disco after the awards have
been made!
The club has covered a lot of ground this
season, so lets take a moment to reflect
on the best bits…
Andy Probee took over a Bosham side
sitting in mid-table in the Premier Division,
having just been beaten 5-0 at West
Chiltington on a miserable day for the club
that saw long-standing predecessor, Tony
Hancock part company with the club.
We would like to once again express our
sincere gratitude to Tony for all his efforts
over the best part of the last decade.
With a tinkering of largely the same squad
- and the signing of Dave Storey from
Boxgrove, Probee – ably assisted by Neil
Redman and Head Coach, Grahame Vick –
saw his side go on to win 13 of their
remaining 16 games, scoring 26 goals in
their final six game in the process to
deservedly take the Permier Division title,
and will bring Sussex County League
football back to Walton Lane for 2014/15,
following a successful ground grading
inspection at the end of May. A brilliant
achievement, chaps!
Similarly, the reserves had a change of
management mid-season. James Ash –
who had taken his side on an incredible
run of one defeat in their opening 11
League fixtures – made way for senior
players in Paul Wilkins and Ben Evans steer
the side to a third place finish in Division 3
(South).
The club committee were keen to align the
Reserves with the first team back in the
Sussex County League set-up, and we
were delighted that this request was
accepted.
As a result, the Reserves will play in the
West Division next season, being given
some stern tests at the likes of Selsey,
Littlehampton Town, Loxwood, Wick &
Barnham United and Sidlesham, raising
the standards both at the quality of
opposition and grounds they will visit,
which we hope will be a positive step for
player movement into the first team and
vice-versa.
The stand-out achievement for the club
off-the-field, as we successfully applied for
Sport England’s ‘Inspired Facilities’ award,
gaining a total grant of £51,125 to
modernise our clubhouse, kitchen, toilets
and dressing rooms.
Club President, Bob Probee and myself got
the ball rolling in November, however
there is one man who we owe a big debt
of thanks to for our ultimate success –
Colin Smith.
We found Colin’s details in Grassroot
Media monthly magazine (providers of our
dressing room advertising boards). His
monthly coloumn gives advise on
fundraising at voluntarily run sports clubs
like ours, and with his experience and was
a significant influence in our ultimate
success, and to whom we are extremely
grateful.
The timing of the award was ideal, as in
the short-term it enabled us to meet
Sussex County League ground grading
criteria more readily, and we thank
contractors, Brymor, for their help.
However, the over-arching project goal
was to make the club sustainable longer-
term and increasing participation – for
example, through new youth teams – and
we believed making much needed
improvements to the building (much of
which is still original from the 1970’s)
would help attract these groups and open
the door to wider revenue streams.
Work is still on-going, with all building
work bar decoration is expected to be
complete towards the end of June.
Decoration will be done in July, so we’ll
have a much improved facility to both
enjoy, and welcome visiting teams to next
season – an exciting prospect.
Only last week did we receive
confirmation of a further £3k grant to
support proposed new youth teams at
under 13 (poss 14’s) and under 16’s next
season.
The finance – from the Football
Foundation’s ‘Grow the Game’ award - will
support new kit, facility hire, referees fees,
league and affiliation fees, first aid kit,
coaching courses and CRB checks – giving
our prospective new teams a really strong
basis in which to flourish.
Youth has historically been at the core of
the clubs’ footprint, and after a year out,
are delighted to be able to offer local
youngsters an opportunity to once again
participate in team sport and develop in a
safe and enjoyable environment.
We hope to hold an open trials day over
the summer (more details to follow)
amongst other initiatives to attract both
new players, parents and volunteers for
the new youth sides.
We successfully achieved our FA Charter
Standard Status in April - a kitemark which
acknowledges clubs and leagues that are
well run and sustainable; provide quality
coaching and in a safe environment.
The FA Charter Standard kitemark was
launched in 2001 and now has 6800 clubs,
with 653 advanced level Community Clubs
and 300 leagues.
We have since received a certificate and
plaque (proudly displayed on the
clubhouse bar), in addition to three Nike
match footballs as a result of achieving
Charter Standard status.
As well as being our first team manager
and resident right-back, Andy Probee also
has invested significant time and effort in
making our pitch the envy of the League
this season for which we are extremely
grateful, and thought it only right that
Andy be recognised for this.
As such we put Andy forward for the
Sussex FA ‘Groundsman of the Year’
award, and were privileged to welcome
Southampton Football Club’s Head
Groundsman to Walton Lane who was
impressed with the standard given the
level we play and equipment available.
He was also on hand to pass on useful tips
in addition to assessment.
We will advise of the final result on the
club website as soon as we have it.
It should be added that a well maintained
ground also brings benefit to local
families, children, and Bosham Primary
School, who use it on non-match days.
Well done, Andy!
The website – www.BoshamFC.co.uk – has
continued to gain momentum and grow in
both quality and audience – with around
100,000 views last season (Google
Analytics verified). It forms part of the
Pitchero network (over 5,000 non-league
football club sites); and from the second
half of the season has been consistently
ranked inside the top 10 – positioning us
against clubs as high as the Football
Conference, some six divisions above. The
site - alongside our growing Twitter
account (approaching 750 followers) and
Facebook page, has really helped increase
awareness of the club this season. We
thank Carl Payne for contributing his
match action shots and Alan Price for his
match reports.
Thanks to the efforts of former BBC
Southern Counties Radio presenter, Steve
Sheppard, and his wife, Chrissie, we
successfully set-up a live online match
commentary service (via
Mixlr.com/Robins_Radio) – another move
that is fairly unprecedented at a club of
our level.
This has almost doubled our attendances
‘virtually’ and has been embraced by all –
including the players when interviewed
after a game – all of which is then available
for download via MixCloud.com/
BoshamFC.
We aim to make this service even more
comprehensive next season, and extend
our thanks to Steve and Chrissie – who are
big supporters of the club and this
venture.
with the Robins one of only two Sussex
clubs to feature in the top 50.
Site Editor - and one of the judges - Phil
Watkins, said: "We all stated that for the
level that Bosham play, the programme
was exceptional for reading content,
design and information.
He added: "The programme would make
anyone attending a match feel in a good
mood on receiving their copy, and is
considerably better than many clubs
playing at a much higher level.”
We look forward to renewing some old
rivalries in making a return to the Sussex
County Football League set-up for the first
time since demotion in 2010/11.
Am sure that the Sidlesham local-derby
will be the first game we all look for when
the fixtures come out.
The Sussex County Football League AGM is
on Tuesday, June 17, after which time we
should have more information as to the
constitution of both Division 3 and the
Reserve Section West Division.
We believe that no team will be promoted
from Division 3 - the top two of Langney
and Ferring both denied, and have both
parted company with their managers.
Rottingdean look to be bolstered by the
signing of a number of signings from
Brighton League champions, Hair Razors,
who defeated Bosham in the Intermediate
Cup earlier in the season.
Hurstpierpoint meanwhile, are set to join
forces with Burgess Hill Albion of the mid-
Sussex League to become ‘Burgess Hill &
Hurst Albion’, playing at Hurstpierpoint’s
ground.
The programme was given a completely
new look at the start of the season with
both improvements to design and content.
We are grateful to support from Express
Printers in Bognor, who produce our
glossy match magazine for all home
games.
Their staff, including Paul, Penny, Naomi
and Roy have been so accommodating –
often at short notice (sorry!) - with the
finished article produced to a high
standard that really helps us stand-out.
We are also grateful to the Photoshop
skills of Carl Payne and former Bosham
Youth player, Charlie Fearn, for their help
with the fetching cover designs, and to
Dick Doncaster for collecting the finished
product. Thank you guys for all your
support.
As a result, Bosham scooped a merit in a
national programme awards, and were
placed 43rd nationally overall from over
900 entrants from the Conference down,
days and alongside Callum, in setting up
the pitch. Our thanks also to Bob Probee
for his assistance with the Sport England
award; Mat Jackson for running the line
for the first team and being a welcome
and valued new face on the committee; to
Carl Payne for his photos alongside the
Chichester Observer; to our contractors
Brymor for all their help with the
modernising of the clubhouse; Bosham
Parish Council, and of course, to the
players and management who did the
business on the pitch to get us promoted!
Apologies if I’ve missed anyone out!
On a personal note, I must give massive
thanks to my girlfriend, Kate – who has
been unbelievably patient of my key-
tapping at all hours in order to help keep
the club on track with the various funding
schemes and on-going efforts with the
website and programme. My gratitude
extends beyond words especially since the
birth of our son, Thomas, two months ago.
With the unprecedented success Bosham
have had, I’d like to think that I’ve gone
some way to justifying my behaviour!
I’m sure many of the other wives and
girlfriends at the club can empathise with
Kate as their men are drawn in by the
‘Bosham Bug’ at our friendly and
progressive club, - but hopefully tonight
will be a great opportunity to make
amends with us all under one roof in
celebration!
There is a great buzz around the club at
the minute and long may that continue,
giving us great cause of optimism going
into the future. We’ve received positive
feedback from a number of clubs since our
Sport England award came through, with
Bosham now regarded as a ‘model’ club
for grassroots football in the area –
incredible to think how far we’ve come,
and is something that makes me
immensely proud to be involved.
Enjoy your evening, and Up the Robins!
Simon .
Our pre-season line-up is beginning to take
shape, with the announcement of three
confirmed friendlies.
The Robins visit Sussex County League
Division 1 side, Selsey on Saturday, July 26
(3pm), prior to a further stern test at
Wessex League Division 1 Champions,
Petersfield Town, on Tuesday, July 29
(7.30pm).
A trip to fellow Wessex Leaguer's, Hayling
United, is next up on Tuesday, August 5
(7.30pm).
Further friendly dates will be announced
on the website as soon as we have
confirmation.
We have a number of opportunities
available to suit a range of budgets for
businesses interested in partnering with us
in 2014/15.
More details – including a full commercial
pack download - can be found on the
‘Commercial’ link on our website, or you
can e-mail Commercial Manager, Simon
Jasinski – [email protected].
The club owes much thanks to our small
band of loyal volunteers and club
committee, that form the ‘heart-beat’ of
the club.
Once again we are indebted to Alan Price
for his sterling work in the role of
Chairman and Secretary; Gerry Doncaster
as Treasurer, and long-serving Dick
Doncaster for continuing to turn his hand
to a number of tasks; April Mathieson for
her help with in the refreshment kiosk,

DENNIS PROBEE
It was with great sadness to learn of the
passing of Bosham Vice President and Life
Member, Dennis Probee, on May 9, aged
89.
Dennis - father to club President, Bob, and
grandfather to current first team
manager, Andy - was instrumental in the
development of both Hampshire and
Sussex football over the years.
A true gent, wonderful coach and even a
footballing visionary, Dennis formed
Portsmouth Royal Navy Football Club in
1962 with the intention of bridging the
gap between the United Services
midweek league and the full Royal
Representative side.
Dennis was also a former manager and
highly respected coach at his beloved
Bognor Regis Town, and regarded by
many as a pivotal figure in the clubs'
success in the 1980's; mentor to long-
serving manager, Jack Pearce, and latterly,
Darin Kilpatrick - not to mention the many
players who donned the green-and-white
jersey over the years. Dennis later took up
the post of Vice President at Nyewood
Lane.
His input into youth football also cannot
be underestimated - nurturing players
such as Simon Rodger, who went on to
carve out a professional career at Crystal
Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Sussex FA subsequently formally
recognised Dennis's service to developing
young footballing talent in the area, in
naming their under 18's FA County Cup
after him.
Dennis was also a welcome regular on the
side lines at Walton Lane, where he would
often offer grandson - and first team
manager - Andy, some words of wisdom
before kick-off.
Dennis was remembered with a game in
his memory (see below), and it was
perhaps fitting that Bosham were to win
the League this season playing the ‘Dennis
Probee way’ – something he would have
been very proud to have witnessed earlier
in the year. Dennis’s funeral was on
Thursday. We extend our sincere
condolences to all the Probee family.
Bosham and a Sussex XI line-up for the camera ahead of the inaugural Dennis Probee
Memorial Cup in May – a game Bosham won 4-2 on penalties, after a 2-2 draw.

A Big ‘Thank You’…
To All Our Sponsors
Formed in 1901, Bosham were founder members of Division Three of the County League in
1983/84 following a long and established period within local football. Their inaugural season at
the higher standard ended with a commendable fourth placed finish. The following year of
1984/85, the club finished runners-up to Oakwood, winning promotion to Division Two. To cap a
very successful season, Bosham also won the Division Three League Cup – a feat they were to
repeat in 2009/10.
Having won promotion in 1985/86, Bosham had mixed fortunes in senior football with their best
effort a sixth place finish in 1990/91, although the following season they were relegated back to
Division Three after seven years at the higher level. However, in 1993/94, they were promoted
back again as champions – albeit a short-live success, as the following two seasons saw
successive relegations back to the West Sussex Football League.
Following an overhaul of both players and management, Bosham enjoyed a resurgence on the
pitch resulting in one of their most successful seasons ever in 1998/99, winning the coveted
‘treble’ of the West Sussex Premier Division; Malcolm Simmonds Cup and the Centenary Cup – a
feat no other club has achieved.
1999/00 saw Bosham champions once again, making a welcome return to senior football and
scoring 109 goals along the way – an average of 3.6 per game - although following a mid-table
finish in 2000/01, The Robins found themselves bottom of the pile the following year and ‘yo-
yoed’ back down to Division 3.
The club once again struggled in Division Three, but a late revival saw them finish one place off
the bottom, five points clear of Uckfield Town. Although a relegation position, the resignation of
Oving – coupled with only Wadhurst United meeting the requirements for promotion - spared
them the drop.
Until 2006/07 – a year when Bosham were once again reprieved after a picking up the Division
Three wooden spoon – there had been signs of improvement, with the club appearing
reasonably comfortable in Division Three after many up and down seasons; and in 2004/05,
reached the Final of the Sussex Intermediate Cup, where they were defeated by Rustington.
Cup success again afforded the Walton Lane side in 2008/09 when they were beaten by a
solitary goal to nil against fellow Division Three side, Forest, in the final of the same trophy.
However Bosham did find the winning formula the following season, drafting in a largely
youthful squad alongside one or two more experienced heads, to lead the club to the Division 3
title for the third time; the Division Three Challenge Cup, and the Team of the Year award.
Unfortunately, league ground grading regulations were to this time go against Bosham and they
were denied a place back in senior football. Despite this knock, the club managed to keep the
majority of the side that earned their top spot the previous season, and gallantly went on to
finish in fourth place in 2010/11.
In September 2011, Bosham won a sponsorship deal with home improvement retailer, Wickes,
and featured in national newspaper, The Sun. Bosham fought off 300 other non-league clubs to
win the competition. The windfall funded a make over for the changing rooms, new kit, training
equipment and coaching.
After encouragingly winning six of their opening nine league games of the 2011/12 campaign,
Bosham finished 9th in Division 3. However, the club were demoted to the West Sussex Premier
Division for the start of the 2012/13 season, owing to ground grading regulations.
Under the guidance of Tony Hancock, the Robins finished in third place in their return season in
West Sussex Premier Division. Despite a positive start to the 2013/14 campaign, Hancock ended
his ten year reign in charge of The Robins, with long-serving player Andy Probee taking over the
role in November 2013 – who successfully guided the club to the Premier Division title, and back
into the Sussex County League.
Although Bosham have never competed in the FA Cup, they were entrants to the FA Vase
between 1986 and 1990, however in facing stiff opposition, never managed to win in this
competition.
