Sincere Condolences to:
Mrs. Billie Williams and family on the loss of her dearest mother, Pauline Pitts, who passed from this world on Tuesday, September 18th .
Also, To Mr. Arthur Frazier and family on the loss
of his beloved wife, Karen Frazier, who passed away on September 19th.
Let us keep both families in our prayers.
My dear Parishioners,
Today, St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church is celebrating
Catechetical Sunday. During the ten o’clock Mass we will
commission our Catechists as well as those who assist them
in this extremely important work—the education of others,
especially the young— in the rudiments of the faith. The
theme of this year’s celebration is “Living as Missionary
Disciples,” a task not simply confined to our Catechetical
ministers, but one which can and should be undertaken by
all of us, especially parents and guardians. Unfortunately,
some Christians mistakenly think that only the ordained or
those specifically appointed are to catechize others. Not so.
All the baptized are called to be disciples of the Lord and to
be sent by him to carry on his mission in the world. No
matter what our status in life, we are all expected by the
Lord to grow in our knowledge and love of God throughout
our entire life but also to accept our baptismal commission
to share that knowledge and love with others. Instilling that
knowledge and kindling that love in children is primarily
the responsibility of parents and guardians. Catechists, cler-
gy and religious assist parents in this important roll but they
cannot take the place of parents who are steadily with their
youngsters. The Rite of Baptism for Children clearly points
this out when parents are instructed to bring their children
up in the faith and Godparents are asked if they are willing
to assist the parents in this most important endeavor.
So, today, as we observe Catechetical Sunday, let us remind
ourselves to encourage and support one another in our com-
mon vocation. As individuals and as community we are
called to witness to our faith by living as missionary disci-
ples. Let us recommit ourselves to bringing the “Good
News of Jesus Christ” to our children certainly, but also to
all who await that saving Word.
—Fr. Jerome, C.P.

Catechetical Sunday - Saint Paul of the Cross - October 24, 2017
Catechetical Sunday is a special day when catechists are recognized and honored for entering into the
ministry of sharing the Word of God. Parents and guardians are also honored because they are the true first catechists, sharing the Catholic faith with their families from the moment of the first
breaths of life. Let us thank the Lord for such extraordinary guidance that is given in our homes and at Saint Paul of the Cross through our amazing Catechists!
