CurriculumThe Common Core Standards give teachers a reference to plan lessons around what students should know, the rigor of the tasks in the lessons, and the level of proficiency of student performance.

We want our students to read deeply and think critically!

MathWe begin with number sense. Students first understand that digits make up a number and compare numbers. Then we can add and subtract 1- and 2-digit numbers. We also learn graphing, money, time, measurement, fractions, geometric shapes, length and area, and capacity and weight. All through out learning these concepts, students learn the procedure to solve word problems.

Our reading block is a combination of skills, strategies, listening, and reading.Every day we practice vocabulary, phonics, reading in our Anthology, being reading detectives as we look at and use comprehension skills and strategies. We do this as a whole group, but then work in centers and meet in small reading groups that meet individual needs. In every subject, we learn in collaborative groups too!

We connect our writing to what we read in our reading block. We will use mentor texts as models to guide the students in their writing. We focus on beginnings, the body of the piece, and endings. We practice grammar and reflect that in our writing also. Students will learn to write to inform, to persuade, and to entertain.

Snacks and BirthdaysWorking Snack Time!

We will be having a small snack around 10 am each day. Please send in a snack with your child that is no more than a handful of something. I usually have pretzels in the class if someone

doesn’t have a snack.

*This is a working snack and instruction will continue while snacking.

BirthdaysYou may bring in a birthday snack as long as it is peanut-free and store-bought with a label. I will give the treat out during

‘working’ snack time. Your child also gets a birthday book and pencil from the office.

Looking for good choices!Every student should be happy and comfortable

in our classroom! I promote positive attitudes and a love for learning. The goal is for students to take ownership of their choices. One visual way students can keep in check is through Class Dojo and with the color system. Blue – Outstanding ChoicesGreen – Ready to LearnYellow – had a warningOrange – more than 1 warningRed – repeated behaviors that have interfered with learning

Field TripsField trips are still in the planning process. We have in-house presentations on Soils and Bridges that relate to our science units.

PTA covers $10 for each child to attend trips and parents are asked to cover the balance. Make checks payable to Second Grade Fund and write your child’s name on the Memo line. Please send in an envelope with your child’s name on it.

Permission slips will be sent home closer to the event and I will request chaperones at that time.
