Our Cooperative Classrooms

This year your student will have Mrs. Jackson for reading and Social Studies and Ms. Thomas for Math and Science! Classes will be grouped into the red class and green class. The green class will start the day in Mrs. Jackson's class and switch to Ms. Thomas' class after lunch. The red class will start the day in Ms. Thomas' class and switch to Mrs. Jackson's class after lunch.

Class Goals

Develop our brains and grow new neurons by:

• Learning new skills

• Discovering new interests

• Making new friends

• Having fun and supporting each other

• Exercising daily

• Learning to eat healthy food

Classroom Community/Guidelines

Our classroom guidelines help us get along with each other:

• Listen and follow directions.

• Raise your hand before speaking.

• Keep your hands and feet to yourself.

• Respect your classmates and your teacher.

In our classrooms we help each other and everyone gets what they need.

Classroom Management• We use positive discipline to encourage students to make positive choices in and

out of the classroom.

• We expect all students to follow the guidelines, but sometimes they forget. When this happens, here’s what your student can expect:

First time a guideline is broken = warning

Second time = logical consequence

Third time = letter home which must come back to school the next day signed

by parent or guardian

Fourth time = meeting with the parents, student, and teacher.

Homework PolicyAccording to research there is almost no evidence that random homework helps elementary school students achieve academic success. We find that meaningless homework often causes family problems and takes time away from valuable learning experiences that can happen before and after school hours. We will not be assigning regular weekly homework. Instead we will assign homework as needed. This policy allows our students to:

• read more at home

• enjoy more loving family time

• experience fewer fights with their parents

• spend more time outdoors playing

• give them time to practice skills that they need to address

• take more classes such as dance or karate

• be less stressed

There will be occasions when homework will be assigned, but it will be meaningful.

Language Arts Goals

Read and comprehend, independently and proficiently, text of at least grade level complexity.

Phonics and Word Recognition: Read grade-appropriate multisyllabic words in and out of context.

Fluency and Print Concepts: Read grade-level text with sufficient fluency and accuracy to support comprehension.

Vocabulary: Use strategies to determine the meaning of words or phrases in grade-level text.

Understand: Summarize specific elements by citing textual evidence, including theme or main ideas/details.

Analyze: Analyze how an author's decisions contribute to clarity of message.

Transfer: Compare/contrast, make connections or integrate knowledge from sources.

Math GoalsBuild student mathematical thinking and problem solving aptitudes by developing an understanding of:

Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Use four operations to solve problems, determine factors and multiples and analyze patterns.

Number and Operation/Fractions: Compare and understand equivalence, apply operations with unit fractions and whole numbers; use and compare decimal fractions.

Measurement and Data: Convert measurement units; measure angles and represent / interpret data.

Geometry: Draw and identify lines and angles: classify shapes by properties.

Write numerous pieces over short and extended time frames to communicate effectively in all subjects.

Knowledge: Conduct short research projects investigating different aspects of a topic.

Field Trips• This Fall we will be investigating the properties of rocks and plants at the Red

Butte Gardens, University of Utah.

• Also this Fall we will be visiting the "This is the Place Heritage Park" to explore Utah history and our state's Pioneer roots.

Volunteers: We will send a sign up sheet for volunteers

to accompany us on fieldtrips. For safety and liability reasons,

siblings ARE NOT allowed to go with us, sorry.
