A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JOSHUA FRANKLIN

Be Deliberate in Judgement

On a recent fall day, I woke up ready to spend the day fishing with a friend. The air was mild; a cool calming autumn breeze wafted through the trees, and the sky was a crisp blue with the accent of a marshmallow cloud here and there. I have little experience fishing in the waters of the East End, but this seemed like an ideal day for fishing. As we pulled up to the dock and began to unload our poles, the boat captain greeted us with an apprehensive face. “Before we go out,” he said, “I want to show you something.” He took us to a nearby beach, and pointed out to the distance. “There are sustained winds

of 20 miles per hour out there,” he began, “and it’s only going to get worse.” He talked about how the tides made the conditions even more treacherous; all things that were a little bit beyond my level of nautical comprehension. What had seemed like a nice day was actually a dangerous day to go out!

The captain’s methodical thinking reminded me of a concise piece of rabbinic wisdom from the proverbial book Pirke Avot (The Lessons of the Fathers). "הוו מתונים בדין, be deliberate in judgement." Far too often we invest a great deal of faith in our gut feelings and our instincts. While sometimes we are correct, we more often than not fail to think through decisions with the proper amount of deliberation and patience. Trusting our amateur instinct about fishing would have proved dangerous that day. We needed a calculated and data-driven judgement about the conditions on the water. So too, our tradition teaches, should we judge others and the world around us with careful and measured consideration.

Pirke Avot offers more insight on how we might exercise deliberate judgement. The great Rabbi Hillel follows up noting that "ואל תדין את חברך עד שתגיע למקומו, don’t judge another person until you have come to his place," or perhaps more colloquially, don’t judge someone else until you’ve stood in their shoes. Have empathy, Hillel demands of us. The one way that we can properly judge others is to take the time to balance our judgement with an empathetic compassion. The rabbis offer the parable of a thin glass. If you put hot water (judgement) in it, then it will expand and break. If you put cold water (compassion) in it, then it will contract and shatter. If the world is filled simply with compassion, then no one would be concerned with the consequences of their actions and our society would be lawless. If it’s filled only with unadulterated judgement, then it would shatter from the harshness of justice. When our judgement is tempered with deliberate compassion, we not only improve communal and social relations, but we find that we exercise better judgement.

Two thousand years after Pirke Avot was written, the Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman echoed some of the Jewish wisdom of his ancestors in his book, Thinking Fast and Slow. Kahneman points out that each of us process the problems and situations around us with two kinds of judgement. The first is the intuitive fast-thinking response that we tend to favor. The second is a slower, more deliberate and effortful form of thinking. Kahneman through this book demonstrates how we invest too much faith in fast thinking, and neglect slow and deliberate thinking. We do so with weighty consequences. The simple rabbinic dictum summarizes Kahneman’s 500-plus page masterpiece, be deliberate in judgement." The book is still worth reading! There is a time and place הוו מתונים בדין"for fast thinking, but wisdom is born from slow intentional thought and judgement.

If you are interested in exploring more wisdom from this compilation of Judaism’s greatest proverbial hits, I invite you to register for my Adult Lunch and Learn class, which meets in Manhattan on Tuesdays from 12:30–1:30pm, and in East Hampton on Fridays from 12:15–1:15pm. It's time to think about mental health at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons

SHABBAT REFLECTIONS: MENTAL HEALTH SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18 | 12:30 TO 2:00PM

Let's have a conversation that we are too often afraid to have. Let's talk about mental health and mental illness. Join us for a Shabbat reflection as we discuss how to respond to the mental health issues facing our community.

"This past summer our community received a seemingly endless string of phone calls from victims of mental illness, and from their families who suffer along with them. I try so hard not to bring home our community's stress to my wife and my two-year old, but the sheer amount of pain I saw pushed me to the limit. There were nights that my mind ruminated on the agony of our community. For nights on end I couldn't sleep. Mental Illness has already taken my friend Mike just over two years ago. In my role as a rabbi, I've sat with teenagers at their bedside after their attempts to end their lives, I've visited congregants in psychiatric facilities, and I've counseled numerous people struggling with mental illness. This summer was unlike anything I had ever seen. So when call after call came in, I began to realize that our community needs to act!"

WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY

When those whom we hold close to us die, we yearn to find a way to consecrate and honor their memory. As we sit in our beautiful landmark sanctuary, we are warmed by its loveliness, soulfulness and openness to the world of the spirit and the physical world around us. We feel ever closer to God.

You can enshrine the memory of your loved ones by inscribing their name(s) on a pew plaque in the sanctuary. In that sacred space you will connect to the bonds between them and the divine.

A Pew Plaque in our Main Sanctuary may be purchased for $5,000.

Membership helps support the wide range of programs and activities offered at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons. Your dues also help maintain the beauty of our sanctuary and the upkeep of our buildings and grounds. We encourage everyone to take full advantage of the wide array of religious, intellectual, cultural and social events at the JCOH.

Take this opportunity to dedicate a Torah Commentary in honor of a loved one, to celebrate a special occasion, or in memory of a loved one.

Celebrate a Simcha or special occasion by sponsoring the Kiddush following Shabbat services on Saturday morning. Please note that 3% of all donations are given to MAZON – A Jewish Response to Hunger.
