HISTORICAL TIDBITS FOR THE LEGACY PROJECT

From Carolyn Lafever

The music of the early Centerville Christian Church was sung

without instruments. Many musical instruments were available but

there was a difference of opinion about accompanied singing after the

Reformation. Luther favored educating worshipers to sing well with

accompaniment, but other more conservative groups rejected musical

instruments as being too worldly. To help improve congregational

singing, four-part a cappella singing was taught.

Singing schools became popular in the early 1800s. Singing

masters would come to the community for two or three weeks and

hold a singing school, usually at the church or school. The shape-note

or “fa-so-la” method was developed to teach students to read music.

The music master earned his fee by selling his books.

Singing schools were most popular in the South This new learning

greatly influenced the quality and enjoyment of congregational

singing.
