Dear Friends; As we stand in the middle of a beautiful summer, we often forget about tragic

events in our Jewish history. Unfortunately, our calendar does not afford us this luxury for long. Yearly, we observe the sad anniversary of the destruction of both of our Temples in Jerusalem. This year, the three week morning period begins with the fast of the 17th of Tammuz on July 11th, culminating with the fast of Av on August 1, 2017.

Many question, why is it necessary to fast for something that transpired so long ago? It happened, we and our parents and our parent’s parents didn’t live through it, it obviously it should not today have any further relevance. This premise is the far from the truth. Factually, the 9th of Av is historically the most tragic day of the Jewish calendar.

Besides the destruction of the two temples on this date, the Spanish exile began. You must be thinking, ok, that’s also ancient history. We’ve recovered; move on! Wait a second, that’s not all. World War I started on the 9th of Av. Most historians would agree that the WWI was the impetus to World War II. We as a nation know what happened during the 30’s and 40’s of the twentieth century, the Nazi Holocaust. Coming from that conflagration was the term, “Never Again”. Schools throughout America teach youth about the Holocaust, why? “Never Again”. We as Jews have the responsibility to remember not only “Never Again” from eighty years ago, we must remember it from 600 years ago. We must remember from 2000 years ago. We must remember from 2500 years ago. Otherwise, when we forget “Never Again’, be sure the enemies of the Jews of that generation remember. Our best defense is the offense of memory and determination to make sure it in reality never happens again!

In this vain, the Rabbis of yesteryear ordained this mourning period. To remind us that while in exile, we are not completely safe. Therefore, our calendar lets us remember, “Never Again”. May the summer months truly be ones of satisfaction, good health and prosperity. We should merit the ultimate goal of our people for the ages. The coming of the true Messiah, the rebuilding of the Temple and the complete reunification of the Jewish people.

Summer is just around the corner, but as the air becomes warmer, and the sun begins to shine, viruses are lurking around the corner, and you must stay protected. Have you ever considered getting a Pneumococcal vaccine? Did you know according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention older adults and seniors are at greatest risk of developing pneumococcal infections?

There are more than 90 types of pneumococcal bacteria. Currently there are two types of vaccines, which offer protection against 36 of these sub-type viruses. You can receive protection against illnesses like meningitis, bacteremia (blood stream infection), and pneumonia, through vaccinations.

What is Pneumococcal Disease? It is an infection caused by a type of bacteria called Streptococcus

Pneumoniae. According to the CDC, Pneumococcal disease is a leading cause of vaccine-preventable illness and death in the United States. The Pneumococcus bacteria can be found in many people’s noses and throats without causing disease and are spread by coughing, sneezing, or contact with respiratory secretions.

Who should get vaccinated? Anyone over the age of 65 years of age. Anyone who has certain health problems, weakend immune system, smokers, and adults with asthma.

How do I get vaccinated and protect myself? Speak with your healthcare provider today, don’t wait to get protected.

Margo SchlesingerA SURVIVORS STORYBy: Lieba Semel Grade: 5School: Joan Dachs Bais Yaakov Margo Schlesinger survived the Holocaust

1: Where are you from? Berlin Germany, 1918

2: What was it like before the war? My parents were a religious Jews. I had four brothers and one sister in my family. I went to a German school in the morning and Hebrew school in the afternoon. I had a good family and we were close. I had a happy childhood. Then the war broke out and we had to hide and split up.

3: Did you hide or were you on Schindler’s list? Yes, I was on Schindler’s list. There was 300 Women and 700 men. Then the Germans came and took the hundred women and brought them to a camp. Schindler came to the camp and said I want my three hundred Women back. The German said I will give you three hundred new women but Schindler said no, I want my women back so the German gave in and Schindler rescued the 300 women. 4: Were you ever warm?I was never warm but I was young so I was able to deal with the cold. 5: Did you have food?We got a piece of bread every morning and a cup of coffee. If

someone was almost going to die from hunger, they got a bit of butter.

6: where did you hide your money?I took all my money, dishes, fabric put it all in a box and hidden underground so after the war we would have something to live on. My mother’s jewelry was given to a friend to hold until after the war.

7: Did your family get separated and if you were how did you find each other after the war? Two brothers hid, one brother went to China, one brother and my sister went to Eretz Yisroel. We all survived the war, but out of six children, I am the only one still alive.

8: How old were you during the war? I was 20/21 and now I am 98 and in July, I will be 99.

9: Were you scared? You eventually come to a point when you are not scared anymore because you don’t know what you can and can’t do and what will happen. I had faith in Hashem that I will come out alive. At one point, I wanted to give up and my husband encouraged me to never give up. Once I was going to run away but a Gestapo said if I run away than he will shoot me so I didn’t run away.

10: Is there anything else you want me to know? I got married in 1942 during the war. There is so much to say, if I say it all it will take up the next five pages so I will have to stop now. The End
