Personal Project Background A significant student directed

inquiry produced over a period of time.

It is an independent project for which your child selects his or her topic.

International Baccalaureate Organization places great importance on the expression of your child’s unique talents.

Research

Students are expected to complete research on their topic. – They may be passionate about the topic,

but are not experts and references need to be cited in the final paper.

Research needs to be documented in their process log.

Practice research activities will be modeled in ELO to ensure student understanding.

Research Can Include: Interviews of people

knowledgeable about the topic Surveys pertinent to the topic Observation/Experience such as

job shadowing or watching a pertinent film on the topic

Books, journals, internet resources A variety (3 or more) of sources is

expected.

Documentation and Journaling Students will be expected to keep a “Process

Journal”. In this journal are notes and comments

regarding problems and solutions as well as evidence of the work involved during each stage of the design cycle.– Referred to as a map of the project.

A requirement throughout the MYP curriculum.

Project Ideas

Realistic Project– A student who

has studied piano for a number of years and decides to write and present an original musical piece.

Unrealistic Project– A student

decides to learn to play the piano. (Not realistic in 6 months.)

Project Ideas

Realistic Project– A student

organizes a food drive for a local agency.

– Learn about the job of being a veterinarian.

Unrealistic Project– A student sets

out to stop hunger in the community.

– Learn how to become a veterinarian. (Takes five years of study after college)

Implementation

Throughout the course of the school year, one day per week has been designated as Personal Project work days in your child’s ELO.

All 10th grade ELO’s have been provided with resources to assist your student through the duration of the project.

**Note: Work must be done outside of school in order to have the project completed.

Your Child Is NOT Alone… Your child will be choosing a

supervisor here at school that will monitor the progress your child is making. They may also choose a mentor from outside Reagan.– Ex. If your child is interested in

researching anaerobic –vs- aerobic exercise, they would have me as a mentor.

– Needs to contain students’ thoughts, decisions and actions.

The ELO teacher will help get the students started on this.

This ongoing log is the responsibility of the student.

Written Paper– Students will be asked to bring three

(3) copies of the paper on the presentation day.

Presenting the Information Your child will have a total of 10

minutes to present an overview of the project to a panel of three (3) trained assessors.– Reagan teachers, Wedgewood

teachers and community members– 7 areas of assessment that are

worth 4 points each for a total of 28 points.

Rewards

All students will receive a T-shirt upon completion of the project.

All students who present their project to the panel of judges will be treated to a luncheon afterwards.

Students who receive a score of 20 points or higher will be able to go on a field trip in May.
