Dear Parishioners,

Congratulations to our seven young men who were ordained transitional deacons a week ago at the cathedral. These seven will be ordained priests, God willing, at the cathedral on May 30, 2020. Please continue to pray for more vocations. By the way, did you know that there are three levels of holy orders? The three levels are deacon, priest and bishop. All bishops and priests are first ordained deacons. Since these particular deacons are on the way to priesthood, they are termed “transitional” deacons (as opposed to “permanent” deacons, like Deacons Ron and Neon and John).

Congratulations and gratitude are in order for Helena Ditko. Helena has agreed to chair the Safeguard the Children Committee. This is a very important ministry geared to enhancing the protection of all of our young people. Thank you, Helena!!

There have been some complaints about the usage of cell phones in the church. I think cell phones are perfectly fine for following the readings and prayers of the Mass. No problem there. I have an app on my phone that help me when I attend a Mass in another language or if I have a problem hearing or understanding what is taking place when travelling, for example. However … ahem … it is a different story when it comes to texting or talking on the phone or playing games or checking out the latest Kardashian escapades. I think we know that. Let’s practice holy usage of our devices while in the church. Amen? Thank you for being respectful of God’s house and our fellow worshipers.

Archbishop Jose Gomez has called a gathering of all of the priests who belong to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for the purpose of renewing our priesthood. Father Luis Espinoza and Father Sam Ward and I ask that you pray for us and for all our brother priests during these days of prayer, discussions and fellowship, which are scheduled for August 26-29. We will be away from Monday noon on the 26th until mid-afternoon on the 29th. Fr. Marlon (who is not yet incardinated into our archdiocese) and Fr. Samuel will be holding down the fort in our absence.

Mark the date: September 8th!! Mass on the Grass. It’s an annual Mass and all are welcome. It takes place outside on Louise St. at 5:30 PM. The Mass is followed by a social at the high school yard.
