CommunicationAssignment Books

Assignment books are available to purchase in the office for $4. Your child will need 2 assignment books to last the entire school year. An adult must sign the assignment books nightly to indicate that the assignments listed have been completed. If your child struggles with one of the assignments, please make a note in the comment section.

NewslettersA classroom newsletter will be sent via email on Monday. The

newsletter will highlight what was taught throughout the week and highlight any important upcoming events. There are some exceptions

to this.

CelebrationsBirthdays

We have a birthday book club in our classroom. Your child may donate an age appropriate book to our classroom library in honor of their

special day. If they choose to do this, a label will be placed in the front of the book to remind others of their generosity for years to come.

Please do NOT send in invitations unless the whole class is invited.

Holidays/Classroom PartiesThere are sign up sheets available tonight if you’re interested in

volunteering for our classroom parties. Please remember that in order to volunteer, you must have Protecting God’s Children and a BCI on file

with the Diocese.

HomeworkGrammar/Spelling

Students will have grammar and spelling homework every night with the exception of Friday. A workbook will come home each night. Students must complete one page in the workbook that correlates with what was taught during the school day.

Homework is meant as a review and not an added stressor. It will be checked for completion ONLY. I am asking YOU to check the homework for accuracy. If you find that your child does not understand a particular concept or experienced difficulty in completing an assignment, please let me know so that I can reteach.

Remember, we are a team. The one-on-one attention that your child receives from you at home is invaluable. It will help reinforce the idea that everyone is involved, both teacher and parents, and that we all care about their success!

HomeworkMath

Your child will also be bringing home a math workbook. The math homework will depend on the completion of a lesson at school. It is my goal to complete one lesson a day. However, sometimes a concept may be particularly challenging and may require 2-3 days to teach. In this case, I will only assign the worksheet once the students are ready to move on. If math homework is assigned (they will have it most nights), it will be noted in the assignment book.

Students are expected to practice math facts DAILY. It is expected that your child has already mastered their addition and subtraction facts. They will need to master their multiplication and division facts by the end of their grade. They can do this by completing computerized practice via Math Facts In a Flash, X-TRA Math, or any other app or game that you have found to be effective in the past.

STAR AssessmentsStudents completed STAR testing over the last week. They completed the STAR math test on Friday, August 28th, and the STAR Reading test on Tuesday, September 1st. These assessments are computerized and taken at least 3 times a year (August/September, December, May). These tests provide me with valuable information and feedback to determine instruction.

Accelerated Reader (AR)Students are expected to spend a minimum of 20 minutes each night reading. They will be given a reading log at the beginning of the week and expected to complete the log & turn it in on Friday.

Students will be assigned a points goal each month. They earn points by reading books and taking AR tests on these books. This goal is an individual goal and based off of their STAR Reading Assessments. In addition to their points goal, they also have a comprehension goal of 85%. I will be conferencing with the students frequently to ensure that they are working towards meeting their goals.

Be sure to sign up for home connect. This allows you to receive email alerts when your child has completed a test. There is a hand-out explaining how to do this if you haven’t already done this in the past.

Accelerated Math (AM)AM is a program that is offered by the same company as AR. This program provide enrichment opportunities for students in math. Each student will be assigned objectives to complete based off of their STAR Math assessments. In some instances, students will have concepts that have not been taught. Because of this, there are built-in help features in the program. Students can watch a Kahn Academy video that teaches them how to do this new concept. These videos are also helpful for concepts taught that may have been forgotten, or not quite understood when they were taught. Students practice these objectives at home and then take a test over the objectives at school.

Students have been assigned a goal of mastering 7 objectives each month at an 85% mastery level.

Standards Based Grading Graded assignments & assessments will receive an √, I, or N.

√-indicates that your child is meeting third grade standard expectations.

I-indicates that your child is not meeting the third grade standards consistently.

N-indicates that your child has not begun to master or understand the standard being assessed.

Graded work will be passed back on Friday. It will be located in your child’s pass back folder. You must sign the folder indicating that you have reviewed the work with your child, and return it on Monday.

Re-take policy has changed

Rewards Each month that your child meets both their AR & AM goals,

they will receive a homework pass to be used at their convenience. Any child who meets both goals throughout the entire school year will earn a pizza party with me at the end of the school year.

Monthly class reward for responsible behavior

SCAAP-certificates are handed out prior to SCAAP Day.

ConsequencesPunch Cards

Students will receive a punch card at the beginning of each month. The card has 12 possible punches on it. If they fill up the card (all 12 punches) within the month, they will be ineligible for SCAAP and the classroom reward. Behaviors that warrant a punch would be such things as missing homework assignments, not obtaining a signature in their assignment books, behavior infractions that would have resulted in them turning their card in previous grades, behavior slips, detentions and losing their punch card.
