NASAP 67TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE: “HEALING OUR COMMUNITIES THROUGH SOCIAL INTEREST” • MAY 30-JUNE 2, 2019 • TUCSON, ARIZONA

FRIDAY LUNCH PANEL • MAY 31 • 1:00PM • 1 CE HOURTransformation of Community Groups and Agencies to Become Trauma-Informed and Trauma-Sensitive

Local experts from various community agencies and settings will be discussing how to transform institutions and communities to be trauma informed. Panelists have training as varied as cultural psychology, pastoral care, school psychology and social work. Their professional experiences in issues of abuse, dealing with juvenile courts, and public schools and the impact on health and wellness will be illuminating. Moderator Joyce DeVoss is a leading Adlerian member of NASAP.

FRIDAY NIGHT KEYNOTE • MAY 31• 7PM • 1.5 CE HOURS Healing Anxiety in Adolescents: An Integrated Approach

Victoria Maizes, MDHealing Anxiety in Adolescents: An Integrated Approach will be an interactive presentation. Anxiety, which can be situational or chronic, is extremely common in the United States; up to 38% of girls and 26% of boys aged 13 – 17 experience it annually. While pharmaceutical approaches can be helpful, they are most effective and safest when reserved for short term use. A large body of evidence supports the use of nonpharmacological therapies including exercise, nutrition, mind-body practices, acupuncture, and some dietary supplements. Dr. Maizes will review the evidence-based strategies for managing anxiety in adolescents.

Dr. Maizes is Executive Director of the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and a Professor of Medicine, Family Medicine and Public Health. Internationally recognized as a leader in integrative medicine, she stewarded the growth of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine from a small program educating four residential fellows per year to a designated Center of Excellence training more than 500 residents and fellows annually. Dr. Maizes has pioneered multiple innovative educational programs including two national models for educating primary care physicians. She led a team of educators developing objectives for medical students in integrative medicine.

A graduate of Barnard College, Dr. Maizes received her MD from the University of California, San Francisco, completed her resi-dency in Family Medicine at the University of Missouri, Columbia and her Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. She has published numerous articles and book chapters on integrative medicine and is the co-editor of the Oxford University textbook Women’s Integrative Health; Be Fruitful: The Essential Guide to Maximizing Fertility and Giving Birth to a Healthy Child, which was published in 2013. In 2009, Dr. Maizes was named one of the world’s 25 intelligent optimists by ODE magazine.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS • 6:00PM-7:00PM

Poster presentation time at our conferences are always stimulating and inspiring opportunities for one-on-one engagements with presenters, with ample time to ask ques-tions and compare experiences.

Just as the conference is winding down, we circulate infor-mally (perhaps with a glass of wine in hand) to hear from and see posters illustrating research of graduate students, as well as mini-presentations from colleagues sharing work that might not lend itself to a full session.

Student presenters get to have their work seen, and to sharpen how they present their ideas by engaging with seriously delighted veteran Adlerians.

Poster sessions are not to be missed: they form the cap-stone on a conference filled with the exchange of new ideas and the traditional; new ways of looking at time-tested methods; and explorations of applications of Adlerian Psychology into the 21st Century.

STOP IN THE BOOKSTORE/NASHOP & STOCK UP ON GREAT ADLERIAN RESOURCES. VIEW THE DOCUMENTARY “SADIE ‘TEE’ DREIKURS: PARTNER IN HISTORY” SCREENING ALL THROUGH THE CONFERENCE.

We’ll be enjoying dinner together and some concluding business and socializing as the conference ends. This dinner is included in your 2-day conference registration at no extra cost. Guests are welcome for a per-plate charge of $50. Sign up guest(s) when registering.
