Cover Rationale
For this year’s installation dinner, the Rotary Club of Kelana Jaya
adopts a theme to give the function a greater sense of atmosphere
and fun. We call it simply, ‘Shanghai Splendour’, evocative of old
decadent Shanghai. This souvenir programme’s cover design
suggests the grandeur and splendour of that historic city, fabled in
the 1930’s as the Paris of the East,with its Art Deco facades and
glitzy cabarets.

Just like a participant in a competition, I can see the finishing line orchequered flag. To me it is the culmination of a year of satisfaction and asense of achievement as I have successfully completed most of what Ihave set out to do. I would not have been able to do this without thesupport of my fellow club members and the community at large.
Success, they say is not a destination but a journey and I am glad that Iwas not alone in making this journey. I have benefited from the advice ofour Past Presidents who have come forward when called upon. I alsoappreciate the support given by my members, be it with encouragingwords or hands-on approach.
I would also like to mention that being a family oriented club, I value thesupport I have got from the spouses and other family members. Theywere there not only for our fellowship events but also attending andbeing involved in our projects.
Last but certainly not least, I would also like to thank our sister club, theRotary Club of Taipei Bak Hai for their undying support of our projects. Ithas been proven that our two clubs can work together to forgeinternational understanding and goodwill.

Vocational Service,the Second Avenue of Service in Rotary is the way Rotary fosters the application of theideal of service in the pursuit of all vocations. Inherent in Vocational Service ideals are:-
• Adherent to, and promotion of, the highest ethical standards, in all occupations, including faithfulness and fidelity toemployers, employees, and associates, fair treatment of them and competitors, the public and all those with whomone has any business or professional relationships;
• The recognition of the worthiness to society of all useful occupations, not just one's own or those which are pursuedby Rotarians;
• The contribution of one's vocational talents to the problems and needs of the society.
• Vocational Service is both the responsibilities of a Rotary Club and of its members. The role of the Club is toimplement and encourage the objectives by frequent demonstration, by application to its own actions, by exampleand by development of projects that help members contribute their vocational talents.
• The role of the members is to conduct themselves, their business, and the professions in accordance with Rotaryprinciples and to respond to projects which the Club has developed.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 12September 2002 between RC Kelana Jaya, Yayasan SosialStrategik (YSS) and Asian Pacific Development Centre(APDC) for this project and a cheque presentationceremony was held on-site on 23 October 2002.
The project is sited at the Sri Trengganu flats in BandarBaru Sentul. The project is directed at the youth, mostparticularly those belonging to the socially andeconomically disadvantaged such as poor householdsand single-parent households. One of the biggestproblems in the area are youth vandalism and drugaddiction. The project aims to promote productiveactivities that will attract the interest of the youth andwean them away from socially deviant activities. Theobjectives of the project are:-
• To determine the modalities for equipping poorhouseholds and / or single-parent households,particularly the youth of these households, with basicprofessional skills such as computer application inorder to improve their prospects of finding a job.

Workshopssessions will be structured in such a way that youthtrainees will be encouraged to exchange their experiences,the technical difficulties they encounter, and theira s p i ra t i o n s. At the end of the project, it is hoped that the tra i n e e swill continue to interact with one another and exchangeinformation on job opportunities or business possibilities.
Third is the participation of RCKJ members in theinteraction with the youth trainees. RCKJ members will beinvolved in the training sessions as resource speakers.Each RCKJ member who will be involved in the project willshare his/her own experience in managing a business or inmanaging relating to other people.
Fourth is the transfer of knowledge and skills from thetrained youth to other youth in the project. The trainedyouth will serve as instructors or tutors for subsequentyouth trainees in the future, thus ensuring the ‘multipliereffect’ of the project.

VOCATIONAL AWARENESS
Classification Talk
Three of our members gave us a talk on their Vocation.First was Rtn Omar Shaari, our Vocational Service Directorwho gave a classification talk on 17 October 2002 on hiswork in the field of advertising. It was a very interestingmultimedia presentation.
Next was Rtn Chow Chee Phing, our Honorary Treasurerwho talked to us about his work as a Chartered Surveyor.His talk was on 17 April 2003. He gave us a lot of facts abouthis profession, most of which are not known to us.
The third member to talk to us about his vocation was RtnAS Peter who is from the airline industry. Rtn Peter isactually from the aircraft maintenance side so he kept histalk very light and conducted more as a Q & A session. Thisis because his work is of a technical nature and it would beboring to us who are not technically inclined.
Case Study
RC Kelana Jaya organized a "Case Study" sessionconducted by Encik S Hadi Abdullah from the MalaysianInstitute of Management on 23 January 2003. A case wasput forth where an employee of a multi-national companywas asked to increase the amount of his tender so that itcovers the cost of a bribe. A discussion then ensued on how bestto deal with this action, i.e. whether to accept the bribe ornot to accept the bribe and how go get out of the situationwithout dire consequence.

On 16 February 2003, the club visited the Pusat Kanak-Kanak Wawasan at Pandah Indah. This is a small homewith about 26 children and 13 elderly residents. Some ofthe children and elderly residents are mentally retarded.The home is privately funded. The club then distributedangpows (some sponsored and some personal) to theresidents of the home. They were also given a medicalcheck-up by Rtn Dr Hari. The members also brought somerecyclable items for their recycling sale (one of their meansof earning income). Counseling Room Project
Following the club's project last Rotary year to provide aMultimedia Room for Ward KK3 of Institut Pediatrik atHospital Kuala Lumpur, the club was called upon toprovide a counseling room for the same children's cancerward. This is because at present they have no such facilityand counseling has to be done in either the doctor's ornurses room. This counseling refers to the time when theparents are first told of their child's condition. As thehospital has run out of space for this purpose, it wassuggested then that a cabin should serve the purpose.
On 20th January 2003, the club ordered a 20 ft cabin forthis purpose with funding by various local sponsors and aUS$2,000 donation from our sister club, RC Taipei Bak Haiin Taiwan. The company from which we ordered the cabinalso gave us a RM3,000 donation. It was scheduled to bedelivered either late February or early March. The cabinwas finally delivered on 12 March 2003.
One of the main local sponsors was Puan Sri Mei Chin, thewidow of the late Tan Sri Dato James Peter Chin. She gavethe club RM5,000 with the condition that we name theCounseling Room in memory of her late husband. Tan SriDato James Peter Chin was a very prominent Rotarian andbefore his death, rose to the post of Rotary InternationalDirector, a first for someone from this part of the world.
An official handing over ceremony was planned and TanSri Dato Lee Lam Thye, Chairman of the Visitors Board ofHospital Kuala Lumpur was called upon to officiate at theevent. A computer was also presented to the ward,courtesy of Datuk Robert Phang from the Social ActionInitiative Foundation.
A bag of goodies was also prepared for each and everychild of the ward.
