WelcomeWhere does the time go? It seems like only a year since we last had to write

the foreword to the Culture Night Programme. A lot has happened in the intervening time. For one thing, we’ve hit ten years old. Or to put it another way

– 21 September 2018 will be our TENTH Culture Night. Hard to believe that when we started way back in 2009 our modest ambitions were to attract a few thousand people to Writers’ Square and the surrounding area for a few hours

of shared cultural celebration.

What happened that night ten years ago may have been small, but it was perfectly formed, and bursting with potential. Year on year, those seeds we

planted on the fertile ground of the Cathedral Quarter have grown. And how! 2017 didn’t just see us break the six-figure mark – with over 100,000 of you

lovely people descending upon the city centre to “Culture Night” with us (we’re determined to have it adopted by the Oxford English Dictionary as a verb).

It also made us realise, perhaps for the first time, that Culture Night might just be the definitive event in our amazing city’s cultural calendar.

Holding this fine-looking programme in your hand, as you are now, it can’t have escaped your notice that we’ve landed some of our best artwork yet for Culture

Night Belfast, courtesy of artist Holly Pereira. One glance at Holly’s lovely upgraded amend to ‘60s psychedelic vision for us, and it won’t take a genius to work out that this year’s Culture Night theme is “Love”. Love in ALL its forms. Love of our city, love of Culture Night and love and respect for each other. Love is all you need… By remarkable chance - or is it fate? - 21 September is also UN World Peace Day. So expect the tenth Culture Night Belfast to be the loveliest,

kindest and huggiest yet. Oh yeah, and the best!

In keeping with the spirit of the moment, we hugely look forward to bringing a lot of cultural love into your life for one glorious enchanted evening. With

hundreds of amazing spaces, places, organisations, businesses and performers in the loving mix, we promise we’ll have you laughing, dancing, singing,

thrilling, double-taking and becoming best friends with complete strangers by the end of the night. Culture Night has always been about sharing the love and the cultural wealth that our city possesses, and for one night, imagining what it

would be like to live like this all of the time!

So welcome friends, strangers, cultural adventurers all. Because, as the song almost says: We’ve got the love to see you through!

What’s New Every year Culture Night just keeps growing, getting bigger and better. This year

we have lots of our old favourites returning – it wouldn’t be Culture Night without Street Countdown or a bit of PWU Wrestling but we also have lots of new stuff for you to enjoy. There’ll be music on every street corner from some of the best

emerging local bands and performers. There’ll be dancing and urban sports over at the Big Fish. There’s also a chance to wander along Belfast’s newest waterfront promenade and enjoy some fabulous circus performances. At City Hall there’ll be a celebration of culture on one of our two World Stages as well as the Big Birthday

Party. If food is your thing we’ll have a whole host of amazing street food along North Street. There’ll be all the usual fun and games in and around the Cathedral Quarter and we’ve also got a very special treat in store for you at Writers Square.

This is gonna be the best 10th Birthday Party Ever!

Visit our new enhanced website for all the listings, news and visitor information you’ll need to enjoy Culture Night.

Thank you to everyone who voted for us in the National Lottery Awards! We’ll hear the result on Culture Night so hopefully we’ll have something else to celebrate!

Transport and Parking Our advice is to leave your car at home, if at all possible. We have worked hard with Translink and statutory agencies to make travel by bus, train, bike or foot

as easy as possible. If you do need to bring your car, parking around the site is limited as there will be no on-street car parking spaces available within the Cathedral Quarter including Donegall Street, North Street, Union Street, Kent Street, Academy Street, Exchange Street, Hill Street, Waring Street, Skipper

Street, Talbot Street and Royal Avenue. However there are ample parking facilities located around the city centre. Please see our website for more details.

Food and DrinkTo complement the excellent restaurants and cafes throughout the City, our Culture Bites strand will feature some of the best local street food vendors

offering fabulous flavours from around the world. Please remember that Culture Night is a family friendly event and intoxicated

behaviour will not be tolerated. Culture Night is not a ‘bring your own’ event and usual street drinking legislation applies.

Disabled AccessInformation for disabled people and visitors who are not familiar with the venues is available through adaptni.org. While we endeavour to ensure full accessibility on Culture Night, the pop up nature of much of the activity will mean that some events may not be fully accessible. If you would like a large print version of this

programme please contact [email protected] or call 028 9031 4011.
