Upper Valley.  Enjoy your trip! If you are taking any road trips these days, it's clear bythe number of roadside signs that there  are some hotlycontested elections coming up.  Please be sure toidentify and support candidates who reflect yourpriorities about land conservation and historicpreservation.   The New Hampshire Association of ConservationCommissioners will be holding their annual meeting andconference on November 1st at the Laconia MiddleSchool.  For more information, goto www.nhacc.org/annualmeeting44.

It's a tough job...

... and we are happy to do it.  Our staff is small.  VERY small.  Two full‐time and two part‐time employees.  Thus, it's all hands on deck to visit the sitesof the current round of applicants.  We try to get to any sitewhich we haven't seen before, and squeeze in a visit to someof our previous grant recipients as well.

We visit these sites to inform them, to get the back story, toget updates on how things stand since they filled out that 19page application back in June.  We ask deep questions like,"Sooooo...  Do you really expect to raise the match fundswith a bake sale?" or "You say there are six siblings, two ofwhich aren't speaking.  Do you think it realistic that they'll

agree to put the land under conservation?" After we tell them that we have just over $3 million to fund 53applicants who have requested over $4 million, someshoulders fall.  "This is actually good news," says ourExecutive Director, Dijit Taylor, "We have fewer applicantsthan last year and full funding."

We, the LCHIP staff, are merely the messenger in these visits‐ it's the LCHIP Board of Directors who will decide on whogets how much.  Sure, we get a bit dusty and have had towalk through fields of poison ivy, but they have the toughestjob:  choosing among the dozens of projects worthy ofprotection and preservation. Driving around the state this month has been more of a perkthan a curse.  We have explored forests and fields surroundedby stunning foliage.  We have climbed ancient steps intoattics and bell towers, and walked through town hall theaterswhich are no longer open to the public.  So, we apologize that we have been out of the office morethan in.  We'll settle back in come November, when we haveto summarize all our observations for the Board.

We're happy to do it.
