FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

Precision isn’t everything

Straighten yourselves out!

There is such a thing as military precision – I’ve actually seen it – but I think we save it for the

most important occasions. The arrival of a dignitary does

not qualify. I don’t know if I have ever been involved in a Guard of Honour that came off on schedule. You learn to just shrug and remember that flexibility is the key to air power.

One time Sherry and I arrived 45 minutes early for a parade to receive a visiting general. As bandmaster and 2 i/c, we had to meet the other 4 Wing Band members as they showed up and get the band ready

for the ceremony. But when we got to the hangar,

the guard was all formed up and ready to go, and the general’s party was stepping out of their aircraft. With just me on trumpet and Sherry on trombone, we rushed into place, confident the two of us could do a creditable job of playing the General Salute.

Sherry did fine. Me, not so much.

When the general came around to inspect “the band,” such as it was, I stepped forward and saluted. “Good afternoon Sir, a small portion of the 4 Wing Band

is on parade…” Here it became awkward, as I realized there was only one person left in our ranks for the inspection.

“…would you care to inspect my wife?”

He laughed. Sherry laughed. The two of them had a good-natured brief chat, and he made his way back to the dais. I readied myself to be smartly struck on the head by a trombone, but there was no impact. If Sherry swung her horn at me, she missed.

So much for military precision!

Carrier of the MonthMadison Johnston, who delivers

The Courier to our readers in the Beaver neighbourhood, is our Carrier of the

Month for December.Congratulations, Madison, and thanks!

People should be willing to admit their mistakes. A lot of people think that’s a form of weakness, but when you realize that the people you work with and who lead you are human too, I think it develops a deeper sense of cooperation and team-building.

Be more open-minded and less quick to judge.

People should be more aware of others on the road. Such as if you’re driving the speed limit in the left lane, or less than the speed limit in the left lane, all the way through town. Move over to the right lane until you need to turn left. And use a signal light once in a while, that helps too.

Try not to be so selfish, and do things for other people even though it might not benefit you.

In my personal opinion the whole world would be much better if they stopped trying to tell other people how to do their job.

I read somewhere, “more heart – less attack.” I think that’s probably my resolution.

ATF - Romania deployment “a true victory,” commander saysJEFF GAYE

Canada’s Air Task Force (ATF) in Romania completed its four-month mission in support of Operation Reassurance and Block 45 of NATO enhanced air policing (EAP) on December 31.

EAP is a peacetime collective defence mission that defends the alliance’s airspace.

The members of ATF-Romania were mainly from 2 Air Expeditionary Wing, Bagotville, and 4 Wing Cold Lake. They were supported by personnel from other Canadian Armed Forces bases.

In addition to the EAP mission, the ATF conducted regular training with its Romanian hosts. This included training in medical support, flight safety, aircraft maintenance, command

and control, and military policing. ATF-Romania also conducted activities in support of local communities, including delivering donations to an orphanage.

ATF- Romania’s CF-18 Hornet crews trained alongside Romanian Air Force MiG-21s, F-16s and Puma helicopters, in addition to Portuguese F-16s, US Army Blackhawk helicopters and NATO airborne warning and control systems (AWACs).

The CF-18 crews also

trained with French and Romanian vessels in the Black Sea.

LCol Mark Hickey, commander of ATF-Romania, said the four-month deployment went well.

“It was excellent, a true victory from my point of view, and something everyone is extremely proud of,” he said.

“We got a chance to not only support our Romanian partners, but the NATO alliance as well. And there were plenty of

opportunities to conduct force generation training activities with our NATO allies – a big win as far as I am concerned.

“I didn’t quite know what to expect coming over here, but the opportunities to train were excellent.”

LCol Hickey said the ATF flew more than 250 missions and more than 350 hours. “From the pilots to the technicians to everyone involved in any type of support role, everyone pulled together to make the mission

a success, and further solidify our position in the NATO alliance and alongside our Romanian partners,” he said.

“Not a single challenge was thrown at us that we couldn’t overcome with teamwork and dedication. All in all, it was a true honour to be the Air Task Force Commander leading this outstanding team.”

The deployment was the fourth time the RCAF had come to Romania with CF-18s. LCol Hickey said the cooperation with

Romania was excellent. “They’ve been extremely gracious and have treated us like part of the family,” he said.

And as the deployment drew to a close last week, he also had high praise for the support from the home front.

“The true heroes are the families and friends left behind that take care of our kids, homes, families and loved ones,” LCol Hickey said.

“Without your support we truly would not be able to carry out this mission on behalf of Canada and do what we love to do, so a sincere thank you from me for all of your support.”

A T F - R o m a n i a was composed of approximately 135 personnel and four CF-18 Hornet fighter jets. They began operating in Romania in September.

AVERAGES & EXTREMES

Try to remember that thaw in December

As we head into the New Year and put the past years weather behind us, and our days starting to get longer again after the winter solstice, what does

Mother Nature have in store for us? Average temperatures for January consist of mid-

minuses to overnight lows dipping to -35 or colder. Let’s hope we don’t reach the record low of minus 48.3 set in 1954 – that is cold! January is also the month for snow, with the record set at 46.4 cm in 1994. Bring out the ski-doos and dog sleds because we just may need them.

And what a December we have had, with mild temperatures and dry weather by Cold Lake standards. We

did experience those bitter cold temperatures, thankfully not reaching the record low of minus 44.4 set in 1963, but I bet we are all happy about that! In December we only saw 5.7 cm of snow and 1.0 mm of rain, leaving us with a trace amount of snow on the ground – well below the historical average of 17 cm.

As another year comes to a close, our weather in Cold Lake has been up, down and full of surprises. From early December with temperatures around +10 to end of the month lows near -36. Let’s hope for a just below freezing, snow filled January that is perfect for hitting the slopes.

And remember, plug those cars in!

CAF launches medical training competitionTHE MAPLE LEAF

The competition for a September 2018 start in a Canadian medical school within the Military Medical Training Plan (MMTP) has begun with the recent release of CANFORGEN 174/17.

The MMTP is a competitive in-service selection plan that provides CAF members with the opportunity to receive a fully subsidized medical education at one of Canada’s 17 medical schools.

The program subsidizes four years of medical school and a two-

year family medicine residency program. In return, the incumbent serves an additional five-year period of obligatory service (OS). The MMTP that it gives serving members an opportunity to learn a new skill while they serve their country.

LCdr Melanie Espina is a successful MMTP candidate. She transitioned from a career as a naval combat systems engineering officer to a medical officer, graduating from the University of Ottawa Family Medicine Residency Program in 2012.

“The process of applying to medical school was challenging, as the prerequisites for each school are slightly different,” she said. “It took me a few years to take all the required courses, and I sought out mentorship from a serving medical officer at my local base to assist me with the application process.”

The educational funding from the MMTP, in addition to the full salary and benefits, took away some of the financial stress that affects most medical students, allowing LCdr Espina to concentrate on her studies.

The Cold Lake Marlins Swim Club had 28 swimmers turn out for their first splash meet of the 2017 - 2018 season at the Col JJ Parr Sports Centre.

The goal of the splash meet is for swimmers

to have fun while reinforcing their required competitive swimming skills. The meet is an opportunity for new and returning swimmers to experience a swim meet atmosphere in their home town. It also helps foster team spirit and sportsmanship.

TAMMY BUCHANAN, HEALTH PROMOTION MANAGER

Looking to make healthier choices this year? Blast Off the Pounds (BOP) is a new program developed to help members lose weight and start a regular exercise regime. The Health Promotion team, in collaboration with the Fitness and Sports crew, is committed to helping you make your positive changes “stick” this year.

The 12-week program incorporates a diet component, training sessions, injury prevention and a visit to the grocery store, as well as pre- and post-program evaluations using our new InBody 570 body composition analysis machine. Participants are asked to commit to training a minimum of three times per week, and to attend a one hour theoretical session weekly. Applicants will be selected and interviewed and must be supported by their supervisor.

The pilot project for this program has shown surprising results. The average participant’s age was 43 years old and the average weight loss over the 12 weeks was 15.2 pounds. On top of weight loss, a significant increase in physical capability was observed. More importantly, testimonials showed real changes in lifestyle habits, an impressive improvement in participants’ health, a decrease in medication use and even medical changes.

If you want to make positive health choices and improve your body composition, there is an information session about the BOP program on January 18. It will be held in the Activity Room on the second floor of the Col JJ Parr Sports Centre from 12:10 to 12:50.

The program will begin on January 25 and run to April 12. For more information, contact Tammy Buchanan, in the Health Promotion Department at (780) 840-8000 extension 7127 or at [email protected].

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

Six new year tips for Christians

Here is the new year, and with it the resolutions: “I will lose a few kilograms”, “I will run” ... I wish you that with all my heart, but experience tells me not

many of us will succeed. How can we make this year better? Well, unfortunately

there is no universal solution. But here is a completely subjective list of New Year’s tips - straight from my head, my heart and my personal experience.

Instead of making resolutions, prayInstead of all the resolutions, decide on just one thing:

“This year I will come into a closer relationship with God.” You will see your life change consistently by the power of His grace. You might find that you do not have to force yourself to look after yourself, because God will reveal how much your body means to you and you will want to take care of it. You will realize how much you want to become better, because God has a good plan for you. Do

only one thing - pray. The effect is guaranteed and sealed with your own experience!

Instead of asking for love - give loveThis is probably the most delicate and painful spot in

all of us - the desire to be loved. God reveals to us that love might be experienced, not only by receiving it, but perhaps above all, by giving it.

Clean upBad habits, a messy space, bad relationships – we all

know it. Having a good life motivates us to clean up our soul!

When life becomes overwhelming, we immediately clean up where possible on both physical and spiritual spectrums - for example, washing the dishes and vacuuming, or going to confession. When we do this, the Holy Spirit immediately appears, pouring new, better thoughts onto us. So clean up!

Think like GodOur negative thoughts about ourselves – that we

are unable to do things, we are unworthy, we will not succeed; or that nothing ever changes in my life, it is not worth getting to know me – are frightening.

As a child of God, you have to say STOP to all such thoughts! You cannot change this thinking with a magic wand, it requires courage, consistency and discipline to find out what God thinks about us. Do you realize that God thinks all the best things about you? Take the Holy Bible and read how beautiful, wise, worthy and loved you are! The more you absorb this, the more your self-esteem will be healed. Start thinking about yourself as God thinks

about you and everything will change for the better.Thank, love, be grateful

Give thanks for everything, even the bad things. God’s logic is unusual - He can transform bad into good! By thanking for the bad things, in the sense that every experience, through His power, can come to your advantage, you open yourself to an infinite blessing!

Be honest about much good you have encountered in life. Stop complaining. The simplest gifts are the most beautiful. You live, you are healthy, you have friends, you have something to eat, you have a job – we could go on and on.

Ask for more - because there is more!God is infinitely good and He has more for you. If you

think your only goal is to have a good and happy life and peaceful death, you are wrong. Your life can mean more, and be more, than you expect. You can experience real miracles every day, and what’s more, these miracles can happen through your own doing.

So do not just try to hold on to what you have achieved, do not overly care about what you got from God, in fear that you will lose it in a moment. God has more every day and certainly has more for you in this new year. Ask for it bravely!

Good Dad, you are infinitely Beautiful, Good and Faithful. Thank you for this year. Give us all even more, because without You we can do nothing!

Even if you have a Canadian Armed Forces pension plan, or belong to another pension plan, there are still many reasons to consider contributing to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). Besides the fact that it is an easy way to start saving, here are more reasons to contribute:

1. Building up that nest egg can supplement your retirement income;

2. Contributions are tax deductible

3. Savings grow tax free4. A spousal RRSP can reduce

your combined tax burden5. You can borrow from your

RRSP to buy your first home under the Home Buyers’ Plan (up to $25,000) or pay for your or your spouse’s education (up to $20,000) under the Lifelong Learning Plan

You can contribute up to 18 per cent of your earned income from the previous year. This amount will then be deducted from your income

at tax time. For 2017 taxes, that means you have to contribute by March 1, 2018 to a contribution limit of $26,010.

RRSP contribution room accumulated after 1990 can be carried forward to another year. If you aren’t able to top up your RRSP contribution this year, you are allowed to make up the difference in a later year. To know this amount, refer to the “RRSP Deduction Limit Statement” section of the notice of assessment sent each year by Canada Revenue Agency.

And forget about the myth that

you need to have a lot of money to contribute to an RRSP. For as little as $25 per pay, SISIP Financial can set you up with Simple Savings Solutions under their Canadian Armed Forces Savings Plans – a quick and easy way to contribute to an RRSP or a TFSA.

There is no such thing as saving too much! Find out why you should consider contributing to an RRSP by talking to your local SISIP Financial advisor. They have the tools and resources, as well as knowledge of CAF pensions and pay systems.

laine peut suppléer à votre revenu de retraite;

2. Les cotisations sont déductibles d’impôt;

3. Les épargnes croissent à l’abri de l’impôt;

4. Un REER de conjoint peut réduire votre fardeau fiscal combiné;

Q How often should I clip my dogs nails?

AAlthough it can vary slightly on your dogs lifestyle and activity level most pets need their nails trimmed approximately every 6 weeks.

Some owners are comfortable performing this task themselves and that is great, just ensure that you are using tools designed for pet use. We recommend a set of high quality plier style pet nail clippers and a container of stypic powder in case a nail is trimmed too close. Many pet owners (especially those with more energetic pets or those with pets with dark nails) express concerns with trimming them at home. This is something the groomers at our salon are more than happy to help with, no appointment necessary!! Many people mistakenly assume our services are “all or nothing” but we have several walk in, stand alone services to help you maintain your pet in between full grooms. One of these is our walk in nail trims. We are available 6 days a week for nail trims and the service is done in only a few minutes while you wait.
