“You are the salt of the earth...You are the light of the world.”

Matthew 5:13-16

e move to w

eekly home devotionals, w

Read M

atthew 5:1-16

What is m

y life’s purpose? That is a popular and tricky question! How

w

ould you answer that question today? W

hat about 2 years ago? W

hat about 5 years from now

? Does your answ

er change?

Jesus tells his followers that they have a purpose in M

atthew 5:13-14.

He calls them

salt and light. We have these spirit goals in the previous

Beatitudes, but Jesus m

akes it very clear while striving for those w

e are to be salt and light.

In your own w

ords, what does Jesus m

ean we are salt of the earth?

What does H

e mean by light?

Salt was used differently during that tim

e. It was used far less for flavor

enhancing, and it was prim

arily used for preservation of meat and other

foods. Does this change how

you view Jesus’ charge to be salty people?

How

are we preserving a C

hrist culture today? One of m

y favorite aspects about this salt analogy is this idea that w

e need salt to live. If you are w

alking around with know

ledge of an essential ingredient to life, I hope you feel the responsibility to share that w

ith as many people as

possible.

Every night before Bear goes to bed, I like to say, “let’s shed som

e light on this situation” and turn on the stairw

ay lights. Light shows the w

ay, it m

akes things less scary, it highlights the details.

What is m

y purpose? Why am

I here? What career should I start? W

hat hobbies should I pursue? These are all fine questions, but Jesus tells us our purpose is the G

ospel. As the salt and light of the w

orld we have

a responsibility to preserve Christ in culture and to bring hope into the

world.

Close in prayer – thank G

od for Jesus’ purposeful teachings, praise God

for giving you purpose, and ask him to give you the boldness needed to

be salt and light.

Now, that w

e’ve studied the Beatitudes, our home devotionals w

ill continue w

ith the remainder of the Serm

on on the Mount. In the previous chapter,

Matthew

shared that after John the Baptist was arrested, Jesus left N

azareth and w

ent to Capernaum

. Matthew

4:17 reads, “From that tim

e Jesus began to preach, saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom

of heaven is at hand.’” G

reat crowds began to follow

Him

. Chapter 5 opens w

ith these words,

“Seeing the crowds, he w

ent up on the mountain, and w

hen he sat down,

his disciples came to him

. And he opened his m

outh and taught them,

saying...” (Matthew

5:1-2). In Matthew

5, 6 and 7, Jesus taught about the kingdom

, explaining what it m

eans to live under the reign of God. A

s com

pletely comm

itted followers of Jesus, w

e are to “seek first the kingdom

and his righteousness” (Matthew

6:33).

Begin by reading Matthew

5:13-16.

You are probably familiar w

ith this passage. The im

mediate context of

being salt and light is “Blessed are those who are persecuted...Rejoice

and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.” John Piper w

rote, “W

hen someone lives like this, it is so utterly unnatural and am

azing and w

onderful.” Paul shared a similar challenge in C

olossians 4:6, “Let your speech alw

ays be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you m

ay know how

you ought to answ

er each person.”

• W

hat does it mean to be the salt of the earth and the light of the w

orld?

• W

hat should be the motive and w

hy is this important?

• H

ow do you excel at being salt? At being a light?

• W

hen do you struggle and how can you im

prove?

• W

hat is the correlation with being deeply satisfied w

ith Jesus as our rew

ard and the ability to have gracious, seasoned words, or to be a

light in a dark situation?

May the joy of your salvation be evident to all. Pray for G

od to help you to be the salt and light to everyone in your w

orld.
