WELCOME. In the seven years since the Cheng family acquired Sun Stud, we have been buoyed by the marvelous support throughout Victoria and interstate and so we have decided to reduce service fees across the board in 2020.
Sun Stud has always regarded itself as the ‘breeders’ farm with initiatives such as ‘no payment until live foal’ – which I’m happy to say remains in play for this spring – but the fee reduction will also hopefully provide breeders with every opportunity in these unprecedented times.
Last year we introduced the ‘Chosen Son’ – National Defense – to the roster and he was ultimately the fourth most popular First Season Sire in the nation, covering 159 mares. His initial foals – in Ireland – have been given rave reviews and we eagerly await the first fleet arriving in Australia.
We’re also looking forward to the first yearlings in 2021 by Thronum, Snitzel’s Group 2 winning sprinter and a true blueblood, who has covered two elite books of mares and gearing up for a third.
The ‘Fast Stayer’, Fiorente, was Champion Victorian Second Season Sire with runners including Hawkshot, Stars of Carrum, Power Scheme and this year’s VOBIS Sires’ Guineas winner, Florent; Magnus notched up his fourth Group 1 winner (and seventh millionaire) when Streets of Avalon won the 2020 Futurity Stakes; Palentino’s first crop yearlings have made their way into leading stables and sold up to $160,000; Victoria’s most successful sire, Bel Esprit, has pushed through the 700 winner mark; Ready For Victory’s 2YOs are showing considerable promise; and Squamosa remains one of the best value sires in the nation with 2020 stakes performers including Order of Command and Kiwi Ida.
Fortunately, now that coronavirus restrictions are easing we hope to welcome you on farm for any inspections. In the meantime, I’d encourage you to contact any of the nominations team with your enquiries.
In closing I would like to wish each and every one of you success in your breeding endeavours.
Danielle Cheng Managing Director

A Champion Victorian 2nd Season Sire, FIORENTE is showing the same ‘versatility’ in the breeding shed as he did on the track.
Remembered as the ‘Fast Stayer’, his progeny include the Group 2 winners and Group 1 placed pair – Hawkshot (Autumn Stakes & runner-up G1 Australian Guineas) and Stars of Carrum (Moonee Valley Vase & runner-up G1 VRC Derby) – Group winner, Moor Gait, 2YO stakes winner and Group placed 3YO, Power Scheme and the $430k 2020 MRC VOBIS Sires’ Guineas winner, Florent.
FIORENTE is by the breed shaping Monsun (79% winners to runners, 22 Group 1 winners with 1 in 7
foals stakes winners!) and is popular in the sale ring too with his yearlings selling up to $320,000.

nvincible Spirit and sons have sired 23 stakes winners out of Danehill line mares, 14 group or graded. National Defense should be good with Danehill, as he is out of a mare by Kingmambo, whose dam is a Northern Dancer/Graustark cross, where Danehill is a Northern Dancer/His Majesty (brother to Graustark) cross. The Danehill Dancer branch,
which gives inbreeding to the Danzig/Sharpen Up cross, has been particularly good with two graded winners out of mares by Danehill Dancer, three stakes winners out of mares by his son, Choisir, and grade one winner Loving Gaby out of a mare by Mastercraftsman. Classic winner Persian King is by a son of Invincible Spirit out of a mare by Dylan Thomas, like Danehill Dancer, a Danzig/Sharpen Up cross.
Invincible Spirit and sons also have graded stakes winners out of mares by Danehill sons, Exceed and Excel (sire of Helmet, who gives inbreeding to the family of National Defense); Catbird; Redoute’s Choice (sire of Snitzel – himself already broodmare sire of an Invincible Spirit stakes winner – Stratum, Not A Single Doubt and Nadeem); Flying Spur; Dane Shadow; Oratorio; and Foreplay.
There are several stakes winners by Invincible Spirit and sons out of mares by other Danzig line stallions, including Champion Shalaa out of a mare by War Chant; Champion Brazen Beau out of a mare by Snadee; grade one winner Hellbent out of a mare by Volksraad; and graded stakes winners out of mares by Ad Valorem, Anabaa and Oasis Dream.
National Spirit is out of a mare by Kingmambo, a strain that has combined extremely well with Sadler’s Wells – the cross gives a combination of the three-quarters brothers Nureyev and Sadler’s Wells. The cross of Invincible Spirit and sons with Sadler’s Wells line mares has more than 30 stakes winners, including group one winner Charm Spirit from a daughter of Montjeu (sire of Authorized, Pour Moi and Tavistock); classic winner Magna Grecia and grade one winner Invincibella out of mares by Galileo (sire of Teofilo, New Approach and Frankel); grade one winner Media Sensation out of a mare by High Chaparral (sire of So You Think); group and graded winners out of mares by In the Wings and his son Singspiel; and graded winners out of mares by Barathea and his son Tobougg.
Fairy King is a brother to Sadler’s Wells, and there is a stakes winner by a son of Invincible Spirit out of a Fairy King mare, and five stakes winners, two graded, by Invincible Spirit line out of mares by Fairy King son, Encosta de Lago, who could be brought in through Northern Meteor (who is from the same family as Nureyev and Fairy King) and his son Zoustar, as well as Manhattan Rain, Rubick and Delago Brom. Other sons of Fairy King include Shinko King, Helissio and Falbrav.
From the Storm Cat branch of Northern Dancer, Invincible Spirit and sons have sired nine stakes winners. There are two graded winners out of mares by Giant’s Causeway, and two stakes winners out of mares by his son, Shamardal (sire of Lope de Vega). There are also graded winners out of mares by Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg and Turffontein) and Tale of the Cat. There are also stakes winners out of mares by Statue of Liberty and High Yield.
From the Nijinsky II branch of Northern Dancer, Invincible Spirit has been exceptional with mares carrying Green Tune and his sire, Green Dancer (sire of Senor Pete). There is also a stakes winner out of a mare by Ali-Royal and three from daughters of that horse’s sire, Royal Academy (sire of Bel Esprit).
Invincible Spirit and sons have outperformed opportunity with Last Tycoon line mares, getting six stakes winners, two including a classic winner, out of mares by Marju, and two including a graded winner out of mares by O’Reilly. It would also be possible to introduce Last Tycoon through Iglesia and his son, Written Tycoon.
Invincible Spirit and sons have done extremely well with Mr. Prospector line mares, getting more than 30 stakes winners. National Defense is a product of this cross, but breeding a stallion back over his own broodmare sire line often works well.
The Machiavellian branch of Mr. Prospector has been exceptional with Invincible Spirit, producing ten stakes winners, including two grade one winners out of mares by Machiavellian himself, as well as graded stakes winners out of mares by Medicean and Vettori, and stakes winners out of mares by Street Cry (sire of Street Sense and Street Boss). There are two stakes winners, one graded from the Invincible Spirit line out of mares by Hussonet. While mares by Fusaichi Pegasus also appeal here.
Invincible Spirit and sons have demonstrated a strong affinity for Halo line mares, the cross having produced grade one winner Oohood out of a mare by, Sunday Silence, grade one winner Yosei out of a mare by Sunday Silence son Fuji Kiseki. There is also a graded stakes winner out of a mare Southern Halo, and a stakes winner out of a mare by his son More Than Ready (himself sire of Sebring).
There are also group winners out of mares by Red Ransom (himself broodmare sire of an Invincible Spirit line stakes winner – Charge Forward, Domesday, Ekraar and Duporth).
Invincible Spirit son, I Am Invincible has grade one winner Viddora out of a mare by Colombia, a son of Zabeel, and a brother to Octagonal. There is also a stakes winner out of a mare by Octagonal son, Lonhro (sire of Pierro and Denman), two stakes winners, including graded winner Houtzen out of a mare by Zabeel son, Reset, and a graded winner out of a mare by Zabeel son, Savabeel. There is also a graded winner by a Green Desert line stallion out of a mare by Don Eduardo, a three-quarters brother to Octagonal.
National Defense is a Champion Two-Year-Old by Champion Sprinter and Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds, Invincible Spirit, also sire of the sensational sires I Am Invincible and Kingman.“ “

Power. Presence. Performance … PALENTINO.
An outstanding racehorse who emulated the legendary ZABEEL by capturing both the Group 1 Australian Guineas and Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes, PALENTINO is by the remarkable source Teofilo (87 stakes winners and over $100 million).
Clearly with the ability of throwing them to type, the first crop yearlings by PALENTINO sold up to $160,000 and averaged $108,888 at the 2020 Melbourne Premier.
Not surprisingly, the PALENTINOs are now in leading stables and ready to launch in 2020/21.

A stakes winner at Flemington debut as a 2YO, the Mick Price trained READY FOR VICTORY would finish fourth at his 2nd start … in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes! Indeed, his jockey, Nick Hall, believed if READY FOR VICTORY had “tracked true” he would have won the Slipper.
Importantly, READY FOR VICTORY trained on at 3 with 4 Group placings, including a 3rd to Press Statement in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, along with Group 2 Danehill Stakes, HDF McNeil Stakes & Manfred Stakes.
With his yearlings selling up to 10x service fee, READY FOR VICTORY has had just a handful of first crop runners but they include the Gerald Ryan trained, Macleay, who won impressively on debut before a close 2nd at his only other outing.
With his largest crop of 2YOs hitting the track in 2020/21, he is READY FOR VICTORY.

SUN SETS ONVICTORIAN
CHAMPION
All of us at Sun Stud were buoyed by the many, MANY emails, text, calls and social media posts voicing sadness over his loss.
Fighting Sun’s passing came just at the time that the 2020 Sun Stud brochure you now hold was going to press, and the decision was made to preserve his profile as a tribute to a much admired member of our roster.
“From the first day he arrived on the farm as a 2YO – after being robbed of his chance at winning a Golden Slipper – it was hard not to have a soft spot for the horse … he was just so good to handle,” Sun Stud’s Operations Manager, David Grant, points out.
“He was the ‘go to’ stallion for the new and less experienced stallion staff, to help build their confidence. Fighting Sun had such a kind nature and was always easy to serve mares with. He was a gentle giant.”
Sun Stud’s Stallion Manager, Amir Khan, shares the sentiments of all at Sun Stud: “He was the most loved stallion in the barn, a real gentleman and I can tell you he will be sorely missed.”
With his largest crop of 2YOs to commence racing in 2020/21 and some outstanding yearlings to be offered next year, Fighting Sun’s legacy is bound to continue in years to come.
In late June, Sun Stud announced that unbeaten 2YO and Champion Victorian First Season Sire, FIGHTING SUN, had died following an attack of colic.
Trained by Mick Price, who also saddled up Jabali for a victory in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas and 2nd in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (defeating Rubick), Jabali Ridge was 2nd on debut (beaten a neck) over 1100m at Flemington before comfortably winning his next start over 1000m at Flemington by 2 lengths – defeating subsequent Group 2 winner and Golden Slipper 5th, Hungry Heart.
The multiple stakes winner of 8 races and over $350,000 in prizemoney, Love You Lucy captured the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes at Eagle Farm in June. Love You Lucy, 4-time Group winner Savanna Amour, I’m A Rippa ($1.2 million), Mr Marbellouz etc. are all representative of the outstanding value and talent offered by Love Conquers All.

global success
t has been another remarkable 12 months for Sun Bloodstock – both home and abroad – with the Sun bred, Barney Roy, winning another Group One in January, while his Dubawi half-brother was the most expensive yearling sold throughout the world in 2019
when knocked down to Godolphin for 3.6 million guineas at the Tattersalls October Sale.
It’s been a heady few years for the ‘family’ with Sun Bloodstock purchasing Alina for just 65,000 guineas at the 2013 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. The Galileo mare was in foal to Excelebration and would go on to produce Barney Roy.
After winning his 2YO Maiden on debut for owner, Godolphin, Barney Roy has competed at black type level for each of his next 12 starts, finishing a length second to Churchill in the Group 1 2000 Guineas at only his third outing before capturing the Group 1 St James’ Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Barney Roy would also register Group 1 placings in the Sandown Eclipse and York International, returning in 2019 with a stakes win in France before a stint in Dubai earlier this year which has yielded successive victories in the Group 1 Jebel Hatta Stakes and Group 2 Al Rashidiya Stakes.
Barney Roy resumed with a brilliant third in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and is now being targeted for Australia’s premier weight-for-age, the Group 1 Cox Plate.
After foaling Barney Roy, Alina would then produce the stakes placed Wisdom Mind while, in 2018, a Dubawi colt.
After a memorable bidding duel in the Tattersalls ring, Godolphin won out again to secure Barney Roy’s half sister for the Australian equivalent of approximately $A7 million.
Both Alina, and her daughter Wisdom Mind, are currently in foal to Dubawi, sire of 183 stakes winners.
