NFPA 79 2018 Lapp USA Engineering

Definitions NFPA – The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has no power, nor does it undertake to police or enforce compliance with the

contents of the National Electrical Code. The NFPA does not list, certify, test, or inspect products or design installations for compliance.

NFPA 79 2018 Edition– Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery, applies to electrical/ electronic equipment, apparatus, or systems of industrial machines operating at a voltage of 1000 volts or less, commencing at the point of connection of the supply to the electrical equipment of the machine.

LAPP USA has actively attended and participated in NFPA 79 committee meetings for over 15 years

NEC – The National Electrical Code (NEC) is considered purely advisory as far as the NFPA is concerned. It is made available for use both in law and regulatory purposes and in private self regulation and standardization activities such as insurance underwriting, building and facilities construction, and product testing and certification.

NFPA 70 2017 Edition – The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) defines requirements for new electrical installations for any building, structure or premises. This code is used as the primary reference guide in the US by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to insure compliance with electrical installation requirements

UL – Underwriters Laboratories Inc. UL is an independent organization providing safety-related certification, testing, inspection, and training services. There are no laws specifying that a UL Mark must be used. However, in the U.S. there are many municipalities that have laws, codes, or regulations which require a product to be tested by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). UL does not, however, maintain a list of the jurisdictions having such regulations.

Industrial Platform Industrial machines and their accommodating floor installation operations such as assembly lines etc.

Industrial Infrastructure Building designed to accommodate industrial surroundings and the necessary conditions required for the operation of industrial machines such as where cable trays, raceways etc. are used

Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) The organization, office, or individual responsible for approving equipment, materials, and installation or a procedure.

The Industrial Machinery Standard: NFPA 79 NFPA 79 is the U.S. Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery and is referenced by the National Electrical Code under Article 670

This standard encompasses all of the machines’ electrical and electronic elements operating at 1000V or less (Previously 600V)

machine tools, injection molding machines, woodworking equipment, assembling machinery, material handling machinery and inspection and testing machines, etc.

Primary focuses of the 2018 edition:

Overall safety to life and property Harmonization with European counterpart Standard, IEC 60204-1 Safety-compliance at both the domestic and international levels.

Why proper cable selection should never be an afterthought

Employee and Consumer safety Reduce machine downtimes Avoid additional labor costs of replacement Avoid lawsuits and insurance liability issues Minimize potential for AHJ rejections

NFPA 79 2018: Chapter 1 – Administration

LAPP Interpretation

NFPA 79 refers back to NFPA 70 (NEC) in areas requiring further explanation that are not clearly defined in NFPA 79

NFPA Article 336 defines UL Listed TC-ER (tray cable) permitting installation within cable trays of the industrial infrastructure in addition to the industrial platform.

Examples: ÖLFLEX® Tray II, Control TM, VFD Slim, VFD 2XL, Servo 7TCE, etc.

Regulatory Requirements in NFPA 79: 2007 vs 2012 Why AWM was banned and then rescinded with future NFPA 79 editions NFPA 79 2007 omitted the use of AWM

Rationale: incorrect use in the building infrastructure, fire resistance characteristic differences, and insulation material dissimilarities concerning electrical and temperature properties

Effects: created a “Gray Area” in the industrial platform as only listed cables could now be installed

“Gray Area” – When AWM Cables were prohibited from use Applications requiring a high degree of performance became an issue (continuous flexing, torsional, etc.) Insulation and jacket materials with AWM approval only were no longer acceptable Dimensional compatibility between AWM and listed cables posed another challenge for the industry

Machine builders, installers, contractors, and designers were forced to pay a separate fee for listing of their AWM cable

assembly or faced risk of rejection from inspections

To avoid these unrealistic scenarios, AWM was added back in NFPA 79 2012 edition

LAPP was directly involved in addressing and resolving this issue with the NFPA 79 committee

NFPA 79 2018: Chapter 4 – General Requirements & Operating Conditions

LAPP Interpretation UL listed Flexible Motor Supply Cables marked with RHH, RHW, RHW-

2, XHH, XHHW, or XHHW-2 ratings are amongst several of the cable choices permitted for use in power conversion equipment.

Examples: ÖLFLEX® VFD 2XL Series

The particular cable choice is left to the decision of the equipment Manufacturer. This allows them to specify UL listed cables other than those designated above in section 4.4.2.8

Generally, overseas machinery utilizing high performance VFD and Servo motors are shipped to the US with AWM cables NFPA 79 does not have compliance issues when these AWM cables are restricted to the industrial platform

Use of TC-ER rated cables would resolve this “Gray Area” phenomenon The TC rating insures that the cables are highly fire resistant; in compliance with large scale flame testing

UL 1277 Vertical Tray Flame or CSA FT4/IEEE 1202 The –ER rating (Exposed Run) indicates that the cables pass the severe crush and impact test requirements

“Gray Area” phenomenon and it’s applicability to the NFPA 79 and NEC 70 This phenomenon refers to those areas where conformance guidelines are unclear and cannot be specifically determined but the field installation solutions provided are considered acceptable in the industrial market.

Other Listed cables such as TC-ER, PLTC-ER, ITC-ER, CMG already permitted within the industrial infrastructure can also be used on the industrial platform.

Examples: ÖLFLEX® TRAY II, UNITRONIC® 300, BUS CAN Tray, etc.

Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) is permitted on the industrial platform where it has been identified for use with approved equipment and used per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Examples: ÖLFLEX® 490 P, 590 P, FD 90, Servo 9YSLCY-JB, etc.

Permits exposed cables to be installed along the structure of the equipment or system, or in the machinery chassis Cables can be installed without using conduit or raceways, enabling an economical, and expedient installation The time and labor saved during machine installation results in a huge cost savings over traditional installation

Conclusion Ignoring specific cable requirements can be a very costly mistake, resulting in unnecessary downtime or safety issues

AWM remains as a permissible wiring method in the NFPA 79 2018 edition for industrial platform only. NEC prohibits AWM

cables anywhere in the industrial infrastructure, unless dual rated with a UL listing (TC, PLTC, ITC, etc.)

Power Conversion Equipment can utilize UL cables based on equipment manufacturers instructions

Always remember, upon inspection, any cable usage is subject to interpretation by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Only the AHJ has the experience and proper qualifications to provide final determination concerning an installation
