The children / young people go to their groups

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The word of God is living and active. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart. All is open and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we give account. We confess our sins in penitence and faith.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect

Liturgy of the word

Glory, glory to God, glory to God in the highest; peace to his people on earth, peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Glory, glory to God, glory to God in the highest; peace to his people on earth, peace to his people on earth.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer, receive our prayer, receive our prayer.

You alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory, the glory, the glory of God the Father. Amen, amen, amen, amen, amen, amen.

Blessèd Lord, who caused all holy scriptures to be written for our learning: help us so to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word, we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A reading from the book of Psalms

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is clear,

enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is pure, enduring for ever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. But who can detect their errors? Clear me from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from the insolent; do not let them have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Psalm 19: 7–14

For God’s holy word, thanks be to God.

A reading from the second epistle of Timothy

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.

2 Timothy 3: 14–4: 5 [p. 727]

For God’s holy word, thanks be to God.

420 Lord, thy word abideth

Alleluia, alleluia. Your words are spirit, Lord, and they are life. Alleluia.

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John. Glory to you, O Lord.

[Jesus said] ‘The works that the Father has given me to complete, the very works that I am doing, testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself testified on my behalf. You have never heard his voice or seen his form, and you do not have his word abiding in you, because you do not believe him whom he has sent.

‘You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that testify on my behalf. Yet you refuse to come to me to have life. I do not accept glory from human beings. But I know that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; if another comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe when you accept glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the one who alone is God? Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?’

John 5: 36b–47 [p. 728]

This is the gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Stand

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

429 Love is his word

Eucharistic Prayer

Sanctus (sung)

Benedictus (sung)

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise.

Storytelling God, you had too much love within your Trinity to keep it to yourself, and so you made a universe in which to bring forth the earth and an earth in which to raise up a people and a people in which to come among us in your Son, that we may know your purpose never to be, except to be with us in him for ever. Through patriarchs and prophets, through women of courage and kings, through the redemption of failure and the transformation of faithlessness you embodied your relentless will to abide with us. In the death and resurrection of your Son and the sending of your Spirit you turned your covenant with your people into an invitation to all the world. And so we thank and praise you, with angels and archangels, singing your song of glory.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and God of might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest; hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest; hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Blessèd is he, blessèd is he, blessèd is he who comes in the name, he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest; hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest; hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Inscribing God, in Jesus your Word was made flesh. In your Scriptures that flesh was made Word. In your Church and your kingdom that Word is made flesh again. By the power of your Holy Spirit bring your scriptural promises to fulfilment in your people gathered in your name today.

By that same Spirit, sanctify this bread and this cup that they may be for us the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Who, at supper with his disciples, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying, ‘Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me’.

After supper he took the cup. Again he gave you thanks, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Great is the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

Inspiring God, you give us your Scriptures for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness and for building us up in service to you and your world. Open your children’s hearts each time your Church opens your Word of life. Send your Spirit upon evangelists, teachers, preachers and healers, that the wind and fire of Pentecost may thrill and transform your people today. Make your Son’s disciples feel their hearts burning within them as you speak with them and they find their story in your story; until the day you draw us into your Book of Life and we are gathered between the covers of your glory, ever one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Post-Communion prayers

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Jesus, Lamb of God, Jesus, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.

Jesus, Lamb of God, Jesus, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.

Jesus, Lamb of God, Jesus, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us your peace, grant us your peace.

Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

Singer: Mary Copping

God of all grace, your Son Jesus Christ fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the word of his kingdom: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your true and living bread. Amen.

Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Go now in peace, knowing that you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be upon you, your homes and loved ones today and always. Amen.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.

Warm clothes for Afghan evacuees There has been a terrific response to last week’s appeal for winter coats, hats, scarves, gloves, school shoes and adult winter shoes for an inner-city primary school in London which has recently welcomed nearly 50 children from Afghanistan. Today is the last day for gifts, which Becky Lynch will take to London early next week. Thank you so much to everyone who donated.

Show your heart One of the refugee charities we support, Southampton and Winchester Visitors group, is inviting us to take part in the Together with Refugees campaign as a response to the Borders Bill going through parliament. (1) Print or paint an orange heart and take a photo of yourself or friends holding it, (2) Send a simple message of support for refugees with a copy of the photo to your MP, (3) Post or tweet at #TogetherWithRefugees #WhoWeAre @SWVGAction @[your MP’s twitter handle], (4) Send a copy to [email protected].

Warmest thanks to Liz Stuart for speaking about her life, and to the Friends group for organising the recent ‘evening’ with her, which raised £706 in ticket sales.

Do you enjoy a nice pub supper with friends? New convenor sought for women’s group. It’s a small monthly task: to send a group email to those who normally come, note down the number expected and book the pub on the Friday before. This is a lovely, friendly group. If you’d like to make it happen again, please contact [email protected], who has all the details ready to hand over.

No more bottle tops We are no longer collecting plastic bottle tops at St Paul’s as the depot that provided the donation to Naomi House has stopped collecting from Winchester. You now have two options: either screw the bottle top back onto the bottle and place it in your green recycling bin or bag, as per Winchester City Council instructions, or take the bottle tops (milk bottles only!) to Earthian on Parchment Street, which collects them for recycling.
