What is “Citizenship’?

- the qualities that a person is expected to have as a responsible member of a society

- citizenship education is fundamental to living in a democratic society

- “The goal of social studies is to enable students to acquire the skills, knowledge, and values necessary to understand the world in which they live, to engage in active democratic citizenship, and to contribute to the betterment of society”

Citizenship as a Core Concept in Social Studies- provides learning focus at all grades

- prepares students to participate in public engagement

- enhances students’ understanding of citizenship

- prepares students to be active participants in their communities, locally, nationally and globally

The concept of citizenship must be considered in the context of:

- democracy, human rights and public debate

Students explore citizenship in four areas:- active democratic citizenship in Canada- Canadian citizenship for the future- citizenship in the global context- environmental citizenship

What is social justice? “the notion that society should be organized in a way that allows equal opportunity for all its members” (Cdn. Oxford Dictionary)
