The Middle Years …

• Developing a sense of self. Let her explore and grow

• Make choices

• Be more independent and responsible for day-to-day learning, e.g. Homework is designed to be completed independently

• Different children grow at different paces. Accept this. Discuss with teacher if you are concerned. Keep your eyes on the goal of an independent & confident 13 year old who can pick herself up.

• Grow their general knowledge. Talk to them. Give consent to school events e.g. Traffic Games, camp. Be in school. Do not go away during the term.

• Growing interest in friends. Peer pressure. Seeing the perspective of others.

• Failure contains valuable lessons. Important: continue to foster Learning Dispositions & Values

• Importance of Daily work, reviews & teacher observation

• At P3-5, some reviews will count towards the overall results. Parents have been informed of these and the weeks in which they occur.

• Examples of such reviews: language use, problem solving, performance tasks, multiplication tables, listening comprehension tasks.

• As far as possible, these will be done during curriculum time. Moving away from exam conditions and test dates.

• From your teacher’s comments, it looks like your vocabulary has improved a lot. But there seem to be quite a bit she is not happy about where your sentence structures are concerned. Talk to your teacher and ask her how you can be a better writer.


Encourage Joy of Learning by not over-emphasisingacademic performance. Encourage and affirm your child on the progress made.

Focus on your child’s learning journey, rather than compare her with others.


Give our children the time and space to deepen learning.

Discuss with your child her strengths, interests and plans in both the academic and non-academic domains.

Be kind, consistent and firm. Be a good role model.


Working with CHIJ OLN to help your child learn

Set up a conducive home environment for your child to learn efffectively

Ask the teacher for the best way to contact him/her.

By having good home routines, you are setting your child up for life.

If you keep going to the teacher for daily updates, your child will miss the chance to learn about responsibility.

If you do your child’s homework, she will lose the opportunity to learn.

By letting your child forget, you are helping her remember.

Respect the teacher’s time. Contact the teacher during school operating hours only.


Let’s work together

• Students succeed when home and school work hand in hand to help students acquire knowledge, skills, and the right attitude.

• Mutual respect and trust forms a strong foundation for positive engagement between schools and parents.
