• Link schools, colleges, universities and other local organisations.

• £5 million to support, including additional coordinators based at the CEC, as part of a major trial to support the CEC’s work across all the Gatsby Benchmarks.

Independent report (SQW - Specialists in economic and Social

Development) produced after only one year of operation.

Relied heavily on information from Compass to assess

progress against the Gatsby Benchmarks. https://tools.careersandenterprise.co.uk/docs/digital-tools-guidance-20190129.pdf

The report does not comment on individual hubs but

takes an overview.

Personal concluding thoughts

Clearly examples of fantastic good practice, including

significant success engaging young people with employers.

However, confusing picture - particularly how Careers Hubs fit in with other local and national initiatives.

Hubs seem to have extremely wide-ranging responsibilities. Shades of duties of LLPs, (strategic partnerships) old careers services, EBPs all rolled into one – an enormous task for one or two years.

Like other programmes before, unless there is continued investment (ie a degree of funding continuity) they won’t have a lasting impact needed.

Page 22: Welcome Career Hubs What is happening out there? · 2019-12-10 · social mobility. Evaluation of Hubs end of year one (2019) ... partnership with County Council, with focus on Enterprise

Careers Hubs are just one of many projects for the LEPs so maybe they don’t get the prominence they deserve. Hubs seem to be best organised when they build on existing experienced services eg

East Sussex C360 site (East Sussex County Council) www.c360.org.uk/blog/category/education/careershub.

This Hub is not led by the LEP, but instead by the local authority – offering very good information for careers leaders and young people. PRIMARY school pupils will soon be inspired by the world of work as the county council is named the only local authority to lead on a Government pilot.

The Primary Hub - 24 schools and 8,000 pupils. Reception to Year 6 to embed career support within the primary curriculum, and will share learning from the pilot with other primary schools across the county.

Will concentrate on four activities:

• Exposing pupils to career-related learning and

employability skills in the curriculum

• High-quality employer encounters with local businesses

• Inspirational STEM activities

• Engagement with parents
