    ABOUT THE PROGRAMME 1

    Part I. About the Programme

    1. The JIMiSD at Leipzig University

You decided to pursue the Joint Master Programme in Sustainable Development and to startthis joint international programme in Leipzig. You have chosen this programme because youwant to explore into more detail what sustainable development may be about.Sustainability has become an international buzz word, used in very different contexts andoften with obviously very different connotations. According to the famous definition of theBrundtland Report (1987) of the World Commission on Environment and Development(WCED), sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the presentwithout compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It containswithin it two key concepts: the concept of 'needs', in particular the essential needs of theworld's poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and the idea of limitations

imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability tomeet present and future needs.1 While in rich countries this definition commonly isunderstood as an appeal to protect and conserve the environment, at least three quarters ofthe worlds human population focuses at least as much on the development aspect ofsustainable development with intensive endeavours to achieve a lasting (sustainable!)improvement of their social and economic situation. This dichotomy is one of the fundamental points that need to be addressed for progress insustainable development. There are many others: the importance of resource efficiencyimprovements, of technological and social innovations, of production and consumptioncycles, of rural and urban life styles, of harnessing globalisation, the international economic

order and the financial sector in particular, etc etc. In short: sustainability relates to almostevery aspect of our civilisation. What make sustainability difficult are not only its all-embracing character and the interconnectedness of problems; difficulties increase evenmore as soon as sustainability aims shall be precisely defined and made operational. In view of these challenges the JIMiSD consortium planned this programme to bemultidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, welcoming students from a wide range of scientificbackgrounds, offering a mixture of general and specific sustainability aspects as well asproviding space for developing individual interests. When working with - and within a heterogeneous student group, individual expectationsmay differ and frequently some questions arise:

    Broad or specialized?1.1

If you are not yet completely sure in what direction your future career may lead you it mightbe appropriate for you to train your analytical and scientific skills while broadening yourknowledge base. If you already know what you want to do next, it would make sense to

focus and further deepen your knowledge and capabilities in your specific field of interest. In each student group of our programme there are both types of students. With the structureof the programme we try to cater for both expectations, however it will also depend on yourinitiative how you use the opportunities provided.

    Individual or group work?1.2

The JIMiSD programme aims at developing your analytical skills in the field of sustainabledevelopment. In your master thesis you will demonstrate and apply your knowledge to aspecific topic. The master thesis will be an individual effort, even if in special cases groupwork may be possible. On your way to the master thesis, in most modules you will have towrite and present papers. Many of these shall not only be exercises in scientific writing butwill require cooperation with fellow students. As students with various academicbackgrounds are welcomed to the programme, multidisciplinary group work is an excellentopportunity for mutual learning about subjects that you do not know already and applyingapproaches from different disciplines. It is also an opportunity for training your cooperation

and transdisciplinary communication skills - soft skills that are required for any possiblefuture career. In order to make proper use of these opportunities you are advised to grouptogether with different fellow students in the course of the programme and not stick with thesame group in all modules.

Choice and sequence of subjects in Leipzig1.3

Semester 1A two-year master programme inevitably can only cover a limited number of subjects. In theJIMiSD consortium every partner university contributes with its own specific profile to thejoint programme. Leipzig University has a strong focus on economics and management

aspects with additional emphasis on infrastructure and resources management. The firstsemester should provide a common basis for all new students. In Leipzig it consists of threemodules, all of which are mandatory: basics of sustainability, introduction into socialtheories of globalisation research, and basics of economics:

Basics in Sustainable Development is an interdisciplinary module covering abroad selection of topics. With a general introduction into sustainability theories itincludes theoretical aspects. Topics like climate change and corporate environmentalmanagement tools relate both to natural and management sciences and urbansociology finally includes social science aspects.

The module Basics in Social Sciences focuses on social science theories of

globalisation. It should sensitise you for third world concerns and specificdevelopment issues. It will also give you an overview on methodological aspects, ifnot yet familiar with social science methodologies. In this module you will meetstudents whose main interests are globalisation issues. The module is also anopportunity to examine your own views of sustainability and how it conforms with orcontradicts development issues.

    THEJIMISDAT LEIPZIG UNIVERSITY 3

Since economic issues are crucial for progress in sustainability - or the lack of it -,the module Basics in Economic Sciences contains an introduction into fundamentaleconomic theories and topics. Furthermore, it provides information on internationalfinance and also on business management exemplified by small and mediumenterprises. This module requires elementary math skills. It is conceptualised as basicinformation, it is neither planned to be normative nor will it offer readymadeinterpretations or recipes for sustainability. Instead, together with the globalisationmodule it further details the boundary conditions from which sustainability changeswill have to start. However, the module depicts partly in terms of case studies - therelevance of economic thinking for sustainability issues.

By the end of the first semester, all of you should be brought up to the same level ofknowledge in core disciplines regardless of your former education. This will prepare you foran extensive engagement in sustainability issues in the following semesters.

Semester 2The second semester is the mobility semester. It is the opportunity to further follow yourinterest in either improving your overview or detailed knowledge. For incoming studentsLeipzig offers a choice of two tracks (Resources Management, Environmental TechnologyManagement). Outgoing students are booked according to their preferences stated in theirapplication and the availability of courses at the partner universities.

Semester 3The content of the third semester is shared by two segments. One part concentrates onfurther subjects in business management: project management, communication, andentrepreneurship including starting a business and developing a business plan. Theentrepreneurship module is an elective and may be exchanged against other modules

offered by the faculty (e.g. material flow management). Further modules offered by otherfaculties of the university may be selected as well as long as they relate to sustainabilityissues. Please consult with the programme coordinator if you want to exercise this choice. The other part consists of the integration module. In this module you shall write a paper ona sustainability issue. The paper should integrate your methodological skills and acquiredknowledge. As such it is an important step to prepare you for your master thesis. For theintegration module you will earn half as much credits as for the master thesis. With regardsto content you may try out and test a scientific argument; or you may lay out themethodological or the empirical bases for your master thesis. You are free to choose apurely scientific or a more practical topic. Also, if you have completed an internship at aprivate sector company or any other institution and you wish to base your integrationmodule paper on that experience by devoting it to a current sustainability problem of thatinstitution, you may do so, provided that there is a professor who can supervise your paper. When thinking about an appropriate topic for your integration module paper it is verytempting to look for ambitious and interesting issues. But please be aware that many veryinteresting sustainability problems are too big and too complex for writing a decent paperabout them in a couple of weeks or even months. If a topic interests you but seems too big

    THEJIMISDAT LEIPZIG UNIVERSITY 4

for one student you may consider teaming up with fellow students. Our institute expresslyencourages such team work, in which each student writes his or her paper on a differentaspect of one larger topic, discussing the subject and the progress regularly with the otherteam members. Team working may be very rewarding for you in terms of broadening yourknowledge and improving your methodological and communication skills (see above:broad or specialised; individual or group work). Moreover, it may be more interesting towork on a larger problem. Professors of the programme in Leipzig offer both, smaller andlarger topics, for integration module papers as well as for master theses. Before actually starting with the work on your integration module paper you will be askedto hand in a research proposal in which you outline your research question and substantiateyour choice of methodology. The integration module will start with a group session in whichevery student presents his or her outline for discussion. During the semester there will beseveral occasions for consultation and discussion of your work. In the final session, at theend of the semester you should be prepared to present your results.

    Semester 4

The fourth semester is devoted to the master thesis. The thesis is the final part of theprogramme. It is your chance to pre-shape your future professional profile, either by furtherspecialisation, or by adding a complementary new aspect to your experience, or else byworking on an issue of general interest to substantiate a more generalist approach. Everymaster thesis is supervised by a professor in Leipzig and a professor or lecturer of one ofthe partner universities. You may ask every professor who contributes to the programme inLeipzig to supervise your thesis. He or she may suggest a topic to you or you may proposea topic yourself. Please be aware that in order to qualify for a master thesis a topic needs acertain academic relevance. For the second supervisor you may have already contacted aprofessor or lecturer of one of the partner universities. Even though, the second supervisorhas to be formally appointed by the programme coordinator in Leipzig. The first andsecond supervisor will expect from you a research proposal very similar to the one youwrote for the integration module. After the first and second supervisor accepted yourproposal you can formally start to work on your thesis. This start is a formal act whichinvolves the student examination office of the faculty (Prfungsamt) formally issuing thetopic to you.

    Additional Learning1.4

If you are interested in taking additional modules at our University you may do so.Additional credits obtained can be certified and documented in your track record. Since the

Master thesis is the last part of the programme you should have completed all such activitiesbefore you start writing your thesis. If you are interested in doing an internship please note that overlap in time with lecturesand seminars should be avoided. The best period for an internship is the time between thesecond and the third semester. The institute cooperates with a number of scientificinstitutions in Leipzig and the region (e.g. UFZ Helmholtz Centre for Environmental

LIVING AND STUDYING IN LEIPZIG 6

Part II. Living and Studying in Leipzig

    2. Living and Studying in Leipzig2

Leipzig is one of the liveliest and most dynamic cities in Germany. With half a millioninhabitants and 30,000 students (thereof almost 3,000 students from outside of Germany)Leipzig is a charming, student-friendly metropolis located in the heart of Germany.

Whether as a musical city, trade fair mecca or city of books Leipzig has been animportant European center for hundreds of years. Famous poets such as Lessing, Klopstock,Gottsched or Goethe moved here. Philosophers such as Leibniz, Nietzsche and Blochinfluence thinking in the city to this day. And Leipzig is especially well known across theworld for its musicality, with a long tradition stretching back to the works of Bach andMendelssohn Bartholdy in particular.

Art, science and culture are still main features of the city, which was founded in 1165, withseveral thousand academics carrying out research in almost 20 non-university researchinstitutions (among them influential environmental research institutes such as the HelmholtzCentre for Environmental Research, UFZ and the German Biomass Research Center, DBFZ)at the University and in six other colleges in the city. The Leipzig School and theBaumwollspinnerei are leaders in the world of art. The St Thomas Boys Choir, theGewandhaus Orchestra, the many museums and a lively theatre scene all characterize thecultural life of the city.

After the Peaceful Revolution Leipzig developed into a booming region of East Germany,

and is now experiencing a renaissance as the logistics and high-tech center in the heart ofEurope. Present-day Leipzig stands out due to its economic dynamism, its many green areaswithin the city and, last but not least, for its lively student population and its free-spiritedcultural scene. Open podium discussions, literary readings and exhibitions characterize thisscene, as do small independent cinemas, myriad concerts, pubs and night clubs.

In addition to being a city of cultural interest, Leipzig University itself, being the secondoldest university in Germany, is also a significant cultural institution which has made itstreasures accessible to the public in its own museums like the gyptisches Museum(Egyptian Museum) or the Antikenmuseum (Museum of Antiquity). The Universittsbibliothek(University's Library), which is over 450 years old, holds also very interesting collections of

    rare manuscripts.
