Welcome back to week four of the Athboy Community School

Health and Wellbeing for Students, Staff and Families connected

with Athboy Community School.

We hope that everyone is keeping well and staying safe. Now that

we have confirmation that the Leaving Certificate and Junior

Certificate will not be able to go ahead as they have in the past

we hope that the news plan have helped alleviate the stress and

anxiety that students, parents and guardians have endured over

the last couple of weeks.

Now also that we are into the last week of a seven week lockdown

hopefully we will be able to keep moving forward and help lift the

restrictions by Staying Safe by Staying Apart. Keep positive and

taking one day at a time. Hopefully the weather will keep shining

for us all.

The Sports Athlete Interviews this week are Kerry Gaelic Football

Captains David Clifford and Anna Galvin

Finally, we really appreciated the feedback we received. Thanks

to Ms. Ni Raghallaigh for the Bris an cód activity. If anyone has

any more ideas, fun games or recipes that they know about which

students, parents and staff might enjoy please send them on to

us. Thank You – you can email [email protected] or

5 things to do at home while social

distancing

1. Support others (if you can)

Smaller businesses, especially those that depend on face to face contact are

inevitably going to struggle during social distancing. If you have the means to do

so, now would be a great time to give back.

If you want to help out your favourite local café, hairdresser or beauty salon

why not can buy a voucher online? That way they can have the money they need

now, and you have something to look forward to once this is over. Win-win.

2. Unearth old photos

Going through old photographs is a great way to spend a day. Pick out your

favourites and create a collage or album so they can be passed around once you

start having visitors over again. If all your photos are digital, have a look for

your favourites and print them out.

3. Create, don't contaminate

Kodaline, The Script, Picture This, and The Coronas are just some of the famous

faces getting behind RTÉ's #CreateDontContaminate campaign to keep

young people's spirits up during social distancing.

Every day over two weeks, RTÉ's team of presenters and influencers will share

a new challenge to create content at home while maintaining social distance.

These will involve making content from anywhere in the house surrounding music,

comedy, dance, art, story-telling, fashion or beauty.

4. Learn a new skill

When this pandemic ends, you can tell your friends that you watched all 236

episodes of Friends (for the tenth time) or you can show off a new party

trick. Learn a dance on TikTok, learn a language on DuoLingo, follow some make-

up tutorials on YouTube.

Alternatively, if you're at home with your parents or someone who knows how to

run a household, ask them to help you work on some practical life skills -

sewing, cooking, doing the laundry without turning everything pink, etc.

Page 5: Welcome back to week four of the Athboy ……Every day over two weeks, RTÉ's team of presenters and influencers will share a new challenge to create content at home while maintaining

5. Write a story or start a journal

This is history, people! Why not document the way the world is changing and

reacting over the coming weeks? Your journal could turn into some great reading

material for your grandchildren when they're asked to write about this in class.

Or, if you want to escape from reality, write a story... you never know what

might come out of it.

Favourite Position? Centre forward

Honour Won Intercounty/ Club?

Kerry: 2 senior Munster titles, 1 U16 All-Ireland. Southern Gaels: 3 senior

titles, have a medal at every age group from U14-minor. 3 O'Connor Cup titles

with UL.

When and where did you first start playing Football?

Derrynane, aged 8

Who was your sporting hero growing up? Dee Corridan

What’s your favourite sport besides Football and why?

To play – basketball; It’s so fast and I loved playing it in

CNS. To watch – tennis; the female tennis players are

such formidable sports people, it’s brilliant to see.

Biggest influence on your football career and why? Fiona

McHale (of Mayo, trained me in UL) She taught us a

different level of teamwork, dedication and discipline.

Anna Galvin

Club: Southern Gaels

Page 20: Welcome back to week four of the Athboy ……Every day over two weeks, RTÉ's team of presenters and influencers will share a new challenge to create content at home while maintaining

Favourite moment in sport to date? Lifting the O’Connor Cup in 2017; we beat

UCC – a team laden with Cork girls that had caused awful heartache over the

years - by one point, it was the sweetest victory!

Favourite Venue? Fitzgerald Stadium

What are your strengths and weaknesses outside

of Football?

Strength – Honest

Weakness – Too honest!

What sportsperson would you most like to meet?

Serena Williams

What are your thoughts on the new rules? In

ladies we have two points for a 45 now; I’m very on

the fence about it but kicking off the ground is

definitely an underused skill in ladies, so I think

it’ll be good to encourage the practice and showcasing of that.

If you could change one thing about the GAA what would it be? Have a better

integration of the LGFA and the GAA, would love to see a more even playing

ground on and off the pitch for the female players

who put in phenomenal levels of time and effort.

Toughest player to mark in training? Any of the backs

could probably take me to the cleaners! But Aishling

O’Connell is a nightmare to try shake off

Your dream 7 a side Football team – 1 GK 2 backs 2

midfielders 2 forwards

Favourite Music? Fleetwood Mac

Favourite Drink? Tea

Favourite Food? Fajitas

Favourite Holiday Destination? Would love a trip back to Australia (probably

chancing my arm calling that a holiday destination!)

Advice for young players? Control the controllables; no

matter what you can always control your own work rate and

attitude, these need to become non-negotiable. There will

always be days that don’t go your way, that’s just the joys of

sport but how you react to the bad days is what makes a

great player – you win, or you learn. And be gracious in

defeat, and victory for that matter.

How does it feel to captain the Kerry Senior Ladies Team?

It’s a huge honour and I feel very privileged to be a captain

of such a brilliant group of players. I’m so lucky in that our

management are so passionate and supportive and the girls

had been and still are so driven so that makes my job very easy. Then once we

step on the pitch, I’m just another player, and need to play my part for the

team, so focus turns to that.

Lastly – best moment of your time in Colaiste Na Sceilge?

We had a couple of trips away for basketball tournaments that’ll always stand

out, the bus and train journeys and getting to stay overnight was always great

craic.

Cognitive challenges for the whole family Provided by Active Kingdom

From JT Deenihan, Director, Active Kingdom

An important factor of our overall health and wellbeing is our mental and cognitive wellness. At Active Kingdom we aim to develop children’s holistic development, not only through physical activity, but also through cognitive and social development opportunities. So over the next few weeks we are providing

details of a number of our team-building and cognitive challenges that are suitable for the whole family.

Towers of Hanoi

The puzzle was invented by a French mathematician in 1883. There is a myth that it originated in an Indian temple, which contains a large room with 3 posts and by golden disks and according to the legend the

world would end when all discs have been moved in accordance with the rules of the game. Don’t worry however, even if the legend was true, and the discs were moved correctly in the least amount of moves

then it would take roughly 585 billion years to complete!

Aim of the game: You need to reposition the discs onto pole C so they are in the same order as the picture Rules of the game: There are a 2 rules to this game; (1) you can only move one piece at a time, (2) you cannot put a larger piece on a smaller piece How to play: Cut out the discs below (or use any objects of increasing size). Start with three pieces, and as you get the hang of it you can add a 4th then 5th disc. The minimum number of moves it take to complete the puzzle are; 3 Discs = 7 Moves, 4 Discs = 15 Moves, and 5 Discs = 31 Moves. See how few moves you and your family can complete it in!
