Gelt Program The P.O. is pleased to once again introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families and we have made it much easier (look for upcoming email with details on how to register). Faculty and staff can also buy Gelt that will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway, and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Sheri Sandrof at [email protected]
or call her at 847.324.3723.
Community News
We welcome back the Class of 2013 from their January
adventures around the world. In addition to the inspired,
introspective, slightly sniffly veterans of the Senior Israel
Experience, we are delighted to welcome back our seven
Senior Interns from their projects in the Chicagoland
area. Eryn Minkow has returned highly elated from her
stint at FEMA, where she investigated how to
make emergency shelters and disaster recovery
efforts more accessible to citizens with disabilities.
Also making room for all of God's handiwork, Alana Stoehr
planned programs for special-needs students at
Congregation Beth Shalom. "I learned so much about how
to interact productively with people with different
psychological disorders," Alana reports. "You have to be
really careful with
your word choice in
order to connect to
them." (Alana also
enjoyed the chance
to work with her
dad, Cantor Steve
Stoehr!) Lady Tigers
teammate Caroline
Dreifuss worked at
Northwest
Community
Hospital. "I was amazed by how many different doctors it
took for one surgery," Caroline explained, "Yet, each doctor
or nurse plays a vital role because each has mastered a
specific task."
Fellow Tiger Gabe Gavrielov is continuing his stint as the
coach of a third-grade basketball. Gabe was surprised at
first by how much his little guys really need him, but has
done his best to come through for them and be the man
they can look up to. Coach Gavrielov is the only teen coach
in the league, but he knows how to run a team as well as
the rest of his competitors. "What am I proudest of? The
fact that we're winning games!" the senior grins.
Tu B'Shevat Seder
On Tuesday Ms. Gleicher-
Bloom's sophomore
Talmud class celebrated
Tu B'Shevat with a Tu
B'shevat seder. Each
chevruta pair presented
one of the four unique
cups for the seder,
and Events
Limmud Chicago! Saturday, February 16 6:45 p.m. Join us for laughter, beats, and dancing at the UIC Student Center East to celebrate the opening of Limmud Chicago 2013.
Joel Chasnoff will perform his new piece, G.I. Joel: A 24-year-old Stand-up Comic from Chicago Gets Drafted into the Israeli Army. Watch "A Life in Stills" sponsored by the Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema. And afterwards, dance the night away with Biblegum pop stars Stereo Sinai. Sunday, February 17 9:00 a.m.
You'll be able to choose from over 80 sessions throughout the day. Limmud Chicago 2013 is centered around two themes: Jewish Love and Jews who made Chicago; there are plenty of sessions beyond these themes, too. See the lineup here! Lunch is included along with snacks; dietary laws observed. Check out
leading the class in a blessing over the grape
juice, describing the fruit they brought to the seder, and
directing a text study. The fruits
enjoyed at the seder were grapes,
tomatoes, dates, pomegranates,
spices, and LOTS of grape juice.
Sophomore Jacob Erlichman reports,
"Overall this experience fostered a
greater understanding of Tu B'shevat
for our class, because we learned the essence of Tu B'shevat both spiritually and physically."
Cell Phones for Shalva
Got any old cell phones sitting around the
house? Do you need a way to get rid of
your cell phones? Well, bring them into
the office and put them in the Cell Phone Drop Box. By
doing so, you will be supporting YPI's chosen organization:
Shalva. All phones will be recycled. Come and drop off those old cell phones in the office!
YPI and Project Clothesline
This year, our Youth Philanthropy Institute has chosen to
dedicate their efforts to Shalva, an organization that deals
with victims of sexual and domestic abuse. In an effort to
heighten our awareness of this topic, next Wednesday we
are bringing the National Clothesline Project to CJHS. This
national project is brought to us through RESPONSE. The
Clothesline Project is a visual, interactive presentation
honoring survivors and remembering those who have died
as a result of domestic/sexual violence. A clothesline is
hung with multi-colored t-shirts that have been created and
decorated by survivors or in memory of individuals who
have been abused. After the program, students who wish to add a t-shirt to the collection may do so.
Israeli Elections
Election results are in from Hebrew VIII! Our results
represented a wide array of parties, but no one predicted
the smashing succes of Yair Lapid and the Yesh Atid ("There
Is a Future") party. Now, let's see what the bright future
brings!

Auditions
"Once Upon a Mattress" In this hilarious tweaking of the fairy tale, "The Princess and the Pea", Queen Aggravain has ruled that no one may marry until her son, Prince Dauntless does. However, she has managed to sabotage every princess that comes along. A member of the court, Prince Harry, wants to marry his love, Lady Larken, so he finds Princess Winnifred ("Fred" to her friends) to wed the Queen's son. The queen is horrified and immediately begins to scheme, but Winnifred, with some help from Sir Harry, the King, and the Jester, isn't going to be quite so easy to get rid of. Audition Dates and Times: Feb 11, 12 | 4:30-7:00 p.m. To reserve your audition time, contact [email protected] or call

This Week in Sports
Join the Tiger
Club
The varsity Tigers basketball team triumphed over the
Skokie Yeshiva and was beaten in turn by Providence St.
Mel; Avidan Halivni had 15 points and Josh Newlander
had 8 rebounds, while his
brother Jake Newlander had
15 points and 9 rebounds in
Tuesday's game. The JV team
also racked up a win against
Yeshiva and a loss to St. Mel
on Monday and Tuesday.
Wednesday was an unqualified
triumph for both the men's
teams, as the varsity beat
Northtown Academy 70-51,
thanks to Jake Newlander's
23 points, 8 rebounds, and 9
assists. The varsity Tigers are now 17-3 (5-1 in the Chicago
Prep Conference). The sophomore team also
defeated Northtown 52-46 to move to 2-5 in the Chicago
Prep Conference.
The Lady Tigers are deep in their tournament season. They
lost to Christ the King on Monday in the Chicago Prep
Conference quarterfinals, and they play North Shore
Country Day (let's see if we can avenge that last loss-- 2
points right at the buzzer!) in the Class 1A IHSA Regional
Tournament next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., right here at
CJHS. Remember last time the Tigers went to the
regionals... come out and see if we can do it again!
Once we (hopefully) advance
by beating this team, we will
play in the regional final
against the winner of the Ida
Crown vs. Roycemore game.
The regional
championship
will be next
Thursday at
7:30. This
game would
be the
regional
championship at the Caplan gym and
possibly the first ever women's basketball
regional championship --or the first time
CJHS women's basketball has beaten the
Lady Aces! Stay tuned next week for
victory updates!
Psst! One of next week's games might just be SENIOR
NIGHT for the Lady Tigers! Come see off the incredible
Caroline Dreifuss, Shelly Dekalo, and Alana Stoehr with
a real Tiger's "blue-out" to show those hordes of Ida Crown
fans that we mean businses!
The 39 members of this
year's Ten-Pin Tigers are
concluding the bowling
season on Tuesday,
February 5 with the annual
CJHS Invitational. Students,
parents, and staff are invited
to Brunswick Zone in
Deerfield to come bowl with
our champions! The bowlers
leave school at 3:30 p.m and
finish at 5:15 p.m., so come
on out and hit the lanes!
Alumni Trivia
Auditions are in full swing for the CJHS Spring Musical, and
the cast list will be announced soon! In the meantime,
which one of the Miller twins played the leading role in
CJHS' iconic production of Grease! and which yeshiva has he
just returned from? And for extra points, where is his
brother the political scientist?
CJHS Drives
DRIVES has teamed up with the Chesed
Club to run a great collection for Orphans of
the Storm, an animal shelter in Deerfield.
Orphans of the Storm is a no-kill shelter that
cares for and gives refuge to stray,
abandoned, abused, or neglected dogs and cats. During the
month of February, we will be collecting blankets, towels,
newspapers, baking soda, toys , treats, brushes, and combs

STAND UPdate
STAND secretary Yadid Licht reports, "This week, John
Kerry was confirmed as the new secretary of state. Many
human rights organizations are welcoming his confirmation,
as Kerry is known as an outspoken advocate for human
rights. Kerry has extensive knowledge on the issue in the
Sudans, Congo, and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and
has been committed to keeping the conflicts near the top
among the government's foreign policy priorities. He
promises to work to end the humanitarian crisis in Sudan,
and capture the infamous Joseph Kony, leader of the LRA
rebel group."

Congo can be found here.

A Taste of Torah: Yitro
"Lo tachmod" (do not covet), the tenth commandment of the Decalogue, is my favorite of the whole lot. I'm so fascinated by it because of its
complexity: this is a commandment connected to our thoughts. Specifically we are commanded not to think about things. This is a tough order! For example -- don't think about an elephant right now. Exactly.
Yet there are also huge theological stakes here, as well - is this mitzvah psychologically possible? And if it isn't, am I being set up to fail? I am convinced that trying to force
ideas away by sheer will is not psychologically possible. However, being aware of what we crave but cannot have stands at the center of the Biblical worldview for how humans should position
themselves in relationship to their fellow humans, the world and God.
Nachmanides wrote the following letter to his son and instructed him to read it once a week: "Speak your words calmly, to every person and at all times. By doing
this you will be rescued from anger, which is an attribute of evil which leads humanity to sin... And when you are freed from the anger, the attribute of humility will rise on your heart, which is
the highest positive attribute of all of the attributes." Nachmanides
explains that by being mindful of both our thoughts and words, we examine ourselves. While pushing thoughts out of our minds may not be possible, perhaps the way to be punctilious in the mitzvah of Lo Tachmod is to live the principle of Ben Zoma, stated in Pirkei Avot: Eizehu Chacham, HaSameach b'Chelko. Who is happy? The one that is comfortable with her portion.
May we strive to live a life free of coveting by being more fully comfortable with our own identities. --Rav Beit Sefer Zach Silver
