REVIEW…• Temperature
• A measure of the average kinetic energy of the individual particles in matter• Fahrenheit Scale
• 0°• Brine (seawater) Freezes
• 32°• Water Freezes
• 212°• Water Boils
• Celsius Scale• 0°
• Water Freezes• 100°
• Water Boils• Kelvin Scale
• 0°• Matter stops moving!
MATH TIME!!!• Conversions between Temperature Scales:• °C = (°F – 32)• °F = °C + 32• K = °C + 273
THERMAL ENERGY• Thermal Energy
• Total energy of all the particles in an object.• Depends on:
• Number of particles in the object• Temperature of the object• Arrangement of the object’s particles• (learn more in section 3)
• Which has more Thermal Energy?• .5 liter of hot chocolate at 75° C• .25 liter of hot chocolate at 75° C
BRING ON THE HEAT!• When we talk about heat we may mention that an
object contains heat, but in fact it contains Thermal Energy.• So what is heat?
• Why does an ice cube melt in your hand?• Heat
• Thermal Energy moving from a warmer object to a cooler object.
GETTING SPECIFIC…• Imagine the beach in early summer…
• Run across the sand… OUCH!!! Feels hot!!!• Run into the water… BRRR!!! Feels cold!!!
• What is going on here?• Heat an object = Temperature rises
• BUT!!! Objects do not heat at the same rate.• Depends on the chemical makeup of the object.
GETTING SPECIFIC…• Scientist defined a quantity to measure relationship
between Heat and Temperature Change.• Specific Heat
• Raise the Temperature of 1 kilogram of a material by 1 Kelvin• Joules per Kilogram-Kelvin
NEED SOME HEAT…
SPECIFIC HEAT…A material with a high specific heat can absorb a great deal of thermal energy without a great change in temperature.
FINAL MATH…• Change in energy…
How much heat is required to raise the temperature of 5kg of water by 10K?
COMPARE AND CONTRAST
CLOSING…• What is the difference between Thermal Energy and
Temperature?
• What is Heat?
• Which requires more Heat to change Temperature… the sand, or the water at the beach?
