Being a registered parishion-er makes things easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, funerals, affidavits and when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor. New Tax Incentives for Charitable Giving The Coronavirus Relief Law expands the charitable giving deduction to taxpayers who do not itemize. This above-the-line deduction is capped at $300 per person/$600 per couple for donations to qualified charitable organizations such as Assumption Parish.

The law also lifts the cap on annual contributions for those who itemize, from 60% of adjusted gross income to 100%. These giving incentives apply to 2020 contribu-tions and would be claimed in 2021 when completing your 2020 tax forms.

We need your support… You have been shown that you are truly a giving and car-ing community with your continuing support of your parish

during this time of crisis. Thank you!

Although the church and office remain closed, our em-ployees continue working remotely to keep our daily op-erations moving forward. Unfortunately, all the rest of the parish expenses also continue, and those must be paid from our regular collections which have decreased significantly since our church doors closed for our regu-lar Masses. However, our faith sharing continues and we now have livestream Masses and new ways of com-municating and gathering.

Please continue your generosity to the parish either online through Faith Direct, online banking, through the regular mail, or dropping off your envelopes through the rectory mail slot. We greatly appreciate it.

Dear Parishioners,

As you enter the “crying room” or the former Chapel in the church, you will notice four stained glass windows. All four windows express some aspect of our Blessed Mother. As you look at those windows from left to right you will notice the following references to Mary from the prayer “The Divine Praises.”

“Blessed Be the Great Mother of God, Mary Most Holy.” (Mother of God) “Blessed Be her Holy and Immaculate Conception.” (Immaculate Conception)

“Blessed Be her Glorious Assumption.” (Assumption) “Blessed Be the Name of Mary, Virgin and Mother.” (Virgin and Mother)

In this month of May, also known as the month of Mary, we will reflect on and discuss each of these titles. It is going to be one title per week. We will continue every Friday in May. There will be between 45 minutes to an hour discussion on the topic and we will conclude with the Rosary.

Here are the dates for the presentation and discussion.

Friday, May 22, 2020 at 7 pm, VIRGIN AND MOTHER, followed by the Mystery of Light Friday, May 29, 2020 at 7 pm, GLORIOUS ASSUMPTION followed by the Glorious Mystery.

We will, in union with the whole Church, ask Mary for her intercession with this Pandemic.

Here is the Zoom information for all four meetings.

DID YOU KNOW? Protect young people from cyberbullying Cyberbullying can happen at any time, on any online platform. It can take many forms – cruel direct messages, threatening emails, mean texts, shared photos, and more. Victims of cyber-bullying often suffer from anxiety and depression, and their self-esteem can be diminished. They may be reluctant to talk about bullying, so parents need to be on top of all their children’s online activities. Asking questions and getting information about popular apps and sites will help, too. For more information, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Cyber-Bullying: Protecting Young People from Technol-ogy Dangers” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

The peace the world gives isolates us from others. It lulls us to sleep, and is temporary and sterile. The peace the Lord gives is last-ing, fruitful, contagious. It makes us go out to create community. It is filled with hope be-cause it looks toward Heaven. 5/11

Sixth Sunday of Easter Page Five

Pope Francis’s Prayer to Mary During the Coronavirus Pandemic

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus' pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

AMEN

You can still request Mass Intentions, please call or email the Rectory. For now, we will celebrate all Mass inten-tions on Sundays at 10:00AM.

School News

Message From Paul M. Escala Superintendent of Catholic Schools

After recent discussions with public health officials in the three counties we serve, public and private K-12 cam-puses will not be included in the initial stages of sector reopening. As a result, distance learning will continue through the end of the school year.

As parents and educators, there is nothing we want more than for our students to celebrate the culmination of the school year together, particularly for our graduates. Though the moment may not afford us the opportunity to physically come together, we are all committed to honor-ing our students now and in-person when gatherings are permitted.

Looking forward, we are making plans to start the school year smart. The resumption of instruction in the fall will proceed as scheduled and according to each school’s specific calendar. Though we cannot deter-mine what the public health conditions will look like for schools in August, our goal is to return to in-person in-struction. We’ve been advised by public health officials to prepare for new protocols and modifications to our cam-pus environment. We’ve also been told that we should anticipate the possibility of a resumption of distance learning if Safer at Home orders are reinstated. We will be prepared for both. …………………………………………...

There is still time to apply for the next school year! Appli-cations are now available online.

For more information email us at: [email protected]

Faith Direct has released a new feature for Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

eGivers this month!

Previously, anyone who was using a bank account for their regular giving and wanted to make a live one-time payment, or give to a collection outside of the bi-monthly debit schedule, needed to add a credit card to their ac-count in order to do so.

Now, because of changes to our system and the more flexible options offered by our payment processing part-ner, current online givers have the option to make these live one-time gifts directly from their bank accounts!

You may sign up by clicking on the button on our website or go directly to https://membership.faithdirect.net/CA1053

News From the Archbishop In a webinar on May 13, the Archbishop recognized that while we long to return to our churches, it is important to protect ourselves and others by continuing to stay home. The Archdiocese is planning for various stages of open-ing as recommended by the government.

In light of the continuing closures, Archbishop Gomez has continued the dispensation of attending Mass until further notice.

Again We Say: "A Better Day… A Brighter Future"

The Vincentian vocation…

We love broken people. We seek them out. They are tattered and unworthy, di-sheveled and confused. They may be desperate and frightened, or frantically lay-ing a con at our feet. They are mostly hurt, or sick, or mentally ill, or dual diag-nosed - both mentally ill and suffering from addictions.

They might be laid-off and need assistance with rent. Maybe we can help them avoid an eviction? We might

turn the lights back on and the refrigerator, too. We have done these things at Christmas for some.

They need clothes. They need food. They need sleeping bags, and mats, and plastic tarps to keep out the wind and rain. They need soap, and shampoo, and clippers, and combs. Some first aid would often help. Don't forget water.

But all of this is the "temporal." What about the "spiritual?" Broken people need our insight regarding navigating the system. They need our prayers: before, during, and after our meetings with them. They need mentors. They need our friendship.

Even a brief encounter is an opportunity to affirm the dig-nity of a person in need. Critics and cynics might say, “but what have you accomplished, other than wasting your time and money?" The detractors of our vocation miss the point. Affirming dignity does not instantly change one's life; it is a recognition of what every human being needs and lives for… it says, "we include you." Affirming dignity is about being inclusive. Inclusiveness is the invitation from God to join the long march back to normalcy.

See this woman? You know her. She's a mother… a neighbor… a friend. She's a worker… an immigrant… a taxpayer. She's homeless now. God invites and wel-comes everyone to His table. Doesn't this woman deserve a second chance?

"The Vincentians… much to share."

Eternally, and without compromise… Robert Wyatt President If you would like to know more about joining our Confer-ence, call the hotline and someone can talk to you on the phone or meet with you. Or if you know someone who needs assistance please call our hotline: (626) 657-0836.

We are still collecting food for Friends in Deed and taking donations.

May ~ Mary’s Month Marian Apparitions

Marian apparitions are moments when the Blessed Virgin Mary appears to us here on earth, letting us know that her prayers for us are being offered to God. It also reaf-

firms the fact that the Blessed Mother always points to her son. In many of these apparitions she reminds us to do the will of Jesus Christ.

But how does an apparition get approved as being worthy of belief? Back in 1978, the Holy See released “Norms Regarding the Manner of Proceeding in the Discernment of Presumed Apparitions or Revelations,” which detailed how the Church responds to claims of Marian apparitions. As many Christians know, all public revelation ceased with the death of the last apostle, St. John the Evangelist. Since that time, the Holy Spirit has continued to guide the Church into all truth. While there are no more public reve-lations, we as Catholics still have room to grow in our understanding of God’s revelation to the world.

So if Revelation is already complete, where do “private” revelations, such as Marian apparitions fall in?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church provides us with valuable insight:

“Throughout the ages, there have been so-called ‘private’ revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however, to the deposit of faith. It is not their role to improve or com-plete Christ’s definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history. Guided by the Magisterium of the Church, the sensus fidelium knows how to discern and welcome in these revelations whatev-er constitutes an authentic call of Christ or His saints to the Church.

“Christian faith cannot accept ‘revelations’ that claim to surpass or correct the Revelation of which Christ is the fulfillment…” (CCC 67)

In apparitions that are deemed as worthy of belief, the Church confirms that there is nothing contradictory to the Faith in the messages that have emerged from the appa-ritions, that the visions are credible, and that the Blessed Virgin Mary can be venerated under that specific title at-tributed to her. In no way must any Catholic be compelled to venerate Our Lady under such titles. Geographic titles such as Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Fatima, and Our Lady of Lourdes refer to the place of the apparition.
