  • RIT History RIT is privately endowed, coeducational university with nine colleges and institutes emphasizing career education and experiential learning. 1829 RIT traces its roots back to 1829, as the Rochester Athenaeum, a reading society. 1891 The Athenaeum merged with the Rochester Mechanics Institute (founded 1885) in 1891. 1940s Renamed the Rochester Institute of Technology in the 1940s. 1966 RIT chosen for site of National Technical Institute for the Deaf 1968 RIT moves to Henrietta campus
