•London is the capital city of The United Kingdom. The first inhabitants were the Romans

Big Ben and House of Parliament

The Palace of Westminster, known also as the Houses of Parliamentor just Westminster,

is where the two Houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (the House of Lords

and the House of Commons) meet. It is the place where British laws are debated and

passed. The first English Parliament met in 1275. Most of the medieval palace was

destroyed in a fire in 1834 and it was rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style. During the

parliamentary year the British flag is flown on top of the 98 meter high tower.

Big Ben: many people think that Big Ben is the name of the clock tower at the north

end of the Palace of Westminster in London. Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell

inside the clock.

The tower is officially known as the Elizabeth Tower or "Clock Tower". It was

completed in 1858.

The tower has become one of the most important symbols of the United Kingdom and

is often shown in the films set in London.

Westminster Abbey

The Westminster Abbey is located in London near the Houses of Parliament. The Abbey is famous for its beautiful architecture and for the many royal ceremonies that took place there. Kings and Queens of England were crowned here since William the Conqueror in 1066. Also, many royal marriages, like that of William and Kate, and funerals, such as that of Princess Diana were celebrated in the church. There have been at least 16 royal weddings at the abbey since 1100.

Britain Express: the Tower of London

The first part of the Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror in 1078, as

his royal residence and defence system, in the early 1080s but what we now call the

Tower is actually a collection of several different buildings. The Tower of London

has been used for many things since it was first built. Hundreds of years ago it was

most famous as a prison where some prisoners were even tortured or killed! Now it

is just as famous as the home of the crown jewels which have been kept there since

the year 1303The most famous people to be locked up in the Tower of London were

Queen Elizabeth I and Guy Fawkes.

Did you know? The full name of the Tower of London is actually Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress The tower is guarded by special wards called the Beefeaters. They still wear the traditional ancient uniform. Six black ravens live in the

St Paul’s Cathedral

Saint Paul's Cathedral is located in the middle of the City of London. It is the Mother Church of the Anglican Church. St. Paul's Cathedrals was built by Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of 1666 that

destroyed much of London.

The Cathedral includes a large central dome and two bell towers on the west: the

north tower contains 13 bells and the south contains 4 ;

It was inspired by St Peter's Basilica in Rome. it also has a crypt with over 200

memorials.

London Eye

The London Eye is a giant panorama wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in

London. It is also known as the Millennium Wheel, because it was built to celebrate

the beginning of the new millennium but has been granted permission to stay up for

at least 25 years.

The entire structure is 135 metres tall and the wheel has a diameter of 120 metres. It is

currently Europe's tallest Ferris wheel, the most popular paid tourist attraction in the
