Lets begin by exploring the cities of New Zealand…

During our last lesson we learnt that a city meant you are surrounded by lots of buildings, lots of cars and lots of people
Image: http://www.peter-thomson.co.uk/new_zealand/auckland.html
The most important part of a city however is…
Image: http://www.flickr.com/groups/panasonicfz50/discuss/72157620461474705/ People
People are an important part of the city because they help make decisions on how the city will look and how people will live and work in a city …
This sometimes involves everyone having to vote on what is more important
Sometimes there are many things that need to be done to help a city grow…
If we were asked to choose which is more important for the city – making it look good or making sure all people have warm houses, which would you choose?
Maybe a class vote will help make a final decision.
People are very important in today’s cities even the city you live in
Many years ago a city could not be named a ‘city’ unless there were enough people in the area…

Before 1989 in New Zealand, a place could not be called a ‘city’ until they had more than 20,000 people living in the area!
Manukau is south of Auckland and was officially recognised as a city in 1965.
Lets explore other cities of New Zealand…

As we have seen cities in New Zealand have changed a lot over time…
So what have we learnt so far?
• People are important in helping a city grow
• Before 1989 a place needed to have more than 20,000 people before it was recognised as a city
• Sometimes we have to vote on what is important for the people of a city
• From the 5 oldest cities in New Zealand, 3 are in the South Island and 2 are in the North Island
