ART FORMS OF KERALA

The major art forms of Kerala are

Kadhakali, Koothu, Koodiyattam,

Yekshaganam and Kalamezhuthu… These art

forms influence the Kerala culture very much.

KADHAKALI

Kadhakali is one of the

very ancient art form of Kerala. It

is an art form in which the actors

do not speak but instead they use

gestures and facial expression to

convey the meaning of the song

recited by singers in the

background

Kadhakali based

on makeup and certain

other factors the characters

are………

• Pacha

• Kathi

• Thadi

• Minukku

KOOTHU

Koothu is perfomed in

Koothambalams constructed

within Precints of

tembles.Chakyarkoothu is a

monoact par Excellence in

which a single actor,the

Chakyar acts the role of all the

characters with gestures suited

to each characters.

KOODIYATTAM

Koodiyattam has

more than one actor on the

stage at the same time.The

chakyar Performs the role of

the male charater and Nangiar

takes the role of the female

charater.Koodiyattam is also

Performed in the

Koothambalam

YAKSHAGANAM

Yakshaganam is adance

drama which is popular in and

around Kasargod.Yakshaganam is

similar to Kathakali because like

in Kathakali it gives Promience

to acting.It also has certain

resemblance to art forms like

Chakyarkoothu and Koodiyattam.

KALAMEZHUTHU

Kalamezhuthu is a

special kind of Pictorial art form

of Kerala.Figures of deities are

drawn on the floor with

coloured powders made of

natural ingredients .Seated near

this,devotees of the deity sing

hyms of praise

characol,Powder,rice,turmeric,g

reen leaves and quick lime are

used in Kalamezhuthu.
