CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL (CSA) UPDATE AS OF 07/17/18

TIME GOES SO FAST! It’s already been six months since we kicked off our 2018 CSA Campaign. Thank you to all of you who have responded with your pledge already. If you haven’t, please prayerfully consider a pledge to this worthwhile campaign. Remember, all funds in excess of our CSA Goal will go into our Building Fund. Since we have exceeded our Goal for this year, everything pledged on this campaign going forward goes directly to that Fund. If you need a new pledge form, please call Denise in the office at 775-323-6894 or visit the CSA website www.catholicreno.org.

DIOCESAN CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE AS OF 07/17/18

Today, Tomorrow, Together…A campaign that will help the Diocese of Reno secure its future and at the same time, help Our Lady of the Snows. Please consider making a gift to the TTT Campaign. We all have the ability to spread those pledge payments over 2-3 years, to ease any strain on our budgets. While we have exceeded the pledge goal for Our Lady of the Snows, we can continue to help the diocese reach its goal. The parish will receive 50% of the campaign funds received over our goal; those funds have been allocated to our Building Fund. Call Denise in the parish office to get a pledge card or signup online at www.catholicreno.org.

.REST IN THE LORD For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out “two by two” to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile” (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Ask the Lord to renew you in body, mind, and spirit for the arduous work of discipleship. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Each Christian needs half an hour of prayer each day,

except when we are busy; then we need an hour.

LISTENING ASSISTANCE We have been successful in locating a good Assisted Listening System. If you’re interested in trying it out, please talk to one of the ushers at your

mass. You'll be given a pocket pack, headphones, and basic instructions. For more information, you are welcome to talk to our Music Director, Joseph DeRosa.

Currently we only have 10 devices available, so they need to be checked out before mass and returned immediately after mass. For parishioners who wish to avoid checking them out, devices may be purchased through us, for about $48. The ushers can give you information about where to buy them.

We are excited to bring this capability to our parishioners. Please step up and utilize it so that it is easier for you to hear the liturgies.

For those who have recently gone to God: Marilyn Drendel, beloved wife of John and mother of sons John and Thomas and of daughters Mary Heiśe,

and Ann Haas.

FR. TONY’S RETIREMENT PARTY AT THE PEPPERMILL

We are currently taking orders for copies of the DVD from the Tribute to Fr. Tony held at the Peppermill on

June 15. If you would like one, please contact the parish office to place your pre-paid order. The cost is $10 each. Please either drop by the office or mail in your money, and we will put your name on the list. This is a great way to preserve the memories, or for those who were unable to attend, to get a taste of what the event was like.

SHOEBOX REQUEST

We would like to collect 50 shoe-boxes (lids not necessary) for next year’s Vacation Bible School. They will be great places to collect

the children’s artwork and crafts. If you have a shoebox to donate, please put it in the ‘Food for Life’ section of the church on July 15, 22, or 29. Please do not put any shoeboxes there after July 29, because that space will then revert back to the place where food is collected for the needy. Thank you!

YOUTH HOUSE NEEDS

Are you considering trading out your lightly used sofa for a new one? Do you have large good quality bean bag chairs you don’t want anymore?

Please consider donating them to Our Lady of the Snows Youth House. We’re just finishing up a pro-ject to freshen up the space in which our youth meet. The rooms are relatively small, so the pieces would need to be measured to be sure they would fit.

Please contact Susann Boley at [email protected] or at (775) 323-6894 ext. 501. Thank you!

DEPRESSION AND BIPOLAR SUPPORT ALLIANCE (DBSA) Individuals with a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of depression or bipolar disorder are invited to attend our next DBSA meeting on Tuesday, July 24, at 7:00 p.m. in the par ish center . Fr iends and family members are likewise invited. DBSA is a non-denominational and secular organization. The parish center is located at 1200 S. Arlington. We will meet weekly on Tuesdays. AROUND THE DIOCESE

BECOME A HOME HOST

Bring the world to your home! The Northern Nevada International Center at UNR is seeking for caring, 12-day homes for a group of Algerian high schoolers coming to Reno August 7-19.

The Algerian students will be in Reno participating in a leadership and civic engagement program and will be engaging in volunteering, volunteer project planning, and cultural activities while they are in our community. The students can be dropped off and picked up at the same location and time on the UNR campus every program day (Monday-Friday 8:00-5:00) and from there will be provided transportation to their daily visits and workshops.

Students are provided with lunch daily. Hosts provide breakfast and some dinners. Families can host 1-2 students in a shared (with an American sibling or program participant of the same gender) or private bedroom. Please help us welcome an international student to our community!

Contact Stacy Kinion at [email protected] or 775.686.8523 for further details or to participate.

"Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being’s entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or sovereign… you must weep that your own government, at present, seems blind to this truth."

Mission Statement We, the Body of Christ at Our Lady of the Snows, are a community of disciples on a journey of faith. To live the gospel message as

listeners, learners, and leaders, we will: Enrich our liturgies as the foundation for greater spirituality; nurture an awareness of Christ in one another—see and reach out to those who long for mercy, healing, and justice; and facilitate the sharing of our

Catholic legacy in the diverse settings of our lives.

Our diocese is privileged to have been chosen by the University of Dallas

to serve as one of their Catholic Biblical School sites in the coming year.

The first two years of the CBS program focus on the biblical books that form the foundation of both the Old and New Testaments. Years Three and Four of the program cover the remaining books of the bible, emphasizing their contexts and principle themes. While starting at the beginning of the four-year cycle is encouraged, a student can join the program at any point.”
