The SAI-Active Universal range is the result of years of
experience that Weidmüller has made with distributors for
industry. The fieldbus systems supported are PROFIBUS-DP,
DeviceNet™ and CANopen.
The housing has been tailor made to meet the demands of
industry. That is why it is resistant to aggressive cleaning
agents, vibration, shocks and temperature as well as being
sealed against the ingress of water and dust.
One module – three Ethernet dialects
The new SAI Active Universal modules for Industrial Ethernet
have three Ethernet dialects integrated. The module selects
PROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP by means of
automatic port recognition functionality.

Overview
Connection technology
The concept behind the new distributors champions rapid and
simple installation in harsh environments. Commercially avail-
able, standardised M8 and M12 connectors form the back-
bone of the connection technology. Robust threaded rings
made of metal as well as standard assignments ensure safety
and fewer mistakes during the wiring process.
Two M12 connections are available respectively for the field-
bus. Thus, there is no need for an external T-piece – and the
modules can easily be connected up to one another. As the
standards specify, B-coding is used for PROFIBUS-DP and
A-coding for DeviceNet™ und CANopen. Industrial Ethernet is
wired point-to-point from a switch. The modules are equipped
with a D-coded M12 connector.
User-friendly connection of the functional earth is achieved by
means of a metal clip in the mounting hole. A secure contact is
created automatically when screwed to an earthed base made
of metal. Otherwise, the screw point offers sufficient space for
a round cable lug, via which a cable can be connected for
dissipation purposes.
Two central mounting holes ensure simple and reliable
mounting.
Status indication
I/O statuses are indicated by means of elegant light guides
in the form of arrowheads. These point in the direction of
the markings and connectors.
The light also illuminates the corresponding marker, which
allows it to be quickly and clearly read under working
conditions.
In addition, the power supplies, group diagnostic messages
and fieldbus statuses are indicated via seven status
indicators.

The electronics
Diagnosis
Each I/O channel is constantly scanned for errors. If an error is
detected, the colour of the LED changes from yellow to red
and a message is transmitted via the fieldbus. As well as
individual channel diagnostics, a module diagnosis is also
available for overvoltages, short-circuits and the fieldbus.
Outputs
The outputs are short-circuit proof as well as being protected
against polarity reversal. Two outputs are available for high-
performance actuators that can be operated with max. output
power of 2 A. As well as offering freedom of choice between
16DI through to 8DI/8DO, the 16DI/8DO allows the user to
customise the configuration to suit the application.
Analogue modules
The analogue combi-module is uniquely versatile. The configu-
ration between current and voltage is selected via the configu-
ration software of the master. JACKPAC® offers further inter-
face options. These modules are simply installed between the
distributors and the sensors where they condition signals.
The module offers 4 additional digital inputs.
Power supply
The modules can be supplied with max. 4 different voltages.
In addition to the module voltage, which is also used for the
inputs, three supply terminals are available for the outputs.
The outputs can also be individually switched off in accordance
with application needs. Two jumpers provide the option of
bridging the electrical power supply. Thus enabling 3 output
circuits to be operated separately.
Illuminated configuration area
The configuration area for the module is situated below the
transparent cover. Two rotary switches are available to set the
fieldbus addresses. Thus allowing up to a max. 126 addres-
ses to be set for PROFIBUS-DP. Two jumpers have also been
included on the right-hand side to bridge the electrical power
supplies. Illuminating the configuration area is to date a unique
feature that signalises the module is switched on and
functioning. Moreover, it also allows the rotary switches to be
more easily recognised.

Transparent markers
A marker is available for each I/O channel as well as two
markers for the module as a whole. The markers do not have
to be fitted individually on the I/O side. Marker strips offer the
added advantage of rapid installation. An additional 40-mm
wide marker has been specially adapted to suit the module.
This allows longer texts such as markings with up to
40 characters to be fitted and clearly read without hindrance.
Supplementary products
A Multicard strip is included in the range of supply for marking
the module. In conjunction with Weidmüller’s PrintJet, these
markers are remarkably user-friendly to print.
The new M12 sealing plugs can now be more easily fitted
manually and to the correct torque using our Screwty® tool.
Two additionally integrated slots allow the plug to be fitted with
either a small or large flat bladed screwdriver.
Cables and accessories provide a perfect finish to our
programme of distributors.

SAI products in action
If it is true that Weidmüller belongs to the world-wide leaders
in the field of distributors, then this has a particularly good
reason. In developing SAI distributors Weidmüller’s design
engineers have concentrated on achieving economically
favourable installation concepts. This has led, quite often in
close co-operation with renowned users, to the introduction of
sophisticated products onto the market that lead the way with
regard to functionality and set standards in quality – all over
the world.
Today, modern installation concepts have to be drawn up so
that they save materials, money, time, space and weight from
the very beginning. For that reason, products that make such
concepts possible are of crucial significance.
And it is exactly in this regard that you can trust Weidmüller's
quality, experience and innovative force.
Applications
9
‘Mounted directly’, Weidmüller’s SAI distributors are integrated
into the machine or system. They bring together signals from
the sensors and actuators on the spot. At this point, installa-
tion and service costs can be reduced by utilising pre-
assembled cables and commercially available M8/M12 circular
connectors. Fieldbus interfaces on the other side of the
distributor provide the connection to the controls.
In order to supply the customer with optimum products for
their applications, the new SAI-Active Universal series has
turned to innovative ideas and remained true to proven
standards. Our SAI-Active distributors are at home in factory
automation - in the field. Exactly where the process is in action
– where the sensors and actuators are fitted. These versatile
products support all conventional fieldbus systems as well as
being able to process both analogue and digital signals.

System description PROFIBUS-DP
PROFIBUS
Principle
PROFIBUS-DP is a master–slave system consisting of one
master (usually implemented in the PLC) and up to 31 slaves
per segment. During operation, the master constantly interrog-
ates the slave stations. Several masters can also be integrated
within one network to relay the transmission authorisation
(token passing).
PROFIBUS-DP uses a physical layer based on the RS 485
standard which has performed excellently in industrial applica-
tions.
The system uses a shielded, twisted 2-wire cable and is
extremely resistant to electrical interference. PROFIBUS-DP
is suitable for connecting a large number of I/O points. Up
to 126 addressable subscribers enable the connection of
thousands of analogue and digital I/O points within a network.
Every PROFIBUS-DP module has a so-called GSD file which
contains detailed information about the module (I/O data
volume, possible transmission rates, update status, etc.).
The station GSD file is required in order to configure a station
within the PROFIBUS-DP system.
The GSD files are available on the Weidmüller website at
www.weidmueller.com.
Network structure
The network is constructed as a line structure with an active
bus termination at both ends.
When utilising SAI-Active Universal modules a bus terminator
plug (Order No.: 1784770000) is plugged into the BUS-Out
socket. Ideally, no spur lines should be created; to that end,
the Weidmüller modules have been designed with two
connections for connecting the fieldbus.
Max. 126 nodes can be addressed at all transmission
rates. The maximum extension with 7 repeaters is 9.6 km
(8 x 1.2 km).

1.5 Mbps 200 m 6.6 m 4
12 Mbps 100 m preferably none 4
Maximum system extension
PROFIBUS-DP can accommodate max. 32 devices per
segment. One segment corresponds to a subsection between
two repeaters. If no repeaters are used, the complete network
corresponds to one segment. The following table indicates
the maximum extension options.
Addressing
The address setting for the corresponding station is set
manually by means of two coded rotary switches.
Transmission rate
The transmission rate must be identical throughout the
whole network, and is defined by the master. The baud rate
is compared automatically upon switching on. No adjustments
need to be made at the module.
At 12 Mbps the typical response time is < 1 ms per
1000 I/O points.
The baud rate cannot be changed during operation!

DeviceNetTM
DeviceNetTM
Principle
DeviceNetTM is a fieldbus system from the USA that is being
increasingly employed in Europe and Asia. In terms of the
physical layers 1 and 2 of the ISO 7-layer model, DeviceNetTM
is based on CAN (Controller Area Network).
The ISO application layer (layer 7) in DeviceNetTM makes use
of the so-called “Common Industrial Protocol” (CIP). This is
an open standard which is also used for ControlNetTM and
EtherNet/IP. In the future this will enable permanent communi-
cation between the field level and the Internet.
DeviceNetTM is a multi-master system and its protocol pri-
oritises the data traffic in such a way that I/O signals have
a higher priority than configuration data.
Every DeviceNetTM module has a so-called EDS file (Electronic
Data Sheet), containing an exact description of the module.
All information about I/O and status data required by a master,
e.g. a PLC or IPC, are saved in this file and can be used to
integrate the module step by step into the control program.
The EDS files are available for downloading on the Weidmüller
website at www.weidmueller.com.
Network structure
ISO 11898 prescribes a line structure for the DeviceNetTM
network.
A line structure has a terminating resistor of 120 Ω at each
end. A bus terminator connector (order No. 1784760000) can
be plugged into the “Bus OUT” output socket of the
Weidmüller DeviceNetTM SAI distributors.
Ideally, there should be no stub cables; Weidmüller modules
have two special connections for the fieldbus. The number of
subscribers is limited to 63.
Addressing
Any address from 1 to 63 is possible. The address setting of
the station can be set manually at the device or via the master.
Two coded rotary switches are located underneath the cap,
with separate adjustment of tens and units.
Bus line length, transmission rate

sion rate (baud rate). The following table serves as a guide for

Active
A CAN network is based on a server–
client principle with a serial bus connec-
ting network subscribers having equal
access status. The electrical connection
consists of a 2-wire line with or without
shielding depending on the application.
CANopen was defined as a uniform
protocol for networking the different
CANopen subscribers. The protocol
stipulates the significance of the data
for the corresponding device type (e.g.
I/O modules, drives, shaft encoders,
controls).
This means it is now easy for application
programmers to use all types of
CANopen-compatible components
irrespective of manufacturer.
CANopen subscribers in the same devi-
ce series organise their data in the same
way. The characteristics of these device
classes are summarised in “device
profiles”.
An object directory is defined in
CANopen nodes and describes all devi-
ce parameters. This is used not only for
device description but also as a data
access interface by other CANopen
devices.
Larger, non-time-critical data quantities
are transmitted using “service data
objects” (SDO). In addition, at least
two “process data objects” (PDO) are
available for transmitting process data.
Manufacturer-specific objects and other
functions are described in the manual.
Every CANopen module has a so-called
EDS file (Electronic Data Sheet) contai-
ning an exact description of the module.

PROFINET
PROFINET
Principle
PROFINET is the open automation standard of the PROFIBUS
Users Organisation. The aim is to realise a consistent auto-
mation concept based on Industrial Ethernet that is indepen-
dent of manufacturers.
The PROFINET specification distinguishes between three dif-
ferent forms:
• PROFINET CBA (component-based automation) a superim-
posed networking of installation elements
• PROFINET IO for real-time communication with field devices
• PROFINET IRT for isochronous real-time communication,
e.g. with drives
The Weidmüller SAI modules comply with the PROFINET IO
standard and are approved by the PROFIBUS Users
Organisation. The customary IO view familiar to PROFIBUS-DP
users is employed, with cyclic transmission of the IO data of
field devices to the process image of the PLC.
PROFINET IO describes a device model that is based on the
key features of PROFIBUS-DP and comprises slots and chan-
nels. The characteristics of the field devices are described by
a GSD (General Station Description) on an XML basis.
Network structure
PROFINET installations are based on the specific requirements
for Ethernet networks in an industrial environment. They pro-
vide the device manufacturer with clear specifications for
device interfaces and the cabling required.
Like Standard Ethernet, PROFINET installations are also wired
with a star structure. The star structure is characterised by a
central signal distributor (switch) with individual connections
to all the network’s terminals. A line or tree structure can be
set up with the help of a 3-port switch in the device or in the
proximity of each device.
Weidmüller can supply products for the network infrastructure
– please refer to our Industrial Ethernet catalogue.
Addressing
Address assignment supports two standards:
Discovery and Basic Configuration protocol (DCP) and
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
• DCP enables assignment of IP parameters with manufac-
turer-specific configuration/programming tools or in pan-
system engineering.
• DHCP specifies the Ethernet standard for dynamic assign-
ment and management of IP addresses from a predefined
range.
Transmission rate
The transmission rate is 10 or 100 Mbps.
Weidmüller modules detect the transmission rate automatically
and set themselves accordingly.
PROFINET distinguishes between three categories for the
transmission of data:
• TCP, UDC and IP for non-time-critical data such as par-
ameter assignment and configuration; response time 100 ms
• Soft Real Time (SRT) for time-critical process data used in
factory automation; response time 10 ms
• Isochronous Real Time (IRT) for particularly demanding
applications, e.g. motion control; response time < 1 ms
category.
The maximum length of the bus cable is the same for both
transmission rates.
The following table can serve as a guide for bus installations
complying with the standard:
Max. bus extension (m) Data rate (Mbps)

EtherNet/IP
EtherNet/IP
Principle
EtherNet/IP (Ethernet Industrial Protocol) is an open standard
that was developed by Rockwell Automation and the Open
DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA) for industrial networks.
EtherNet/IP is based on the Ethernet TCP/IP standards and
the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP).
CIP an open standard that is implemented in ISO layer 7, and
is also used for ControlNet™ and DeviceNet™ installations.
This enables continuous communications between the field
level and the Internet. The protocol includes a control compo-
nent for cyclic, real-time-compatible I/O signal transmission
(implicit messaging) and an information component for the
configuration, diagnosis and management messages (explicit
messaging).
The I/O data uses the User Datagram Protocol/Internet
Protocol (UDP/IP) and the information data uses TCP/IP
protocols.
The IEEE802.3 standard is incremented on layers 1 and 2
(physical media and data link respectively).
Addressing
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is used to
assign addresses to modules in EtherNet/IP networks.
Network structure
Like Standard Ethernet, EtherNet/IP installations are also wired
with a star structure. The star structure is characterised by a
central signal distributor (switch) with individual connections to
all the network’s terminals. A line or tree structure can be set
up with the help of a 3-port switch in the device or in the
proximity of each device.

Modbus TCP
MODBUS TCP
Principle
Modbus TCP is a fieldbus system for automation technology
based on EtherNet TCP/IP. It has been accepted by the
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as a draft RFC standard
and has been made available for all to use by Schneider
Automation. Modbus TCP is based on Modbus, a well-
established industrial application protocol. The Modbus object
models remain unchanged.
A connection is set up via TCP/IP by the server (e.g. I/O
device) being addressed via port number 502. Commands are
initiated by the client (Master) and executed by the server
(slave). The length of a Modbus telegram is max. 256 bytes.
Network structure
Like Standard Ethernet, Modbus TCP installations are also
wired with a star structure. The star structure is characterized
by a central signal distributor (switch) with individual connec-
tions to all the network’s terminals. A line or tree structure can
be set up with the help of a 3-port switch in the device or in
the proximity of each device.
Weidmüller can supply products for the network infrastructure
– please refer to our Industrial Ethernet catalogue.
Addressing
The addressing is carried out via a BOOTP (Internet Bootstrap
Protocol) inquiry via the client, using the Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP), or the user can set the IP
address with a software tool.
Bus extension/transmission rate
The transmission rate is 10 or 100 Mbps.
Weidmüller modules detect the transmission rate automatically
and set themselves accordingly.
The maximum length of the bus cable is the same for both
transmission rates.

Screwty® for M8 / M12
Accessories
The perfect tool for all situations
Screwty® is the ideal, universal tool for tightening and releasing cable
glands on all common sensor and actuator cables. The Screwty® can
also reach those round plug connectors normally considered inaccessible!
No great force is required – simply turn the tool to tighten or release the
plug connector as required.
The Screwty® also fits the majority (more than 90%) of the line and
plug connectors of other suppliers and is therefore a unique tool useful
throughout the world. The Screwty® consists of a handle with a conven-
tional 1/4" fitting. This means it can be used for all sizes: for M12 and M8
round plug connectors, and the M12F and M8F types, also for plugs
and sockets on custom cables.
The Screwty® is suitable for the following round plug connectors:
Size M8 M8F M12 M12F
10 ±0.3 mm 11.9 ±0.3 mm 14.5 ±0.3 mm 19.8 ±0.3 mm
Thread M8x1 M8x1 M12x1 M12x1
An adjustable torque fitting is also available for the Screwty® – for
guaranteeing extra reliability during installation.
The torque can be infinitely adjusted between 0.5 and 1.7 Nm. This
accurate setting enables all round plug connectors to be tightened
precisely with a certain torque.
Weidmüller specifies the following torques for its round plug connectors:
Size M8 M8F M12 M12F
Torque 0.5 – 0.6 Nm 0.5 – 0.6 Nm 0.8 – 1.0 Nm 0.8 – 1.0 Nm
Thread M8x1 M8x1 M12x1 M12x1
The Screwty® an also be fitted with other blades to create a torque screw-
driver. You can find these blades in the “Tools” section of the main
catalogue.

Sensor cables
Connecting lines
Many applications with sensors require suitable connecting
cables. The connecting cables are available in different designs.
The M12/M8 plug-in connectors are available in straight and
90° versions and also with LEDs.
• When plugged in, the M12 connecting cables comply with
class of protection IP68.
• The cable sheathing is black and made of polyurethane
(PUR or PVC).
• The connecting cables are supplied with two marking
sleeves.
Corresponding tags TM-I 18 for the marking sleeves can be
found in this chapter.
Sensor cables
Weidmüller can supply various cable lengths as indicated in the
following table:
Typical cable lengths are:

Practical solutions based on practical experience
The coded order number represents an easy way of ordering
the cables you want from this wide range of products. The
cable length required is added to the 6-digit number specified
by Weidmüller (see example). The order numbers on the
following pages show the extensive range of cable lengths
available.

Sensor cables with plug at one end only
Sensor/actuator cable pre-assembled with M8/M12
plug-in connector at one end
Machine designers frequently require individual line lengths.
Sensor cables with a connector fitted at one end only can
be easily adapted to the corresponding situation.
The cables are available in many different versions: straight,
90° and with all common pole numbers (3, 4 and 5). Plugs
and sockets can be assembled to suit individual customer
requirements for connecting cables.
The cable sheathing is of PUR (polyurethane) and is suitable for
use with cable carrier systems.
Plugs and cables are in neutral black.

Valve connector
Valve connector with integral seal
This range of valve connectors are fitted with a transparent
housing, which provides the added advantage of allowing the
operating status indicators to be seen from all sides. An additio-
nal seal is not needed in this case as it is already integrated in
the housing. In addition, a lug has been included in the con-
struction to ensure that the protective hose fits securely. All
variants are equipped with supprossor circuitry.
Weidmüller’s delivery programme includes valve connectors of
the types A, B and C to DIN and industrial standards.
Protection to IP67 is fulfilled when plugged. Socket or pin
connectors with various cable exits and a variety of pole
numbers can also be obtained from Weidmüller.
