First Blizzard...in October

23 OCT - 29 OCT 2011

The Rabble Rousers huddle together before the football game against Fordham begins. The Rabs still cheered on the team and crowd despite the snow.

The football team fought through the snow storm and resulted in a 55-0 victory over Fordham.

As the crowd dispersed because of the snowy conditions, the cadets, or rather, the “12th man” stayed to support the Army team as they defeated Fordham.

CDT Mike Kohne finds his truck buried in snow at Camp Buckner. CDT Kohne said that, “he had a fun time” digging out his truck.

Late October in the Hudson Valley is known for its colorful trees and picturesque autumn scenery…not blizzards. On 29 October, a blizzard hit the Corps of Cadets at West Point, but that did not stop the Saturday Morning Inspection (SAMI) , the cadets walking area tours, or the football team beating Fordham. In the first snow-filled football game since the mid 1980’s, the Army team forged through the wintry mix and even completed a pass into the end zone (CDT Max Jenkins). Even though most of the crowd was told to leave during halftime, the Corps of Cadets, dressed in ACU’s and Gortex, braved the blizzard in order to support their Army team in their 55-0 victory. CDT Max Jenkins, the starting quarterback said, “It was definitely up to be a memorable event. With the conditions, it would have been easy to be negative about the situation. The only choice we had was to embrace and enjoy it. Christmas came early! It was clear that we just went out there, decided to have some fun and play as hard as we could. It was a great way to end the seniors’ career at Michie Stadium.” The next day, most of the snow had melted away, but there still remained remnants of the blizzard from the night before. Firsties who parked their cars down the street at Camp Buckner found out that their vehicles were buried under about a foot of snow. Overall, this unusual, but eventful weekend will surely go down in history. Another story for our future graduates to share to the cadets of years to come. Written and Submitted by CDT Noelle Kerr
