GETTING READY FOR EASTER Some people dread Lent as a time of suffering and sacrifice. Cheer up! Lent is a season of prepa-ration for Easter. The fasting and penance associated with Lent are the ways Christians across the ages have focused their attention on and deepened their connection to God. Here are some ways you can observe Lent on your own, with your fami-ly, and with St. Matthew’s: the special services for Ash Wednesday and Holy Week, volunteer on your own or as a family; help a neighbor, seek and give forgiveness, read the Bible daily. You can fast by giving up luxury foods, favorite foods, meat, or dining out. Give the money you save to organizations that help the poor. For more thoughts, check out maryology.com. WALKING THE LABYRINTH DURING LENT Looking for some serenity and solace as we slow into a Lenten rhythm? We invite you to experience anew this ancient form of “embodied prayer” and walk the St. Matthew’s labyrinth. The labyrinth will be open an accessible in the NW corner of the sanctuary from Ash Wednesday through Good Friday. Informational materials will be available, which walkers can use to orient themselves to this beautiful and sacred practice. During the week, the labyrinth can be accessed during church hours, Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:00 pm. Go to the church office to get a key, and return the key after you are finished. Submitted by Travis Helms & Judy Neely

LENT MADNESS . . . WHO WILL WIN THE GOLDEN HALO THIS YEAR? Look in Huffman Hall for Lent Madness brackets—think March Madness only with saints. Mother Mary and Christine Havens are having a friendly competition over which saint will win the Golden Halo this year. You can go to www.lentmadness.org to find out more and play along—because your votes could help determine whether Mary or Christine has to wear a halo designed by Christian and Travis. Printed brackets are available outside Christine’s office in the basement (B-15). Submitted by Christine Havens

YOUR ENDOWMENT COMMITTEE IS SEEKING APPLICATIONS FOR GRANTS The Permanent Endowment Fund consists of dona-tions made by members and friends of St Matthew’s. We’re seeking your help in identifying and funding transformational projects that fulfill our purpose to share God’s love. Consider projects in the following areas: seed money for new projects (Soul of a Musician); mission work (Helping our Neighbors); refugee assistance (Hope and Sesame); new programs and of-ferings for the church (updating the Youth Center, yoga as embodied prayer, senior luncheons); or other ideas. The grant process is easy—go to https://stmattsaustin.org/About/endowment-fund.html, fill out the application at the link, and send it to [email protected]. The next Endowment Committee meeting is Monday, April 1, so don’t delay! Please get your grant application in by Monday, March 25. Contact [email protected] with any questions. Submitted by Chris Wilson

MARCH ART DISPLAY Through March, a retrospective display of paintings by our own parishioner, Shirley Slaughter, is on view in the basement hallway. Take some time this month for some art-inspired Lenten reflection. Submitted by Linda Fryer

IS THAT ST. MATTHEW’S DOOR LOCKED OR UNLOCKED? When you unlock an outside door after 4:00 pm or during the week-end, please relock it after yourself. If the door is unlocked after 4:00 pm or on the weekend, please lock it. Those folks who need to get into the buildings all have keys! Submitted by Chris Schumacher, Business Manager

THANK YOU ON BEHALF OF CARITAS FOOD PANTRY Thank you to everyone who responded to our request for cloth shopping and heavy plastic HEB bags for the Caritas Food Pantry. This week’s primary non-perishable food item needs are: canned corn, canned spinach, canned fruit, and Hamburger or Tuna Helper. Other items are, of course, welcome, too. You can drop them off in the Caritas Corner of the sanctuary Commons or in Huffman Hall at the Family Service. If you’d prefer to make a donation of $1 or more toward purchasing food for the pantry, there is a money box in the Commons, too. With grateful thanks. Submitted by Jane Baxter Lynn

REMINDER OF WEEKLY WORD GUIDELINES It’s been nearly a year since the “new” orders of service and the shortened print format of the Weekly Word changed. Thank you to all for your flexibility and input. As a reminder, here is a link to the guide-lines we set out when we made the change: https://s3.amazonaws.com/dfc_attachments/public/documents/3250923/Weekly_Word_Article_Submission_Guide.pdf. Headlines and bylines are not counted as part of the 125 word limit. Submitted by Christine Havens

A NOTE FROM CHEF ROBERT We had to empty the food pantry and the dish room when the new floor was installed. As a result we found a lot of “stuff” that does not belong in the food pantry. All the non-food/paper items can be stored in cabi-net 2 (II). Food items need to be labeled and, remember, expired cans and packages must be discarded. There is a table in Huffman Hall with all the items that need to be claimed and stored in the proper cabinet. If you have any questions, Chris Schumacher will be glad to help. Submitted by Chef Robert Mayberry

DON’T THOSE FLOORS IN HUFFMAN LOOK GREAT? The installation of the new floors was finished two weeks ago and we are getting a great response. These floors will be easier for Jose to keep clean and new looking. In addition, they do not require waxing and polishing! Please keep in mind that chairs and tables cannot be pushed over the floor. Pushing the furniture will damage the surface. Submitted by Chris Schumacher, Business Manager

BUILDING FAITH WITH LEGOS! CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL has resumed—this Sunday only, we’ll be in the Huffman Hall Nursery—at 9:15 am to hear/watch an amazing story from the Jesus Storybook Bible video series and then create an image from the lesson. This is open to all ages and we hope you will join us. For those kiddos that don’t love Legos, we will have lots of creative arts and crafts to help discover the story a little deeper.

CALLING ALL KIDS WHO LIKE TO SING—KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SENIOR HIGH We’re going to sing at the combined service on May 5, for the bishop’s visit. We’ll sing an awesome arrangement of “Somebody’s Knockin’”! Please email Mary Smith at [email protected] to let her know if your children want to help lead worship by singing in a choir. Also, please let her know time/s most convenient for your children to practice. We might schedule 20-30 minutes of practice after Family Services over the next couple of months, but Mary is open to other suggestions. We have about 6 weeks to pull this together, so please contact Mary ASAP! Submitted by Mary Smith
