During writers workshop, the fourth graders are working on opinion writing. This month they are learning three different ways to “hook” their reader, how to add transition words to their writing, and three different ways to end an opinion essay. In reading, we are continuing our nature unit. As we read Birches, a poem by Robert Frost, we will be doing a directed drawing of Birch trees and creat-ing our own poems about nature.

Math

This month we are going to continue working with fractions. We will review how to find equivalent fractions, and how to add and sub-tract fractions with like and unlike denominators. We will also learn more about decimals! The students will investigate the relationships between fractions and decimals by modeling various fractions with base ten area pieces and then naming them as decimals.

Science/Social Studies

This month in Science the fourth graders are investigating weath-ering, erosion and deposition. They will be making models to demon-strate glacial erosion and using a stream table to model valley land-forms. In Social Studies we will start learning about the California mission system! The fourth graders will be choosing one mission to research and learn more about.

The fourth graders had a great time on our CARES field trip in November!

Our first CARES field trip was to the Destiny Community Center. The morning started off with a Fortnight Dance contest. We then watched a magic show! After, everyone had a lot of fun jumping in the bounce houses, playing dodge ball, riding huge tricycles, playing ping pong and hanging out with friends!
