Hello food and wine (inside)! The State Government has confirmed that cafes and restaurants will be able to open their doors for indoor dining as of today.

Restrictions have been lifted to allow cafes and restaurants to serve meals and alcohol to up to 20 people – 10 indoors and 10 outdoors.

The Hon Steven Marshall MP, Premier of SA, and Police Commissioner Grant Stevens announced the easing of coronavirus restrictions and the move to Step 2 of the state’s Road to Recovery earlier this week.

Pubs will reopen for seated dining only from 5 June 2020, three days earlier than expected. As part of Step 2, restrictions will also be eased on the following:

• Cinemas and theatres; • Galleries and museums; • Beauty, nail, tattoo and non-therapeutic massage businesses; • Driving lessons; • Gyms and indoor fitness activities; • Funerals (maximum of 50 attendees); • Competition sport without spectators.

We urge the community to continue practising social distancing and personal hygiene, and also to drink responsibly as random breath testing will restart from today in line with cafes and restaurants being allowed to serve alcohol.

Shop local The Town of Walkerville is supporting businesses as best as we can as our community continues to deal with the effects of COVID-19. We are promoting businesses which are still trading, or reopening their doors during this time, to our community under new shop local campaign Still working in Walkerville.

Please email us if you would like to be included: [email protected].

Living in the Town of Walkerville The Council moved onto a new vision for the Township as it endorsed the 2020-2024 Strategic Plan this week.

A liveable, cohesive, safe, active and sustainable township are the key words that will drive and shape the district over the next four years. The 2020-2024 Living in the Town of Walkerville: a strategic community plan gives Council a framework for decisions about infrastructure investment, assets, community and corporate services. Future projects and budgets will be assessed on their capacity to deliver the targets in the plan, as well as for how they align to the aspirations of the seven key pillars.

Public art in the Town of Walkerville When you hear the word art – what do you imagine? Do you think of the bright swirls of street art and murals, or maybe a classic sculpture that represents a historic character from a community? The Town of Walkerville is consulting on its draft Public Art Strategy and we want to know what art means to you.

Click here to view the draft Public Art Strategy. Hard copies are also available at the Civic and Community Centre.

Have your say on public art in the Town of Walkerville by filling out this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/tow-draft-public-art-strategy.

To provide written feedback, please email [email protected] with the subject line "Draft Public Art Strategy". Responses can also be posted to Chief Executive Officer, PO Box 55, Walkerville, SA, 5081.

Consultation concludes Friday, 19 June 2020, at 5pm.

Walkerville Library is open again! We were very pleased to be able to reopen the library to the community from Monday 18 May 2020. It has been fantastic to see so many familiar faces again over the past week. On our first day of reopening, we had more than 100 people visit the library between 9am and 5pm. Library staff have been managing busy periods with a maximum of 10 people at a time, and the team has been impressed with our visitors’ patience and attendance to social distancing. Approximately 470 items were borrowed on Monday, including 22 holds collected from the concierge counter to reduce numbers required to enter the library. These numbers show how important the library service is to our community and we are pleased to have you back in the books!

Restrictions set out in the SA Commissioner of Police Directive earlier this month still apply. Temporary changes remain in place – including reduced opening hours – to ensure we keep you, our staff and the rest of the community safe. For a full list of precautions, please visit: https://www.walkerville.sa.gov.au/library.

Remember our libraries have many fantastic services available online, which you can access at https://www.walkerville.sa.gov.au/library.

Medindie Traffic Parking Plan update A limited number of residential parking permit bays will be introduced along Briar Avenue, Medindie.

Last month, at the Ordinary Council meeting on 20 April 2020, Council resolved to reconfigure the parking controls in Briar Avenue, Medindie, to enable unrestricted parking on the north side with some permit parking and No Stopping on the south side (school days only). The provision of a limited number of residential parking permit bays along the northern side of Briar Avenue (eastern end) was approved with appropriate locations for a maximum number of six parking permit bays along Briar Avenue east to be determined, at a subsequent Council meeting.

On 18 May 2020, Council resolved to introduce six residential parking permit bays on the northern side of Briar Avenue, Medindie, eastern end. The bays will be in consecutive sequence set back from the Hawkers Road intersection.

The parking permits will initially be issued for a maximum of 12 months, expiring on the 30/06/2021 in line with our Residential Parking Permit Policy. Council will monitor the new parking controls and evaluate their effectiveness over the next 12 months.

Briar Avenue residents who wish to apply for a residential parking permit will need to complete our application form, either using our NEW Online Residential Parking Permit Application form, or by printing a hardcopy click HERE.

For further information please contact Council on 8342 7100 or email [email protected].

Digital Walkerville Did you know that we are continuing to share our programs and events with you online?

As our in-person events were cancelled because of COVID-19 and we are still unsure when these services will be able to resume – we are continuing to support the people and businesses which had programs scheduled at the Council by turning these into virtual sessions. We believe this is an important way to keep offering these programs to our residents who were planning on attending. If you have not had a chance to view any, please visit the Town of Walkerville Facebook page or our Digital Walkerville page on Council website.

The roundabout at Dutton Terrace and Victoria Avenue will be upgraded The existing roundabout at the intersection of Dutton Terrace and Victoria Avenue, Medindie, will have the crossing points upgraded and made DDA compliant. This work is expected to be completed by the end of May.

Herbert Street reconstruction Reconstruction of Herbert Street, Medindie, continues. Work involves reconstruction of all footpaths, all driveways and the complete road, to match the recently reconstructed work in The Avenue. Traffic controls, including road closure for through traffic, are in place.

Temporary 2-hour parking controls are now incorporated in Hawkers Road to allow for school drop-off and pick-up during the works. Work will start at 7am and finish by 5pm each day. Works are expected to be completed mid-June. Reused bluestone is being used on the northern kerb, with new bluestone on the southern side.

Street sweeping helps keep the Township clean Additional autumn leaf collections have commenced within the township. The street sweeper will be focusing on streets where there is significant fallen organic leaf matter. Officers are inspecting streets and adding to the list as required, this list changes week to week subject to the amount of leaf litter present.

This not only keeps our streets looking clean and tidy, it also helps protect our environment by removing leaf litter and debris before they enter the stormwater system. It also reduces the chance of flooding in the event of heavy rain and importantly clean streets ensuring our roads are safe for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Our sweeper has to stop to spread materials that have been placed into piles. While we appreciate the efforts of residents to pile leaf litter, our street sweepers cannot pick up these piles. Leaving the leaf litter spread in the gutter helps keep our sweepers moving.

Our street sweeping programs are seasonally adjusted to effectively manage the level of risk in streets where issues are present generally relating to street tree litter.

Details about our street sweeping program* are available below.
