Please advise one of the Sidespersons if you would like Communion brought to you in the pew.

If necessary, you are welcome to sit for those parts of the liturgy when it is normal to stand.

REFLECTION Today we honour not only the well-known saints who have become the heroes of the Church, but also all those who have led Godly lives and been an inspiration to others. In our worship let us reflect upon at least one person who has been an example of faith to us and give thanks to God for their witness.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Eternal God, neither death nor life can separate us from your love: grant that we may serve you faithfully here on earth, and in heaven rejoice with all your saints who ceaselessly proclaim your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

FIRST READING

A reading from the Revelation to St John 7: 9–17

After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!’ And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.’

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, ‘Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?’ I said to him, ‘Sir, you are the one that knows.’ Then he said to me, ‘These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’

A short silence is observed.

Reader For the Word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God.

PSALM 34: 1–10, 22

At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalm is recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon.

At the 9:00am Eucharist the following antiphon and setting of the Psalm is used.

At the 11:00am Eucharist a Book of Common Prayer setting of the Psalm is sung by the Choir.

Response:

Chant: E. F. Day

I will bless the Lord continually:

his praise shall be always in my mouth.

Let my soul boast of the Lord:

the humble shall hear it and rejoice.

O praise the Lord with me:

let us exalt his name together.

For I sought the Lord’s help and he answered:

and he freed me from all my fears.

Look towards him and be bright with joy:

your faces shall not be ashamed.

Here is a wretch who cried, and the Lord heard me:

and saved me from all my troubles.

The angel of the Lord encamps round those who fear him:

and delivers them in their need.

O taste and see that the Lord is good:

happy are they that hide in him!

Fear the Lord, all you his holy ones:

for those who fear him never lack.

Lions may suffer want and go hungry:

but those who seek the Lord lack nothing good.

The Lord ransoms the lives of his servants:

and none who hide in him will be destroyed. Response

SECOND READING

A reading from the First Letter of John 3: 1–3

See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

GOSPEL READING MATTHEW 5: 1–12

Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Matthew.

All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.’

Deacon For the Gospel of the Lord, All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

COMMUNION

Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail.

You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security.

We also request that people not use the practice of ‘intinction’ at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request.

ORGAN VOLUNTARY

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) – Allegro assai vivace from Sonata no. 1 in F.

I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, From henceforth, blessed are the dead which die in the Lord: Even so, saith the Spirit: for they rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

Justorum animae in manu Dei sunt, et non tanget illos tormentum malitiae. Visi sunt oculis insipientium mori, illi autem sunt in pace.

The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and the trial of evil will not touch them. They seem to the eyes of the ignorant to have died, but in fact they are at peace.

NOTICES COMING EVENTS AT ST JAMES’ AND OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS

ST JAMES’ INSTITUTE Rector’s Series: Theology and Mission ‘Mission statements’ are de rigueur for institutions in the modern western world. Our St James’ Parish one reads: we are to be ‘a transformational community built on the love of God and worked out in the ministries of word, sacrament and incarnation.’ But do we need such statements? Are they merely marketing ploys to differentiate our product from others and thereby give us an edge? Or, perhaps the church is only a ‘service club’ for religious people, similar to Rotary or Lions? This series of studies explores the relationship between what we believe, who we are, and what we do as Christians. Join Fr Andrew Sempell for an entertaining series of four studies on Thursdays 9, 16, 23 and 30 November, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. A light meal (e.g. quiche, salad, bread and fruit) will be served. Cost for the whole series (includes meal and notes on the series): $60/50 or $20 per session. Registration is essential due to catering requirements, either email [email protected] or phone 8227 1305.

Advent Study Group Series: Church and Kingdom As we have done earlier in the year, we are using the Pilgrim Course materials for this series. The series is called, Church and Kingdom and focuses on a good variety of topics. However, there are six studies in the series, but we will only be completing four of them in groups, since Advent is only four weeks long. Each group will be studying the four studies of their choice. The remaining two studies, members can complete at home.

SYDNEY OPEN TODAY from 1:00pm the Church will be open for participants in the Sydney Open to come and experience a little of the life of St James’ Church. The programme is as follows:

1:00pm – The Choir of St James’ in rehearsal; 1:30pm – Church History Q & A with Geoff Taylor; 1:45pm – Bell-ringing with Marylon Coates; 2:00pm – Organ Talk and Demonstration; 2:30pm – Children’s Chapel Talk with Christopher Waterhouse and Charlotte Wiltshire; 3:00pm – Church History Q & A with Geoff Taylor; 3:30pm – Organ Talk and Demonstration; 4:00pm – Children’s Chapel Talk with Christopher Waterhouse and Charlotte Wiltshire.

CHORAL FESTIVAL OF REMEMBRANCE On Saturday 11 November, Remembrance Day, at 5:00pm there will be a special choral service of remembrance when we welcome the Friends of Cathedral Music to St James’ Church. On this occasion, The Choir of St James’ will be joined by the Choir of St Andrew’s Cathedral, Sydney, and the Choir of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta. During the service, a plaque to Frederick Septimus Kelly (1881-1916) will be dedicated. Kelly was a talented Australian composer, a parishioner at St James’, lived close to the Church in Phillip Street, and attended Sydney Grammar School. One of his compositions, ‘O Lord have mercy’ will form part of the service. All are invited to attend.

Fr John also received the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) Outstanding Contribution to the Sector Award in 2016.

THE CHRISTMAS BOWL Please help the Christmas Bowl save lives this Christmas. The Christmas Bowl is the annual appeal of Act for Peace, the international aid agency of the National Council of Churches in Australia. Each year, our Parish

commissions Act for Peace Representatives to help raise awareness and to assist with the distribution of Christmas Bowl envelopes to fellow parishioners and visitors during Advent. You are warmly invited to be part of this team. Please let Howard Graham (7:45am congregation) know if you are interested or would like to know more, either by calling 0422 917 791, or email: [email protected]

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS Vivien Whitfield reports that $294 was raised this year as a result of the sale of Entertainment Books. The money will go to the Outreach Committee of St James’ for distribution to the projects we support.

NEW WORSHIP GROUP: THE RESTORATION PROJECT Come and join us. We are a small group trialling a different way of gathering as Christians. We aim to practice the disciplines of spiritual transformation – both historic and contemporary – in Christian community. We will be meeting on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month, for a trial period of six months at 6:30pm in the crypt. (Feel free to arrive from 6:00pm).

We will have a focus on listening to God in our practices. As such, we aim to be more of a spiritual gymnasium than a classroom, as we seek, under God, to restore ourselves, our relationships, and our world.

We will be having a meal after the

gathering, so let us know if you are coming for catering purposes (and any dietary requirements) by emailing Nick Ingram at [email protected]

ABM EMERGENCY RELIEF APPEALS The Anglican Board of Mission has alerted us to two of their appeals for urgent help for those in need. The first is in response to the situation in Myanmar: This is appeal in support of All Churches Together (ACT) Alliances emergency relief efforts to assist the many Rohinya refugees fleeing from the increasingly violent situation in Myanmar. We are aiming to raise $20,000 to provide vital medical care, emergency food, clean water, and hygiene and sanitation kits for the victims of this crisis. More details are available on the website at www.abmission.org/myanmar-emergency

The second appeal concerns Vanuatu: ABM is working closely with the Anglican Church of Melanesia in Vanuatu with an Emergency Appeal to assist victims of the Manaro Volcano eruptions on the island of Ambae in the north of the country. The situation is dire as the Vanuatu Government has ordered a full-scale evacuation of the island and $10,000 is needed to ensure essential supplies of food and water are delivered to those in greatest need.
