Two Workshops by Mak VanderVinneLocal artist, Mark VanderVinne, will offer two

different workshops at the Chesterton Art Cen-ter this spring. Each workshop will consist of two Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The fi rst workshop, “Composing the Landscape”, will be held Sat., April 27 and May 4. “Understanding Color”, the second workshop, will be held Sat., May 11 and May 18.

“Composing the Landscape” will focus on the un-derlying principles that make a painting’s composi-tion successful.

The second workshop titled, “Understanding Color”, is a workshop intended to guide students on how to see, mix and use color to create harmony and emotion in their art work.

Both of these workshops are open to all painting and drawing media, including oils, acrylics, water-color and pastel. Because each media has its own technique and approach, some knowledge and pre-vious experience in the media of choice is requested. Participants need to bring 3-4 photographs to work from, along with a fairly extensive palette of colors (black and white included). These classes are not for beginners. Some experience is necessary.

The cost for each workshop is $150 for members of the Chesterton Art Center and $175 for non-members. Seating is limited. To register, contact the Chesterton Art Center at 219-926-4711. The Ches-terton Art Center is located at 115 S. 4th St., Ches-terton, IN. A list of all adult and children’s classes at www.chestertonart.com

Logo Contest Winner AnnouncedThe Samaritan Counseling Centers, Inc. has

named Marquette Catholic senior, Brendan Robson, as the winner of the Skedaddle logo contest. There were more than 90 designs submitted for consid-eration. All local high schools were invited to par-ticipate, and the design variations made judging a challenge.

This year is the 10th anniversary for the 5K race/walk. In honor of the popular lake front, spring community event, submitted images ranged from runners, roads, stars, and fl owers to a roadrunner bird, footprints, high-fi ves, and the Michigan City Pier Head Light. One student used a decagon to symbolize the event’s ten years and then manipulat-ed the symbol to look like a stop sign—ironic coun-terpoint to the run/walk concept. In addition, one thoughtful candidate used color but not too much color in recognition of the expense of color printing.

Shown below is the former image followed by the stylized image from Robson, who won a $100 for his successful effort.

The 2013 Skedaddle is scheduled for Saturday, April 27. Interested walkers and runners may reg-ister at www.skedaddle.org

During the week of March 16, 2013, our eighth grade class at Notre Dame took a trip to our na-tion’s capitol with a stop in Philadelphia. Our na-tion’s capitol is where it all happens. There are so many busy people and what they do is important.

The fi rst day we were in D.C. was Saturday, March 16. We arrived at Union Station after a 16 hour train ride from South Bend, Indiana, to Union Station in Washington D.C. After we arrived at our hotel in Georgetown, we walked to a restaurant called Old Europe where we had German food such as stru-del and schnitzel. During that time the executives from Washington Workshops, who helped plan our trip with Mr. Ben Potts, introduced us to some of the Washington Workshops’ ways. When you spoke you had to stand up, say your fi rst and last name, where you were from, and what school you went to. If we were meeting with a VIP we would shake their hand and say our name and where we were from.

NOTRE DAME GOES TO D.C.submitted by Nicole Maroney - 8th Grade

NDCS 8th Graders at the White House

In the Cathedral Basilica ofSaints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia

Sunday, March 17 was St. Patrick’s Day and be-ing from a Catholic school we were going to Mass in Philadelphia. When we arrived in Philadelphia we went to Mass at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. Pope John Paul II declared this church a Ba-silica, and he came and celebrated Mass. After Mass we went to lunch at the Bourse, and then we went

to Betsy Ross’ house. Betsy Ross was the maker of the original American fl ag that the thirteen colonies used as their fl ag. After the Betsy Ross house, we went into the Constitutional Center where we saw a presentation about the history o four country and the Constitution. When we went to see the Liberty Bell, my classmate Noah Scherf is blind so the se-curity guard allowed Noah to touch the Bell and he pointed out the certain aspects that are on the Bell to Noah.

Once we fi nished at Independence Mall, we head-ed to dinner. In Philadelphia there is this rivalry Pat’s vs. Geno’s for the best Philly Cheesesteak; we split up boys and girls to see which one was better. The girls went to Geno’s and the boys went to Pat’s. We had to decide which one was better; obviously Geno’s was better. After that day in Philadelphia we were very excited for the rest of week.

On Monday, March 18 we went to the Newseum,

which is the museum that helps you understand the news. It was a very mind-boggling experience. The reason I say that is because they have an exhibit about 9/11 and the world headlines from the next day and they had an extension from a radio tow-er on one of the twin towers displayed there. They also have a piece of the Berlin Wall and a guard tower from East Berlin. After that amazing expe-rience, we headed to Arlington National Cemetery. At Arlington there are over 400,000 soldiers buried there including the Kennedy family. While we were there, we witnessed the Changing of the Guard and the Wreath Laying ceremony which our class par-ticipated in, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Our guide for the trip said they usually have 20-30 funerals a day so they lower the fl ag to half mast 30 minutes before the fi rst funeral and leave it like that until 30 minutes after the last funeral.

After we left Arlington we took the bus to the Ho-locaust Museum. During our visit there we learned about the price of freedom and what it cost to earn that freedom. That was one of the most graphic mu-seums we went to because these pictures and videos were taken when the war was going on and there was a lot of tension in the air. During the Holocaust more than 6 million Jewish people were killed and they weren’t the only ones persecuted. Anyone who was “inferior” to the Nazi regime was thrown into one of the concentration camps. It was quite incred-ible how much information they had. When we fi n-ished up at the Holocaust Museum we headed to dinner where we met kids from Hawaii, Arizona, Wisconsin, and even Mexico. After dinner we took the bus to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Per-forming Arts where we watched play called “Shear Madness.” If you haven’t seen this play andy ou enjoy improv, murder mysteries, and comedy, you have to see it.

On Tuesday, March 19 we took the bus to the Na-tional Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to cel-ebrate Mass in the Chapel. When I think of a cha-pel I think of a smaller place where you celebrate Mass, but where we celebrated Mass it was a full size church and upstairs was the Basilica.

After Mass we walked around and saw so many different artifacts from popes, the shrines of differ-ent saints, and there were also statues dedicated to some of the saints that have made an impact on the church like Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

After we toured around, we went to the Embassy of Uruguay and met with Mr. Marcelo Magnou. He talked about what it is like in Uruguay and the re-lationship it has with the United States.

After we left the Embassy, we headed to the White House and we were able to talk to Secret Service about their job and some of the experiences they have had as the President’s police force. We dis-cussed the history of the White House and after we took a quick photo we went to the Smithsonian Mu-seum of Natural History. We saw many interesting exhibits about things to so with the natural world like gems and animals. When we left the Smithson-ian of Natural History we headed to the Smithson-ian of American History. We walked around in small groups and picked what we did there. We saw the Star-Spangled Ban-ner exhibit, which talked about the making of the fl ag and the fl ag itself. Once we fi nished with our small groups we took the bus to the Lincoln, the Korean, and the Vietnam memorials. We walked around there and we even did a rubbing at the Viet-nam War Memorial; we took a pencil and paper and rubbed them name of one of the fallen on our paper. When we fi nished at the memorials, we went to Georgetown University for dinner an a tour of the campus.

Senator Coats with Ethan Dolezal near Capitol Hill

Wednesday, March 20 was one of the more im-portant days because we were meeting with our Senators, Joe Donnelly and Dan Coats. We also met with our Congressman, Peter Visclosky later in the day. While we were on Capitol Hill, we went

to the House and Sen-ate Galleries and we sat in on a House vote for the budget. We spent the entire day on Capitol Hill and then we went back to the hotel and had din-ner. After dinner we listened to a lecture about lobbying from an actual lobbyist, Mr. John Farner. He had us lobbying for the Monuments and Memorials in D.C. We all had fun with that

and I would like to do it again.Thursday, March 21, was one of the most im-

portant days of our trip. That was the day we met with Chief Justice John Roberts. The reason why we were able to meet with him is because he is an alumnus of Notre Dame. We talked to him about his job; even though he is a very important person, he was very down to earth and extremely friendly. Af-ter we fi nished speaking with the Chief Justice, we toured the Supreme Court. After the tour we went to the Library of Congress and toured around. After that we went to the Air and Space Museum where we walked around in small groups and picked the exhibits we wanted to see. Once we fi nished at the museum we went for a dinner cruise on the Potomac River. Once we fi nished there we took the bus to some of the memorials. We visited the World War II, the Jefferson, FDR, Martin Luther King Jr., and the Iwo Jima memorials.

Friday, March 22 was our last day in Washington D.C. so we went to Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon was George Washington’s home, and we saw where he is buried and how he lived. After we left Mount Vernon, we headed to the train station and that’s where we ended our trip. Our class had so much fun, there were lots of memories made, and we learned a lot.

The chaperones who accompanied us were Mr. Ben Potts, principal; Mrs. Sara Conn, eighth-grade teacher; and parents Mrs. Rhonda Scherf, Mrs. Meg Caplice, and Mr. Chuck Maroney. We thank them very much.

Unity Foundation Give Day EventA fun, competitive atmosphere will prevail April

26-27 as Unity Foundation of LaPorte County cel-ebrates its 20th anniversary with a 39-hour Give Day event.

Beginning at 6 a.m. on Fri., April 26, online do-nations will be collected at www.LPCountygiveday.org to benefi t 57 Unity nonprofi t and donor funds. A tracking Leaderboard will allow live viewing of the fund totals as the event progresses toward its dramatic close at 9 p.m. on April 27th.

At that point, the top fi ve funds that gather the most gifts will split $15,000 to be used for chari-table purposes. Several special prizes also will be given out during the 39-hour event, leading the par-ticipating funds to strategize in hopes of earning a piece of an additional $5,000.

President Maggi Spartz noted that the current Friends Helping Friends Give Day is “new and improved”, featuring an online credit card dona-tion web site. Though checks and cash donations are welcomed in advance, the focus is on encourag-ing donors to make credit card donations online at www.LPCountygiveday.org

For those wishing to give cash or check dona-tions, it is preferred that they arrive prior to the event, as those monies must be manually input into the system to be counted on the live Leaderboard. Donors can bring cash or checks to the Unity offi ce at 115 East 4th Street, Michigan City, across from the library. Or they can mail checks to PO Box 527, Michigan City, IN 46361, listing the specifi c Give Day fund.

Funds participating in the Give Day event will split their monies evenly between principal and spendable – which means there is money available for the fund to use right away. The prizes also may be spent immediately.

“We also invite everyone to join us at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 at Blue Chip Stardust Event Center for our celebration event, where we’ll thank all of our friends and supporters and enjoy the countdown toward awarding the $20,000 in prizes,” Maggi Spartz said.

The event costs $75, and reservations and pay-ment may be made online at Unity’s regular web site at www.ufl c.net, or by phoning toll-free at 888-898-6489.

Black Irish by Stephan TaltyThey call them psychological crime thrillers. And

that’s a good description. More than just a “who-done-it?” there’s a whole new group of authors go-ing beyond the crime and into the terrifying mind and actions of a killer. Stephan Talty can count him-self among this elite group of authors. Black Irish is a story that will keep you up nights and just as involved as the cops following the clues which get more and more twisted as each new victim is dis-covered...

“Jimmy Ryan awoke into a feeling of space, blind-folded. He wasn’t in the car trunk anymore, at least, and for that he gave a rushed, silent thanks to God. He’d hated tight spaces ever since he could remem-ber...

“Something moved now. Off to his left.“He listened, but the sound died away. The feeling

of complete exposure ran over his skin like acid.”This is the book you’ve been waiting for: an in-

telligent, mystery/thriller that keeps your attention and actually has you thinking about the background and the clues. Many mysteries are predictable, some are weak and some are just plain silly, but Stephan Talty has given us the gift of a fascinating read for that needed “me time.”

Absalom “Abbie” Kearney grew up in Buffalo, New York, in the part of town called The County, because of its largely Irish population. (“...a patch of Ireland in the wilds of America.”) Her father was a respected cop on the Buffalo P.D., now retired. Ab-bie, however, was still an outsider in this closely knit community because everyone knew that she had been adopted by John Kearney when she was only two. Abbie’s mother had been a drug addict, and her unknown father had endowed her with a head of midnight-black hair, “what they called Black Irish in the County.” And even though she had been sent to Harvard University and is now a cop on the Buf-falo P.D., she still felt the sting of being an outsider.

Now taking care of her ailing father while trying to make her way in the male dominated police force, I can imagine Abbie’s daily struggles. And then, one day, things start to happen...

Jimmy Ryan’s body was found in the basement of a church. Well, what was left of his body, that is. Abbie and her partner, Z, catch the case, but in The County, rank and fi le close up and no one knows anything. See, if they did, they would take care of the matter themselves. Only at the Gaelic Club, where an old school mate is bartending, does Abbie fi nd out the slimmest of leads, which leads to more closed mouths.

Not to worry! Three more men are tortured and killed. What is their connection? Only the killer’s strange clues and calling cards lead Abbie deeper and deeper into a well of revenge and madness. Per-haps the answer lies within Abbie’s own family’s past. And perhaps it lies within the history of the IRA and the struggle for Irish independence.

All in all, it’s a clever blending of history, family relationships and one woman’s quest to discover her own history and what John Kearney has chosen not to tell her.

Publishers Weekly said, “A memorable story of be-trayal and vengeance.”

Best selling author Tess Gerritsen said, “Abbie Kearney is one of the most intriguing new suspense protagonists in memory, and Black Irish marks the captivating start of a brilliant thriller series.”

Till next time, happy reading!
