A place of resurrection, life, and hope

The CATHEDRAL KIDS programme is normally offered at the Cathedral during the 10.00 am service on Sundays of the school term. It is for children up to 12 years. The children and leaders move to their area after the opening of the ser-vice, and return for communion. Visitors are most welcome.

Healing Centre at Awakeri.

regular worship and children’s

programmes.

THE MARTYRS OF UGANDA were for the

most part young baptised page boys of Mwanga, the king or kabaka (ruler) of Buganda. Both An-glicans and Roman Catholics, in their loyalty to Christ, died without complaint by slow burning or torture on the orders of Mwanga in the years 1885 and 1886. Mwanga identified their Chris-tian faith with disobedience, and saw their alle-giance to God as a threat to his absolute authori-ty. (3 June)

JANANI LUWUM, ARCHBISHOP AND MARTYR

The Anglican Church in Uganda, founded as the result of Church Missionary Society work in the 1870s, has long been known for its martyrs. Archbishop Janani Luwum, killed on 16 February 1977 - almost certainly on the orders of Presi-dent Idi Amin himself - joined that long tradition. He was born in 1922 in the Acholi district of Uganda. He had no early education, spending his youth as a goatherder. After a period as a lay preacher he was ordained in 1956. He became bishop of the newly-formed Diocese of Northern Uganda in 1969. Following his consecration, Ja-nani was appointed to the Anglican Consultative Council and served on the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches. In 1977, Radio Uganda reported Janani Luwum had been killed in a car accident. (17 February)

VESTRY - The Vestry met last week

and made several important decisions that we’ll be acting on in the days ahead. They include …

the opening of a place of daily prayer and reflection inside the nave to be called The Resurrection Chapel. This will be in the second of the two rooms used by children in the south west corner;

the children’s Sunday programme will be re-located and take over the for-mer prayer room next to the parish lounge, in the south-eastern end of the cathedral;

the refurbishing of the south ambula-tory corridor as an historical display area;

the lighting (from the inside) of the heritage window at the main entrance so it can be seen by all who enter the cathedral.

These projects require little cost and are included in our maintenance budget, but the final and biggest undertaking, and the most important for parishioners reliant on wheelchairs, or limited in their mobility, is…

the creation of a south side ramp up to the chancel altar and Maori Chap-el. We will need to find donations of at least $5000 to enable this project to begin. Please let Bishop John know if you are interested in contributing. The ramp would make a huge difference to those who find the chancel steps difficult, dangerous, and, for some, impossible.

We were delighted to receive our first donation this week - $500 to kick-start this project!

novelist, who was born in Uganda where her parents taught at Buwalasi theologi-cal college will be the guest preacher.

Her family knew Bishop Janani Luwum, one of the martyrs of Uganda we remem-ber in our calendar of saints.

Thank you for a great response to our plea for people to give us a couple of hours a month to provide a welcoming presence in the cathedral and keep the doors open to the public. A few more names are welcomed so Alison Thomp-son can complete the roster. Sign up sheet and “job description” available on the back table.

Our new RESURRECTION CHAPEL in the south west corner of the nave will be open for business next week, newly painted, carpeted and illuminated. The business of prayer that is.

From Tuesday 11th

June, the Resurrec-tion Chapel will be the place for:

Morning Prayer at 9.00am Tuesdays to Fridays;

the Earthquake Eucharist at 10.30am on Tuesdays;

and Midday Prayer at 12.30pm on Wednesdays.
