2017-2018 Issue No 5 29 th September 2017 Weekly Newsletter from the Headmaster Dear Parents, Over the course of the past few weeks, there has been an increase in emails purporting to be from Brentwood School email addresses. School email addresses such as; Headmaster@ and Bursar@ are generic, and do often end up on spam lists. These spam lists are then used by hackers to target organisations to elicit personal details by sending targeted emails with malicious links. Please be particularly vigilant when you receive emails purporting to be from the Bursary and never click on a link to pay a fee invoice. As part of our beginning of year programme of professional development, all staff attended Cyber Security Awareness training and I would like to share some of the information with you. The first is a link to the Microsoft Safety and Security Centre (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/safety) giving details on how to recognise phishing emails and the second is to Get Safe Online (https://www.getsafeonline.org/) which gives advice and details on how to protect your equipment, yourselves and your children. On Monday 2nd October at 6.45pm, Mr Quartermain (Deputy Head Academic) will be presenting his Human Universe lecture entitled “Mapping our World - From Ptolemy to MRI scans”. Please sign up to attend this event by contacting Miss Butterfield [email protected] Given the significant interest in the Talking Teens workshop, we are hoping to run a larger scale event on parenting teenagers and the teen brain called “Teenagers Translated”. This talk has been provisionally booked for the evening of Wednesday 21st February 2018. We will send out more details closer to the time. You can register your interest early by contacting Miss Butterfield. Now that iPads have become a permanent feature of our lessons and homework tasks we have drawn up some guidelines to help pupils use their devices and Google more effectively. These have been shared with pupils via email and should shortly appear in their iBooks also. Please take the time to read through these carefully with your son/daughter. If you have any further questions about digital etiquette or appropriate use please do not hesitate to contact Ms Dina Porovic, Director of Teaching and Learning ([email protected]) As we eagerly await the official announcement of Brentwood School’s involvement in the upcoming series of BBC2 Robot Wars, Sabrina Skilling, Rebecca Ashford, Mary Hirst and Juliette Skilling have been busy setting their sights further afield. Having been approached by an international television company based in Shanghai - Brentwood School have put together a team of engineers who have designed a robot which will be pitted against professional teams from all over the world. Furthermore not only do we understand we are the only international school team, but also the only all-female team in the world to take part. The students’ involvement in such an academically challenging project is being studied as part of a report by King’s College London. Their top secret design touched down in Shanghai yesterday where it will be joined by the pupils in mid- October. Mr Walland has been impressed by the way pupils have taken a trans-disciplinary approach to their work involving all aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). presentation and essay showed a wealth of personal insight and maturity when discussing such a complex question. Many congratulations Harry!

Academic Enrichment Clubs At Junior Colloquium and JSABs this week, Mrs Ingle (our School Librarian) introduced the idea of mindfulness to the pupils and explored ways of increasing our peace of mind. Pupils at both groups were fully engaged with her presentation and left encouraged to develop ‘mindfulness’ in the everyday. Next week at our Academic Enrichment Clubs, Sixth Former, Greg Harding, an A Level student of German and winner of a prestigious German UK Connection Scholarship, will be presenting his ideas and experiences of living behind the Berlin Wall, in East Germany. This is in connection with German BAC week. All First and Second Year pupils are invited to Junior Colloquium on Monday and all pupils in the Third, Fourth and Fifth years are invited to attend JSABs on Tuesday. Both meetings take place at 1.20pm in the BAC Lecture Theatre.

New grading system for GCSE and iGCSE qualifications A key feature of recent education reforms is the introduction of a new 9 to 1 grading system, which is being brought in alongside curriculum modifications. This joint initiative means that the more rigorous GCSE syllabi are decoupled from the old A* to U grading system, which has been perceived to have experienced grade inflation. There is not a direct mapping between the two grade systems. In order to further assist with this, the document attached to this newsletter provides a useful guide and will help students and parents to understand the change. The document can also be found in the Letters Home area on Google Drive (link below) in the Fifth Year and General Correspondence Folders. It is worth highlighting that 9 is the highest grade and 1 the lowest. As an example, a 5 would be awarded to approximately the top third of students gaining an equivalent of a grade C and the bottom third of a grade B. The new 9 to 1 system will be employed by the majority of subjects that current Fifth Form students will take external examinations for next summer. The exceptions are Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Double Science, Graphic Products, Resistant Materials, Classical Civilisation, Computer Science and History. Students are due to receive assessment grades shortly, and teachers will be using the 9-1 system for Fourth Form and the relevant subjects in the Fifth Form. If you have any queries about the new grading system or would like to discuss it further then please contact Mr Beedell (Director of Studies) [email protected].

Levels, the current picture with regards university entrance, and broader issues in the education sector. We very much look forward to welcoming you at this event. German favourites such as frankfurters will also be available for sale in the Tuck Shop all week and we will celebrate a German-themed lunch in the dining halls on Thursday. On Monday, Frau Beate Reinhardt, formerly of East Germany, will be talking to 6th Form students of German and History about growing up under the communist dictatorship there. On Wednesday we will be running a German quiz especially for the First and Second Years in the BAC with German and Swiss chocolate as prizes. The week will be rounded off serenely with our Upper Sixth Form musicians performing German and Austrian classics in the Tuck Shop area on Friday lunchtime.

The website link: https://www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/how-to-pack-a-shoebox/ shows what items can be included in the Shoeboxes. Please encourage your child to think of those less fortunate than themselves, as those who receive the shoeboxes would not otherwise be receiving any gifts at Christmas. The shoeboxes need to be brought to CO2, before school, at second lunch or after School by 17th November. Please also have a look at the pleasure the shoeboxes bring to children by clicking the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzUhsxD3OF8

Sport Cricket We are delighted to report that Maddy Austin has been selected for the U13 Essex County Cricket team for the forthcoming season. Fencing Maddy Gale competed in the Under 17 British National selection event in Hendon at the Leon Paul Fencing Centre. She was in good form to win all but one fight in the preliminary stage. She only lost in the fourth elimination round finishing a highly respectable 17th out of over 60 competitors. Football On Saturday, Brentwood faced Bede's School in a competitive set of fixtures. The First XI lost 2-0 to an in-form Bede's despite playing with great passion and certainly deserved a goal or two. The Second XI drew 3-3 in an end-to-end encounter with goals coming from Max Fewster (2) and Daniel Peakall. Another excellent team performance from the Second XI who are going from strength to strength. The Fourth XI again performed extremely well maintaining Mr Murphy's good start to the season. Jack Salter scored an excellent goal in a game the Fourth XI was unlucky not to win as it finished tied at 1-1. The Fifth XI lost 4-2 in another closely-contested game. The Under 15A team lost 2-0 in a game which the boys really should have won had they been able to convert their chances as they hit the woodwork three times and conceded two sloppy goals. The Under 15B continued its unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 win, as Ayo Jaiyesimi returned

from injury to score two. The Under 14A team also continued its winning start to the season with a 4-1 win with a number of excellent performances from the boys as they prepared for their ESFA First round cup game against John Warner on Thursday. The Under 14B team, also unbeaten thus far, continued its excellent season under Mr Davies with a 3-1 win - goals coming from James Abbott (2) and Emmanuel Olaniyan. On Monday the First XI faced Robert Clack in the first round of the Essex Cup and managed to triumph 2-0 with an excellent team performance. Charlie Bacon scored two excellent goals against a physical Robert Clack team to ensure safe passage into round two. On Wednesday, the Second XI played Brentwood County High in a well-contested fixture winning 3-1 with goals from Isaac Ng, Zavier Coyne and Zach Davidson. Jonny Mace impressed in central midfield with a disciplined display showing the quality he possesses. The Third, Fourth and Fifth XI faced Bancroft’s in the traditional fixture block. The Third XI lost but will feel disappointed not to have converted more of its chances in a very open game. The Fourth XI managed to win 1-0 with Edward Penney scoring the decider in another good performance. The Fifth XI drew 1-1 following another good performance which leaves the team that bit closer to tasting victory. Once again the Fifth XI will feel it could have quite rightly won but it wasn't to be its day as the spoils were shared. On Thursday, the First XI lost 5-2 in the first round of the ISFA to Harrow School, who on the day proved too physical and organised for Brentwood. Oliver Catterall put in another excellent performance at centre back to continue a great start to the season. The Under 14A team won in the first round of the ESFA 13-0 against John Warner School with goals coming from Freddie Topel (3), Theo Newton (2), Harrison Clayden (4), Joel Winter (3) and Ethan Norris. Also on Thursday, the Under 14B team defeated Chigwell’s A team 4-0 after an excellent display. James Dowsett, Emmanuel Olaniyan, Harry Carter and Elliot Gravett with the goals. In the C team fixture, Max Bee scored two to cap a fine Man of the Match performance with a Damilare Odelusi penalty securing a 3-2 win. Hockey The Under 12A team played its first fixture against Chigwell last weekend. Brentwood settled quickly into the game and was unlucky not to score in the first half. The girls battled hard but found themselves 1-0 down at half-time. Despite further chances, the girls were 3-0 down with 8 minutes to go. However, showing determination right until the end, the squad fought back with the game finishing 3-2. Izzy Sawyer and Emma Dowlen were the goalscorers with Araminta Smalley being awarded Player of the Match for a superb performance in defence. Saturday saw the Under 12B team travel away to Chigwell for its first competitive fixture of the season. Brentwood spent the majority of the first half finding its feet and settling into combinations, with the score 0-0 at the halfway point. However in the second half, the girls came out with confidence and some fantastic attacking play led to Grace Kingaby slotting away two goals. To secure the win, Captain Ellie Merritt put away a goal in the dying seconds of the game to complete a 3-0 victory. The Under 13A team played well against Chigwell. The girls made a strong start to the match and dominated possession and territory in the first half. The girls passed the ball well and were confident in their play. They scored two early goals and were comfortable at 2-0 at half-time. With a big squad of players there were regular rotations and the whole team worked well to adjust but they did not quite managed to turn their pressure into further goals. They fought well in the second half and the match was competitive to the end with the final result being a 3-1 victory. The goals were scored by Olivia Copeland, Sophie Philpot and Claudia Moore. Straight from the push back, the B team showed determination and grit combined with skill and accurate passing. Isabelle Toms captained and ruled the midfield with pace and force, allowing Sophia Stock to sweep the ball into the net for a first half hat-trick. Chigwell did have occasional bursts into Brentwood's half but Sabrina Lee and Isabel Graver's display of patience, resilience and timing, quickly crushed their hopes of attacking success. Special mention to Isobel Crichton, who was only required twice in the match; but she made two fantastic saves in a well-deserved 5-1 victory. The Under 14A team suffered defeat against an experienced Kent College side. Brentwood started the first half with high intensity but were slowly worn down by skilful opposition, conceding 6 goals in the first half. The girls put in an excellent second half performance, Ellie Marshall and Maddy Gale were outstanding in defence

and Freya Killilea and Renee Horwitz worked relentlessly in midfield. The final score was 9-1 with Freya scoring a well-deserved goal in the last few minutes of the game. The Under 15A played Kent College on Saturday and finished as 10-2 victors. Lucy Holloway scored 4 goals, with Orissa Uppal getting a hat-trick. Player of the Match was awarded to Emma Philpot who was dominant in midfield throughout. Karate Last weekend, Elle Passmore and James Henderson participated in the Southern England Karate Championships in Clacton. James fought well but narrowly missed semi-final qualification. Elle made great progress in the Team Kata to secure bronze before going a step further in the Individual Kata to win a fabulous silver medal. Netball It is fantastic to report, once again, that more Brentwood School pupils have been selected to represent the Hertfordshire Junior Maverick’s academy. Congratulations to Sadie Wood, Taaliyah Foster, Isabelle Toms, Sophia Stock and Francesca Stanford for all their hard work and commitment. The Under 13A netball team had a great start to the Independent National Schools’ Competition after a fantastic victory against St Edmunds, in the first round of the ISNC. The team took an early lead with Hannah Knightbridge, Captain, leading by example from the onset, encouraging the team to remain focused and to stay on task. Olivia Copeland and Isabelle Toms had a solid game in the shooting circle and were ably supported by the mid-court. Taaliyah Foster was, as ever, consistent in defence and gave a fine performance throughout. Player of the Match was awarded to Sadie Wood as she showed great versatility as GD and C and worked tirelessly throughout the game. The team voted Valencia Danby, a first year selected to play up, as Player of the Match. She showed great potential and her début performance was encouraging. A fine team performance lead them to a comfortable 35-10 victory. They look forward to the second round with great anticipation. In a very close match against Highlands, the Under 14 girls were often in the lead, but were unfortunate to lose 6-8. The team played excellently, with some standout performances from Freya Kilillea and Saachi Patel. Hannah Malyon-Davies was the Player’s Player for her relentless energy and skilful movement throughout the match. The Under 15B netball team had a brilliant match against Hylands, winning 21-1. Isabelle Blackwell played exceptionally well as WA throughout the game and Millie Chart showed tremendous talent as GS. Isabelle Blackwell was selected as Player’s Player and Millie Chart was chosen as Coach’s Player. The Under 16 netball team played extremely well against strong opposition, Brentwood Ursuline School. With a few Under 15 players playing up, Brentwood had fantastic depth in its squad in preparation for the upcoming first round of the National Schools’ competition. Unfortunately, the match was abandoned due to an unfortunate injury from Lauren Ager – we wish her a speedy recovery. This week, the First VII faced a very well-drilled and physical Surbiton High School in the first round of the Independent Schools’ National Cup. Brentwood had a strong and confident start, with the score remaining level for most of the first quarter. However mistakes began to creep in as the girls tired. With an end result of 26-53, the score line was certainly not reflective of many of the fantastic bursts of play seen both offensively and defensively from Brentwood. A particular stand out performance from substitute Faith Rufai, no doubt changed the game and as a result won her Player of the Match. The Second VII competed in the first round of the Independent National Schools’ Competition against Haileybury. All players worked extremely hard throughout the duration of the match, playing against players who compete and train for high level clubs. Brentwood was determined not to give up and continued playing with high levels of intensity and dedication. A particular mention to Zara Philips whose ruthlessness in the defending circle ensured she rightly won Player of the Match. The Under 13A netball team played a friendly fixture against Brentwood Ursuline, winning 22-1 with numerous positional changes. Player of the Match was awarded to Olivia Copeland who coped with a very

strong and physical goal defence. The Under 13B netball team enjoyed a convincing victory 19-2 against the same opposition. The girls played really well, steady game play and good use of channels. Insightful and accurate coaching comments were provided by the reserves at each quarter. Orienteering Emma Bowie-Britton last weekend returned from the UK Junior Inter Regional Championships as a member of the East Anglia Junior Orienteering Squad. The championship involves two days - the Saturday running an individual course (a technically challenging and hilly 5.4Km distance) and the Sunday running as part of a relay team. (similar difficulty to Saturday). After a challenging couple of days, the team finished in a respectable sixth position. Well done Emma. The School Team of twenty orienteers took part in the first event of the Schools’ League at Weald Country Park last Sunday. Many of the First Year pupils were taking part for the first time, and excelled themselves on the introductory 1.5 km White course, with nobody getting lost. First pair home were Jacob Leslie and Adnan Yaqub, with the others close behind. Additionally, the more experienced pupils gained excellent times, with Freya Killilea achieving First girl place on the 2.3km Yellow course, and Heather Trevelyan Third girl. On the 2.5km Orange course, Kate Bowie-Britton achieved First girl place, with Sarah Prior finishing third. The Team’s next outing will be to Birchanger Woods on the 15th October.

Rugby Last week, our rugby teams enjoyed excellent results against Colfe’s and Robert Clack, playing seventeen games - winning thirteen and losing four. It all started on Friday afternoon when 98 First Year boys played their first Senior School fixture against Colfe’s, followed by some very physical matches on Saturday against Robert Clack.

Our Under 12A’s have started impressively, with a convincing 25-0 win against Colfe’s and a hard-fought 20-15 win against a very physical Robert Clack side. Stand out performances came from captain William Howard, whose distribution from the base of the scrum was first class; the courageous tackling of Leo Troubridge that has thwarted dangerous opposition attacks, and the finishing of William Elliss, who has already scored four tries. Our Under 12B team had a great performance against Colfe’s on Friday beating them 25-5 and on Saturday, against an aggressive but inexperienced Robert Clack team they outclassed their opponents by 45-5. The squad held its shape and possession was excellent with good rucking and recycling of the ball. Two tries were scored by Tommy Idowu and Oscar Tweed, with Michael Olubodun-Niyi, Ore Fashesin-Souza, Jed Southgate and Zac Puchakayala scoring one apiece.

The Under 12C team also started off with an excellent win against Colfe’s School. The boys ran in 3 tries in the first 5 minutes and were always on top. The final score was 10 tries to nil with both Chris Thompson and Max Porteous scoring 3 tries each. On Saturday, they took a little time to get into their stride after a very timid start to the match. Alfie Bradbrook(2), Evan Akerman, Calum Donovan, Max Porteous, Owen Romhany, Chris Thompson and Jack Walker all scored in a convincing win. The Under 12D team was excited and fresh after its terrific win on Friday, and backed up another victory on Saturday morning against Robert Clack School at Dagenham RFC. Pierce Mosely and Luke Walsh each scored a hat-trick of tries. The Under 12E team was also too strong for Colfe’s and secured another excellent victory, winning 45-5. The Under 12F team squad also had a run out, and for boys that never played rugby before, surprised themselves with a fantastic 15-5 victory. On Saturday morning, our Under 13 teams played and put in some impressive performances against Robert Clack. The Under 13A team took an early lead with some fantastic running rugby and by half-time took the game away from Robert Clack leading 31-0. The second half saw a much more determined Robert Clack attack and Brentwood conceded three tries. Brentwood then played some fantastic attacking rugby stretching its lead to 49-19. James Webb-Wood and James Jupp were outstanding in attack while Peter Tyrer-Jolly was solid in defence and made the Robert Clack boys think twice when they ran in his direction. Our Under 13B

team followed its previous weekend performance securing yet another convincing victory and continuing its unbeaten start to the season with an outstanding 70-0 win against Robert Clack. The team, led by Captain Jack Ridgwell, showed tremendous physicality and grit, quickly scoring a succession of tries. The team put into practice its defensive work to ensure that it did not concede a try, while also showing great attacking intent. Particular mention should go to Jack Ridgwell for his four tries and the Man of the Match, Seun Fashesin-Souza for his brilliant running lines. The Under 14 and Under 15 boys found things more difficult. The Under 14B team started well with some good pressure in the opposition half. Yury Molostov broke the line in front of the posts to score an early try, deftly converted by Callum Ewens. Robert Clack came back strongly, winning several scrums against the head and looked very threatening. A couple of missed tackles and strong running resulted in concession of 4 tries in the remainder of the half, which finished 20-7. The game finished 27-7. Man of the Match goes to Christian Mootoo, for his excellent line breaks and defensive play. The Under 14A team struggled with the high intensity Robert Clack was playing with some key members of the squad missing and could not cope with Robert Clack’s incessant pressure. Rohan van der Merwe and Henry Deacon were outstanding in attack while Scott McKenzie impressed in defence. The Under 15A team succumbed to three times Essex Cup champions Robert Clack in a very physical encounter. Good performances from Ed Scott, Ethan Barton, Josh Ould, Thomas Howard and Michael Gurin could not thwart the Robert Clack attack. The Under 15B team worked hard for the whole game against a Clack team full of strong runners. Whilst Brentwood enjoyed plenty of possession, individual tackling and defensive organisation must improve. Strong running from Shiv Patel and Max Downey in particular did lead to a deserved try. Max Scourfield impressed for Brentwood in defence. The First XV displayed some great attacking rugby whilst securing its second victory of the season against Robert Clack on Saturday. Tries from Henry Batty, Olly Webb, and an outstanding individual try from George Davis provided the team with a solid lead at halftime. Robert Clack struck back after the half-time break, but a brace of tries from Teddy Mortlock ensured a well-deserved victory for the home side. Squash The Under 19 squash team began the National Schools’ competition with an impressive 4-1 victory over Hills Road College. There were victories for Harry Burr, Edward Brown and Hamza Shafique, whilst Charlie Bacon received a walkover in his match. On Thursday, the Juniors lost to Felsted 4-1 with James Sydenham securing the only victory. The team represented the School really well demonstrating excellent sportsmanship throughout.
