Headmaster’s Message

So much has taken place over the last seven days at school that I hardly know where to begin! The Summer Festival proved to be an excellent showcase for the arts, drama, music and public speaking at Sidcot, not to mention a fantastic community event in the form of the Garden Party, that this year took place in most areas other than the garden due to the louring weather. Many thanks to members of the SCPTA for all their hard work in making it such a great success despite the last minute changes to venue.

I was very moved by the Leavers’ Assembly last Sunday, which was an occasion to reflect on the time spent at Sidcot and recall experiences and friendships that will last long after the end of school. Although emotional in parts, it was also exciting and energising as our senior students look forward to new challenges at university and in the workplace. I wish them the very best as they make their way in the world and hope that they will remain in touch with us through the Sidctotian network.

Although we have said our farewells to those students who are leaving, term is still not over. In the final week we have camps and BBQs as well as getting ready for next term. As you will see we have a number of new staff coming in September and I wish those colleagues leaving for pastures new, good luck. They leave with our grateful thanks for all they have contributed in their time at Sidcot.

Sidcot Community Parent & Teacher Association News

Another school year is close to completion and somehow it’s been even busier than last year! It’s nearly a year since we welcomed our new Headmaster Iain Kilpatrick and his family to Sidcot and we hope that they have enjoyed being a part of the Sidcot Community.

I would like to thank everyone who helped and attended last weekend’s Summer Garden party; needless to say that without the help of the Senior & Junior School SCPTA helpers and the schools operations, housekeeping, maintenance, sports teams and students it wouldn’t have been possible - we hope you enjoyed it!

The SCPTA has continued to be supported by both parents and school staff who have assisted in running and attending numerous events throughout the year. We have this year looked to not only offer more ‘social’ events but to also develop the PTA to be more proactive - offering the opportunity for parents to be kept informed and discuss school projects and plans at the termly Head’s Forum.

Events this year included: Bonfire Night, regular Coffee Mornings, Skittles Night and a very successful May Ball. We have only missed out on one event due to bad weather: the Parents & Teachers Rounders & BBQ Night - we are now looking to hold this when we return in September and will keep you posted.

Thank you to all who have helped to make these events such fun! We really appreciate all the positive feedback from those who attended these and would welcome any suggestions for future events.

The SCPTA meet regularly, holding informal meetings that are advertised in the newsletter. Anyone is welcome to attend or if you would like to offer your assistance for forthcoming events please email Rachael in Admissions - [email protected]

We very much hope you all have a great summer break and look forward to seeing you in September.

Pete MercerSCPTA Chair

Lower Fourth Camp September 2013This year the annual Lower Fourth Camp is again to be based at the Cotswold Water Park. The camp is planned as part of our curriculum and is designed to encompass the outdoor and adventurous activities component of the National Curriculum. Apart from giving children the opportunity to experience new activities it also allows important social and personal skills to be developed within the peer group situation. For example: team building, relationships, self esteem, decision making, problem solving, trust and independence. We will be leaving school on Tuesday 17 September at 9.00am and will return on Friday 20 September by the end of the school day. The cost of the camp will be £160 and this will include all activities, specialist coaches, transport, camping, food and supervision. All Year 8 students have received a letter regarding the camp which includes permission and medical forms which need to be returned in an envelope to Julie Green, Head of Year 7, by Wednesday 3 July so that numbers can be confirmed. Boarders may need to return to school in September with equipment listed, so do please check what is required. In the unlikely event that your son or daughter is unable to furnish you with the letter a copy has also been sent by email. I certainly, am very much looking forward to the camp. Our current Year 7 have been a super year group and I am sure will be a pleasure and a delight to take out on Camp. Rosie BellingerHead of Year 8 & 9

Meeting with Old Friends!A few weeks ago I was privileged to meet one of our oldest Old Scholars. Nancy Woodhead is now over 100 years old and living just five minutes away from Sidcot, at Sewell House. Her memories, not just of her time at the school, but also of a century of living through some incredible changes in the world, were absolutely incredible. I also met Rosalind Cashmore, whose husband Tony used to teach at the school as the Head of Modern Languages. Tony loved poetry and the Cashmore Recitation prize was established in honour of his service to the school. Dick and Joyce Hinton taught at Sidcot for nearly 30 years. Geoffrey Pearce who is President of Sidcot’s Old Scholars works at Sewell House and had many tales of schoolboy mischief to tell!

The links between the school and Sewell House, together with the shared history and relationship with the Quaker community, which of course founded both organisations, are incredible and I am looking forward to sharing more of their stories with you in due course.

If you have any memories of Sidcot and its place in the community please do get in touch and email me [email protected]

Getting Social!Calling all Tweeps and Facebookers - be the first to hear the latest news, information and, dare we say it, school gossip, by following us on Facebook and Twitter. There are different accounts including Sports, Sidcotians, Art Centre and School so you can access the topics that most appeal to you.

Search for ‘Sidcotians’ on Facebook to join the online group and check out @SidcotSchool, @Sidcotians, @SidcotSports, @SidcotArts and @byHurlyBurly on Twitter.

STOP PRESS!Exciting news – Sidcotian Tim Bevan, who founded Working Title Films and is responsible for producing Les Mis, Hot Fuzz, Atonement, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bridget Jones’ Diary, has agreed to share the secrets of his success with Sidcot students. To reach the largest number of students, this will probably take the form of a filmed interview but we will keep you posted!

Summer Festival: Textiles

Fashion ShowIt was with much trepidation that students volunteered to model in the Fashion Show. However, when they saw the amazing outfits there was no stopping them in choosing more than one outfit to model. Models and outfits were matched up and a brief rehearsal scheduled. Music was provided by Bert Walliss and lighting by Andy Darvill and Niel Doig.

Pupils from Year 7 modelled hats made in class and pyjama bottoms made in Stitch Club. Other students modelled either their own creations or modelled other students’ work. They performed spectacularly and all enjoyed the experience in the end! The Fashion Show provides a great showcase for the excellent work that is produced in Textiles, leading to students going on to several London universities and elsewhere to study fashion and textiles.

My thanks also go to Nicky Corbett, Textiles and Food Technician, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a successful event. Well done to all who modelled and most of all to those students whose work was featured. Well done!

The exhibition of work continues until Tuesday at 4.00pm, so if you have not yet visited, do go along and take a look.

models by Jessica Starkey, who started her address to us by holding up a child’s doll and a Barbie for comparison. Nathan Wang’s talk on ‘Greed’ began with the dramatic assertion that “Greed is good!” He then discussed how modern Chinese culture was becoming as corrupt as ours, and suggested that we might all meet each other in the Fourth Circle of Hell, which is especially reserved for greedy people!

This year’s winner, Nicolas Gampierakis, gave a remarkably polished and engaging talk entitled ‘Harry Potter and I’ which turned out to be about the one, solid connection between Nic and Harry which was the fact that they both were boarders at Sidcot and Hogwart’s respectively. This lively and entertaining symposium was extremely well-received and it was evident that Nic held the audience spell-bound, so that as it turned out there was evidently more than one connection between him and Harry after all.

What an ordeal it must be!However well prepared the speaker, it takes some nerve to stand up in front of a considerable audience, usually for the first time, and speak for ten minutes on a subject of your choice. Of course, you do have some help, you do have rehearsals; but it is still an achievement to speak directly, with humour, clarity and with strong contact to the audience, so that each member of it can follow closely quite complex arguments. All of the speakers this year did all that with masterly skill, as if they were perfectly used to it!

The talks were of considerable variety: Youren Yu gave a very poetic speech on the subject of ‘Hope’, including many references to ancient Chinese culture and daringly finishing with a reading in Mandarin and English of a poem by Wu Fu from the 14th Century. We were also urged, gently and persuasively, to pick good role

It is always good if the judges spend a long time contemplating the speeches; it means they are having a hard time deciding the winner! Mary Medlicott, the author and story teller, was Chairperson and she spoke eloquently and generously about the speakers. She and Tessa Munt, the MP for Wells, and Mark Hartley, Headmaster at Forres Sandle Manor School in Hampshire, were the best judges we have had for a long time. This was because they spoke well to the audience and gave careful and sensitive analyses of the speeches, but also because they had extremely good personal contact with the speakers, who evidently learned a good deal from what they said and were clearly impressed with their knowledge and experience.

Ordeal or not for the speakers, for us in the audience it was a pleasure to listen to such talented youngsters who were so impressive, helping to make the occasion the climax of the school year.

Fund raising for TanzaniaThe Tanzania fund raising stall at the ‘Garden Party’ raised £364.81 from the sale of a variety of bags, jewellery rolls, bracelets, brooches and sweets. We are very grateful for all of the work undertaken to make this so successful and the funds will be used to help the Upendo Orphanage. A Swahili speaker has corrected me and ‘Upendo’ actually means ‘love’ not ‘hope’, as I had previously been informed, and I think this is even more meaningful for the name of an orphanage.

This term we have raised almost £1,000 for the orphanage through the Garden Party and Tanzania day. Thank you once again to all of you for your support. We have also received generous donations of soft toys and clothing, which we will also be taking with us.

Summer Festival: Drama - ‘One Too Many’ play

Last week a cast of over 40 students expertly directed by Chris Bateman, performed a hard-hitting but nevertheless, humorous and poignant play about the dangers of alcohol. It was fantastic to see such a large cast of our talented Sidcot students, especially when many of the cast were new or less experienced faces, whose confidence and ability really shone through.

Backstage we also showed off the talents of our technical crew; all lighting, sound and projection had been programmed and operated by our self-sufficient, calm students, who also did a fabulous job during the performances.

There were many memorable performances and several cameo roles (Darth Vader and the ‘morph’ characters attracting the most intrigue!) who kept us spellbound and extremely emotionally engaged throughout.

Mr Bateman and his amazing cast did a splendid job – well done and a huge congratulations to all involved! Proceeds from the performance are to be split between the Edinburgh Festival Fringe performance fund and our Tanzania trip fund.

Summer Festival: Students’ Art Exhibition

The end of year student exhibition was very well attended over the course of the festival weekend, with lots of great feedback from visitors. If you have not yet seen the work, the exhibition will be up until Wednesday 3 July and is well worth a visit.

On Wednesday we shall be taking the work down, photographing it, and storing it for the summer. An online gallery will be made from the photographs, which will be accessible from the art department website by the end of the term. For now you can enjoy the photos here, taken on the opening night of the exhibiton.

Group 4 ProjectThe Group 4 Project is part of the International Baccalaureate programme and involves students working in small teams to carry out a two-day scientific project, which they have planned themselves. At Sidcot we take advantage of the varied countryside close to the school to carry out projects involving fieldwork followed by laboratory experiments concluding with a presentation to year 10 pupils. In the last five years we have studied the local coastline, the high moorland of the Mendips, Cheddar Gorge and the Coombe.

This year the project was based in a small piece of woodland. The students investigated the soil acidity and its affect on plant life, the rocks, the wavelength of light transmitted by leaves, tree height related to trunk diameter, light levels and the way in which noise from the nearby motorway varied. Having spent the morning gathering data the students enjoyed lunch around a campfire with marshmallows. We then returned to school to carry out experiments in the laboratories. The second day was spent on further experiments and preparation of the final presentation. Graphs and tables of data were accompanied by lively films, which showed the students enjoying themselves and hopefully will have encouraged the Year 10 pupils to choose the IB! The students should be congratulated on their energy, enthusiasm and initiative. Jim ScottHead of Science Faculty

Lunchtime Concert Series: performance by Weston College students - Wednesday 26 JuneWhy listen to Radio 1’s Live Lounge when you could come to a lunchtime gig in the concert hall? Sidcot were delighted to welcome Lauren-Jaye Cahill and Lauren Corcoran - a pair of young hopefuls from Weston College on Wednesday lunchtime. The two Laurens were an impressive duo - the lead singer was accompanied by her singing partner who was fantastic on the acoustic guitar and also had a beautiful voice. Their set included a wide range of genres that were well suited to their voices. They sang ‘Shine bright like a diamond’ better than Rhianna - a song greatly improved by the accompaniment of an acoustic guitar. Lauren went on to sing an original song, ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ that she informed the audience she’d written last week curled up under her duvet in front of the Disney Channel! It was an inspiration to see such talent and we hope to enjoy further visits from other budding musicians from our local area.

Summer Festival: Senior School Sports Day

Our Sports Day proved one of super sportsmanship, friendly competitive rivalry and sound athletic endeavour. The weather, after the previous day’s postponement, was very kind and helped to ensure that it was a day that will be remembered.

It was certainly a bumper day in terms of records broken - six fell. In the Senior Boys hurdles, Edmund Yue made an extremely technical event look very easy and comfortably knocked a second off a record that had stood since 1994. Andrew Wheller launched a javelin that flew further than anyone else has made one fly on Sports day since 1984 and Alex Crofts broke two records, the Junior Boys 100m and the high jump - brilliant! Another double record breaker was Imogen Moroney who beat her sister Jasmine’s record that had been set the previous year in the 1500m and also the 800m record that had stood since 1976. Superb.

Also important to note is that an enormous number of students achieved their personal best of the season in terms of time or distance accomplished. Our term result sheets will be updated and these successes will count towards athletic certificates at the end of term Sports Assembly. Very well done to everyone who excelled themselves.

Year 9 Rounders Tournament, Wednesday 19 June - Clevedon SchoolThe Year 9s had a fantastically successful afternoon at the North Somerset Rounders tournament. They played a series of group matches against some strong opposition and rarely have I seen such a consistently high standard from one of our teams. Batting in all games was of the highest order and scoring opportunities were taken keenly. Fielding was tight and assured and opposition found themselves under immense pressure to get from post to post.

All of the group games were won – some very convincingly and Sidcot proved the only team to emerge from the groups without a defeat. This put them, deservedly, straight through to the final to play Priory, always formidable opposition.

Priory were put into bat first. Sidcot fielded superbly, constantly preventing Priory from making scores and in a number of cases stumping and catching players out. With focus and quality fielding the Priory score was held to 6.

Sidcot then came in to bat and played very competitively, striving to score at even the smallest opportunity. Down to last batter, Emmy Goddard-Watts was required to score and with fabulous hit beyond second post took the game to 6 - 6.

It required a count back of batsmen out to establish a winning side and in a nail biting moment Sidcot found themselves runners up due to having had one more batsman out. Priory took it by the closest of margins.

The girls should certainly not be disappointed. This was a stunning display of how rounders should be played. They should be proud of their achievement in reaching and playing so well in the final.

Group results:

v Churchill - won 12 – 3v Clevedon - won 7 – 4½ v Priory (gp) - won 7 – 5v Nailsea - won 6 – 2½ v Backwell - won 5 – 3½

Final score: Sidcot 6 - Priory 6 (Priory win by getting 1 more batsman out)

Sidcot Golf ClubOn 17 May Sidcot School formed a partnership with Burnham and Berrow Golf Club. Every Friday a minibus takes Year 8 and Year 9 pupils to the golf club to receive expert coaching from PGA Pro Shane Kaye and to play a 9-hole course. The boys were taught all aspects of the game; driving, chipping and putting. Shane was impressed by the progress of the boys – all of whom were complete novices when they started but now enjoy a 28 handicap. The opportunity to play golf has been well received by the children - they’ve enjoyed having their wit and skills tested by Shane and the tricky 9-hole golf course. Anyone interested in attending the golf coaching, please see Mr Cattermole or Mr Smith. Due to our link with the golf club, BBGC are offering free membership to all U18s over the summer holidays. For more information please contact Shane Kaye on 01278 785760 ext. 3 or visit www.burnhamandberrowgolfclub.co.uk Sidcot v QEH Tuesday 25 JuneSidcot’s first ever golf match was held at Long Ashton golf club. Sidcot narrowly lost 3 matches to 2 with a noticeable performance from Alex Kew (Year7) beating a Sixth Former 3 and 2. The team included Scott Havercroft, Bill Marshfield and Dan Witherall. All the boys enjoyed the match so much that a rematch has been scheduled for September.

North Somerset Athletics Championships, Tuesday 25 June - Broadoak SchoolBoys and girls from Year 7 competed in the NSA Championships this week in glorious conditions at Broadoak against ten other schools in the district. The boys took part in their field events first whilst the girls were on the track. The Sidcot boys suffered somewhat by comparison to boys from other schools who were simply enormous and as a consequence distances thrown and jumped were some way beyond our compass. This is not to say that we did not compete well because we did and personal bests were equalled or bettered in many events. Particularly impressive, however, were Jacob McGurl who came a creditable 6th in the shot putt and Oscar Browne who came a splendid second in the high jump. The girls found going tough on the track also against some very athletic opponents but acquitted themselves well - particularly Imogen Moroney who came second in the 1500m and the relay team who came 3rd. The boys then took to the track and found life similarly difficult whilst the girls did extremely well in their field events - especially Lizzy Dolley who came 3rd in the shot putt and Jade Ball who came 3rd in the high jump. Overall the results found the boys towards the bottom of the group whilst the girls finished a very creditable 7th. It was a good effort from all concerned, especially considering that we have some thirty students all told in Year 7, whilst our local rivals not uncommonly have over two hundred. Well done to all those who took part.
