Dear Parent,

Seven weeks was a very long half term and I believe that both pupils and staff were in need of a rest. We ended on a very positive note, though, with an absolutely fantastic Sports Day organised by Mr Brownbill and his team. I thought it was a really wonderful event, encompassing so much of what I enjoy about our school; from the good sportsmanship, to the sense of community and House pride, it was a really successful day and my thanks go out to the parents who provided so much support, the Claremont staff, and FOCS who kept us going with cake and ice lollies throughout.

We were very pleased to support Disability International at Sports Day this year and thank you to all who donated. I have been struck by just how altruistic and caring the Claremont community can be and we have raised some fantastic sums this year including £1,295 during Fundraising week alone. I have been asked to clarify how a pupil (or parent) might go about running a charitable event. As always, it is best to come and see me with a plan which involves raising awareness about the charity, as well as raising money - the educational aspect is very important to us as a school. We are not able to run every event that is proposed, and will generally try to give preference to those charities with which the school has had a long-standing relationship. However, the most important piece of advice is to get the request in as early as possible so that we can fit it in the calendar.

Looking ahead to the next few weeks, we have the hurdle of internal examinations to overcome before Speech Day, trips to Camber Sands and France, and then the end of the academic year is upon us. I am impatient to experience all that the next few weeks hold, including the performances of one of my favourite musicals, Les Misérables, before we break for the summer holidays.

on the campfire to toast a job well done.

Here are some Year 4 pupils

working very well in pairs doing a survey about their favourite means of transport in French. Perfect after their trip to Saint Omer!

Thank you to Diya who brought in a fantastic atlas which she can use for revision in Geography. Mrs Francis was so impressed she’s trying to source her own copy.

Thank you to the Bridger family who brought some of their tadpoles for the Year 5 students to look at. Year 5 have been studying the life cycle of a frog so it has been fascinating for the students to watch the tadpoles slowly turn into froglets.

Zoology club members have helped move Cornflake the cornsnake into her new terrarium. She is taking advantage of her new home and is very active.

We enjoy eating together in the evenings. Meal Times at the Boarding House

All of the food in the boarding house is cooked fresh every day; it is just like being at home! We wake up to the smell of fresh croissants and a full English breakfast each morning…

There is always fresh fruit available and sometimes there is cake when we arrive back from school. Charlotte serves soup with our meal each evening.

1st XI

A competitive game started with Claremont taking some early and notable wickets courtesy of Sam C and Ollie C. Vinehall hit out in the middle of the innings when our bowling got too short, but two sharp run outs by Oscar M pegged them back a bit. Two more wickets for Tom S saw Vinehall restricted to 123 - 7 from 24 overs.

It was a difficult start to the Claremont innings as we lost 3 of our main batsmen cheaply, but a good partnership between Jack S (37) and Tom S (11) saw our run rate pick up and start to threaten the total. The loss of these batsmen and Sam S (10) saw our scoring grind to a halt and Claremont ended up 15 runs short. Man of the match Jack S. 2nd XI Claremont won the toss and elected to bowl. Although many runs were given away due to wide and no balls, Sam Webster kept wicket well, assisting several run outs and taking a catch. Wickets were shared evenly between the bowlers.

With plenty of time to score the runs, the opening batters began sensibly. Claremont then lost several wickets in quick succession and getting to the target began to look in doubt. Dan Morris stayed at the crease, as others fell around him, ending on 15*. Tom L scored runs quickly and hit Claremont's only 6 of the game to clinch the win. U8/9 Kwik Cricket v Bede’s: The U8/9's played a great game of cricket away at Bede’s. Claremont batted first, striking the ball well and showing good decision-making. Lizzie S and Darci B ( 16 ) were top scorers, closely followed by Galina B and Abesa

S ( 13 ). We also bowled well, showing good length and greater consistency. Liberty BM and Emma P were top with a total of 7 wickets in 2 overs!

Claremont were worthy winners with a final score of 235 to 188. Player of the match was Lizzie S U11 Cricket vs. Vinehall Claremont 211 – 213 Vinehall POM Vinehall vote: Jessica C POM Miss Compton vote: Tilly L The U11 Cricket match was a very close game throughout. Gen and Emilia were our highest scoring pair, scoring nine runs. When fielding we got four wickets which was great. Tilly made some fantastic catches. In the end, Vinehall were lucky. They hit the last ball just past Emilia in the field and unfortunately it crossed the boundary to score the winning runs. Miss Compton.

U13 v Vinehall: It was a modified team that took on a strong Vinehall at rounders this week due to a number of 'regular' players competing in a re-arranged league cricket match. It was a comfortable win for Vinehall. They proved to be a very slick unit, batting with power and fielding with confidence and decisiveness. Claremont's 'players of the match' were Grace deW ( batting ) and Millie

W ( fielding ).

U11 v Vinehall

Claremont hosted two U11 Rounders matches. Both of the Claremont teams were mixed ability . . . . Claremont U11 'Red' and Claremont U11 'Blue'. Vinehall batted first, and had some big hitters in this team! Despite some good fielding from the Claremont 'Red' team, we fell short with the bat ourselves, and were unable to match Vinehall on this occasion. Final score = Claremont 'Red' – 4 Vinehall - 8 Girl of the Game (voted by Vinehall) = Lyra C Batter of the Match =. Chantalle W (1.5)

This week, we have looked at similarities and differences between each other. So, to start the week, I asked the children to paint themselves

using the correct colours; they completed some fantastic representations of themselves. At circle time, during the afternoon, we spoke about features that were the same and things that were different. From hair colour to eye colour and being a boy to a girl. We have also joined forces with the Year 2s again, this time creating some sugar topped apples! Again, they had to work together with their Year 2 partner to find sticks suitable for the campfire. We have also been preparing for Sports Day, which is fast approaching us (17th June) We have been practising for a range of fantastic events that we will be competing in. The excitement is passing through the Badgers after each practise. Lastly, we have visited the Adventure Playground, where we created lots of role play games using the apparatus, and we had stories about horse races, monster machines and also aeroplane rides to Spain!

At the end of last week the Badgers and Foxes celebrated Pizza Party Day (US) by making scone base cheese and tomato pizzas in their own rooms and then eating them in the woods for snack time. After this we lit a campfire and had a singsong around it-apologies for introducing them to “The meatball song”!

Next, we carried out a fire damping ceremony and then played Forest School games including “Sly Fox”.

We have been working on ordering things this week -in the mathematical sense. We started by ordering the ribbons in Mrs Exley’s ribbon bag from shortest to longest. Elsie found a really long ribbon and Edward the shortest. Working as a group we agreed where each should go in relation to the others. We followed this activity by ordering a variety of items for size, creating ranges from smallest to largest.

We have begun to practise for Sports Day. Mrs Exley has been so impressed with the good natured and sportsmen like behaviour of all children. This bodes well for a really special event on the 17th June to which you are all warmly invited.

We have visited Pre prep again as part of our rolling transition programme, this time listening to stories read by the Pre prep teachers without the support of the nursery staff-how grown up is that?

The Hedgehogs have had another busy week. We went for a walk into the woods and collected up lots of sticks, which the following day we had the Hedgehogs paint; we got very messy and used lots of glitter! We have also focused on our numbers this week by singing number games with our singing props and playing with our jelly numbers to help us with our recognition.

This week the Squirrels have been recognising basic shapes by using different shaped objects to print into playdough. They also used the interactive whiteboard to play the shape game. The Squirrels also had lots of fun doing their first practice for sports day.

The Robins have been having a magical week .... we have been for a walk in the woods to collect some sticks to create our magic wands, painting them with colours and glitter and flowing tassels ... Abracadabra!

This week the Kingfishers have been talking about what we like about ourselves, and how we make other people happy. Arya said she plays nicely with her sister. And Noemi said she plays carefully near the stinging nettles!

Polite Notice: If your baby/child is poorly could you please keep them at home until they have fully recovered. Thank you.

This week, the Ducklings and Butterflies have enjoyed having a creative week; they all enjoyed printing using lots of lovely thick paint and using their fingers to make patterns. They have also been busy using their favourite crayons to create beautiful pictures and bubble play with our friends in Robins. We would like to say a big welcome to Edie who has started in Ducklings this week.
