    Principal Notes

As we start the month of November, we are

changing seasons. Students are starting to

bring hats and gloves for those cold

mornings. I see students with jackets, which

are needed at the recess times. It is also a

change in our sports. As we end our fall

sports, congratulations to all our volleyball

and soccer teams for a great season. I know

the students played hard and enjoyed their

time on the field and court.

A very special congratulations to our 8th

grade volleyball teams who participated in

the Seton tournament. It is such a privilege

to be invited to the Seton! Your invitation

shows the hard work and dedication you

    showed this year!

Conferences for first quarter are scheduled

next week: Wednesday, Nov. 12 and

Thursday, Nov. 13. Please sign up online

for conferences if you have not already.

    Lunch Program Survey

As you saw in the school mailer on

Thursday, we are evaluating our hot lunch

program. We are struggling because we do

not have enough students taking hot lunch to

make it financially viable here at St.

Matthias. We are looking at various ways

we can keep the program, and we would like

    input from you.

Informally, we have polled the students as to

what they think of the hot lunch. What I

hear from a lot of the students is that it is not

enough food. With changes to the

regulations in the Federal School Lunch

Program this year, serving sizes are smaller.

This is a complaint I hear from many

schools and districts. In fact, in talking with

the Department of Public Instruction, there

have been 8 districts in the state who have

withdrawn from the program because the

    increased regulations and students,

particularly older students, do not feel they

    are getting enough food.

As we review the hot lunch program, we

have a few options to consider:

Keeping the program as it stands but

    providing a volunteer server which

    would reduce costs.

We will consider the option of

    withdrawing from the Federal School

    Lunch Program and providing a

program that does not need to follow

    the new regulations.

Cutting the lunch program to just a

    couple times a month.

We have created a couple surveys because it

is important we have feedback from the

students as well as the parents. The students

are taking their surveys here at school.

There is a link below for the parent survey.

It is important to have feedback from all our

families. Please take a moment to complete

this short survey by Friday, Nov. 7th

    .

If you have any questions, please contact

    Mrs. Booth or Mr. Richter.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this

    matter.

    2015-2016 Parental Choice Programs

We are in the process of determining the

number of choice seats we will be making

available and we need your assistance in this

area. If we don’t receive feedback from the

parents we might not have enough seats

    available for those you qualify.

Please remember that if you qualify for the

Choice program, 100% of the tuition cost for

each child is paid by the Milwaukee Parental

    Choice Program (MPCP).

Participants for the MPCP program must

reside in the City of Milwaukee and fall

under the income levels noted below:

Family Size = 1, Adjusted yearly income at

    or below $34,953

Family Size = 2, Adjusted yearly income at

    or below $47,181

Family Size = 3, Adjusted yearly income at

    or below $59,409

Family Size = 4, Adjusted yearly income at

    or below $71,637

Family Size = 5, Adjusted yearly income at

    or below $83,865

Family Size = 6, Adjusted yearly income at

    or below $96,093

If your family size is greater than 6, the add

$12,228 for each additional family member

    to $96,093.

    * Married couples residing in the same

household receive a $7,000 credit when

looking at the family income limits.

Example: If you are a married couple with

two children (family size of 4) and your

adjusted gross income from line 37 of your

Federal tax return (Form 1040) is less than

$78,600, your family would meet the MPCP

income requirement of $71,637 after the

    $7,000 credit is applied.

** Please note that these income figures are

for the 2014-2015 school years and looking

at your income from 2013. These income

ranges will be changing for the 2015-2016

year and will be based on your income from

    2014.

We want to be sure we open enough seats

for families in St. Matthias Parish, School

and Christian Formation. We are asking all

families who reside in the City of

Milwaukee to take this short survey. This

survey is a little different than the previous

one. We had problems with some of the

data so we are asking you to complete it

again to be sure we have accurate numbers

in planning for the number of choice seats

we open. Please take a moment to complete

this short survey by Friday, Nov. 7th

    .

    http://www.quia.com/sv/684447.html

Thank you in advance for your attention to this

survey. We know the MPCP will help current

families. This program will help us reach out to

St. Matthias Parishioners who put Catholic

    Education as a priority.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs.

    Booth or Mr. Richter.

Thank you to everyone for participating in

the Pennies 4 Patients campaign last week in

support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma

Society of WI. The students and families of

St. Matthias were very generous. We had 5

    grade classroom

donating $228.27 to win the Olive Garden

Pasta Lunch! Together St. Matthias raised

$1,227.65 to fight blood cancers and help

find a cure. Thank you St. Matthias!!!

    H & S Hot Ham/Bake Sale Update

Thank you to the parish and school families

for participating in the sale! It was brought

to our attention that the vendor mis-

packaged the ham and we unintentionally

shorted our patrons. National Bakery has

apologized for the error and has reimbursed

the home and school. We are passing this

on to you and will be selling ham at a

discounted rate in February. Thank you for

    your understanding.

    Parking Lot Reminders

We want our children safe, and a parking lot

can be a dangerous place if people are not

    aware of the correct paths.

Always park so you can pull forward to leave - never back up your vehicle

    in the parking lot

Walk within the white pathway in the middle of the lot – never drive

through the middle of the lot

If you enter via Oklahoma Avenue – you should exit via Oklahoma

    Avenue

If you enter via Euclid – you should exit via Beloit Road

It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure our

    parking lot is safe.

We don’t want to assume that everyone

knows that one of our 3rd grade families at

St. Matthias, the Blaszak’s (Chanse who is in

Ms. Roth’s Class) are fighting a health

    battle.

“What 43 year old Chris Blaszak thought

was an infected wisdom tooth turned out to

be stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma of the

mandible, a life threating form of cancer.

After four surgeries totaling 40 hours, the

transplant didn't take. Life from that point

on was forever changed. Loving family and

friends are now rallying around Chris and

his family to provide support in his long

journey ahead and fight against this

cancer. A loving father and husband, 20

years dedicated service to the US Air Force

440th unit military police, retired Desert

Storm and Enduring Freedom military hero,

    homicide detective and lieutenant of

Milwaukee Police Department of 22 years,

Chris Blaszak has been committed to the

safety of our hometown community and its

people. His exhausting efforts to keep our

    communities safe have allowed our

children, mothers and fathers, brothers and

sisters to feel more secure knowing that

people like Chris fight and win the battle for

    us every day.”

Second, their neighbor is coordinating some

food drops for the family throughout the

month of December. If anyone is interested

in participating, here is the link to do so:

    http://www.takethemameal.com/meals.php?t=LCSV50

    86&v=567b30f9a9&other_schedules=1

And, they are also looking for breakfast

items, snack type foods (potentially for

lunches or grab and go) and/or sandwich

fixings for the kids (15, 8 and 3). As far as I

know there are not any dietary restrictions.

If you would be willing to provide some,

please send it along with Jenna Kasal (Mrs.

Mlagan’s room) and I will get it to their food

    coordinator.

And, finally, Bunny asked if we could all put

Chris and their family on a prayer chain

and/or offer up individual prayers, they

would really appreciate it. They believe in

the power of prayer and in miracles. In the

message I received Bunny she states: “It’s

been difficult but YES I do BELIEVE in

miracles I’m waiting for Christopher’s to

unfold in Jesus’s name!” Chris is currently

in the hospital fighting an infection so

please keep them in your thoughts. Thanks

everyone! If you have any questions or

need further information, please let me

    know. Angie Kasal [email protected]
