I tried to get his name and address so I could repay him, but he refused by simply saying, “If you see anybody else short, do the same thing for them.” This was several years ago and so far I have helped pay for a few lunches, a tank of gas, other various times when people were short. Let’s start this week off with a “pay it forward” piece sent in by Adam Taylor.

One Saturday morning, I stopped at a drive-through bank machine to check my balance before stopping at a gas station to fill up my tank and get some coffee. After filling up my tank, when I went to the cashier to pay for it, I then realized that I had left my ATM card in the bank machine. I have no idea how many people I’ve helped, but that man will never be forgotten. Anyways, I was reading your article on random acts of kindness and thought I should share my story. Thanks for reading.

Let them at all times concern

themselves with doing a kindly thing for one

of their fellows, offering to

someone love, consideration,

and the fella at the other end of the phone told me to give him the approximate location of the car, and that he would try to get to it as soon as possible. He asked me for my phone number, and said he would call me the next day. I was staying at a friend’s overnight, and gave the number of where I was at. I told the fella that I could get a ride with my friend and meet him there the next day.It was late in the afternoon of the next day when I received a phone call. But the call didn’t come from the tow truck company, it came from the RCMP. I was told that I had to get my car off of the highway. I immediately called the tow truck company, but the line was busy. After several attempts, I assumed that they were overwhelmed with calls. I asked my friend to drive me back to my car. The plan was to pull the wheel off, drive into town, have it repaired and then drive back out to put it back on the car. The whole drive to my car, I’m mumbling under my breath, “Stupid tow truck driver.” I was determined that the tow truck company was going to get a piece of my mind when this was all over. But my internal ranting was interrupted when my friend asked me, “How did they know where to call you?” I said, “I gave him your phone number yesterday.” My friend corrected me, “You gave the phone number to the tow truck driver…. how did the RCMP know where to reach you?” “I don’t know…. probably ran my license plate,” I guessed. “Al…. you weren’t home. You were at my place. How did the RCMP know to call you at my place?” For the rest of the ride to my car, I’m no longer mad at the tow truck driver. I’m now confused and going over the previous day’s events in my mind. As my friend pulls up behind my car, I’m shocked by what I see. My car no longer has a flat tire. I step out of my friend’s car and begin walking around mine. That’s when I see it. There’s a note stuck under the windshield. It reads, “ You dialed a wrong number, but I knew you were having a bad day and didn’t have the heart to tell you. I’m not a tow truck driver and you don’t owe any money for the flat repair. Drive safe. P.S. I took the liberty of calling the RCMP so that they didn’t tow your car to impound. I gave them your contact info. Hope that was ok.”The note was unsigned. He never did call me. I was never able to actually thank him. Keep sending us your random acts of kindness and pay it forward stories, folks. I know there must be some great ones out there.

The Reverend’s Sermon

The reverend’s sermon focused on how God knows which of us grows best in the sunlight and which of us needs shade. “For example,” he said, “roses must be planted in the sun, but fuchsias thrive in the shade.”After the service, a woman, her face beaming, approached him. “Your sermon did me so much good,” she said. Before he had time to gloat too much, she added, “I always wondered what was wrong with my fuchsias.”

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate expensive car parts not far from the object we are trying to hit.MECHANIC’S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard car-tons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on boxes containing convert-ible tops or tonneau covers.

Shopping vs Sailing

Last summer, my wife and I met a couple at a restaurant. After lunch, the women decided to go shopping, and I invited the man to go sailing.

While we were out on the water, a storm blew in. The tide had gone out, and we were down-wind trying to work our way back through a narrow channel. At one point the boat grounded and we had to climb overboard and shove with all our might to get it back in deeper water.

As my new friend stood there, ankle deep in muck, the wind blowing his hair wildly, rain streaming down his face, he grinned at me, and with unmistakable sincerity said, “Sure beats shopping.”

Construction Noise

During a beautiful spring afternoon, I was attending a music festival. Just as I stopped to listen to a folk singer, a group of exhibitors, dragging out tools and sawhorses, began setting up their display booth nearby. All their shouting and hammering made it difficult to enjoy the music. The noise they made got louder and even more obnoxious and intrusive as time went on.

Finally, to everyone’s relief, they completed the construction. As a finishing touch, they hung a sign on their booth. It read “Silent Auction.”
